Don Edwards NWR features over 30,000 acres and is a critical component of protected habitats in the Pacific Flyway. Fifteen habitat types, more than 340 plant species and 280 bird species call the refuge home. Millions of shorebirds and waterfowl utilize the area during peak migrations. The refuge provides overwintering habitat for some of the largest concentrations of diving ducks in the Pacific Flyway. The lands operated and maintained by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in the bay area hold more wintering Canvasback than the rest of the state combined.
Yesterday at Edwards Gardens.
With the weather forecast very un-spring-like for the coming week, it was a cheering sight.
This Edwards' Hairstreak, Satyrium edwardsii, was one of six I found along a high ridge near several open areas with scrub oak and blooming common milkweed. They are rare in the central Shenandoah Valley.
It occurs in the eastern United States and southern Canada. The species is considered vulnerable.

Thanks to a childhood friend who was working for NASA as the time I was able to experience the historical event.

An abandoned house in Edwards (Ottawa), Ontario, Canada.
Looks like it is on the verge of collapsing onto itself!
That being said, it has not degraded that much since I photographed it five years ago on April 9, 2015.

This pretty little scene along the South Fork of the Yuba River is a mere 7 miles from our house. The Edwards Crossing Bridge, spanning the South Yuba River was built in 1904. This single lane bridge sports a steel truss arch with a timber deck supported on concrete piers. And yes, I have driven my car across it.
