On Saturday 7 October 2017, UCL Urban Laboratory and Folkestone Triennial 2017 held the second event in the EDGE symposium series, exploring the concept of situated practice in contemporary art, architecture and urbanism. The events bring together practitioners and thinkers at three ‘edge’ locations connected by the High Speed 1 railway, which acts a geographical link and embodies ideas associated with community, connectivity and escapism.

In framing these events, we have considered 'edge' as: 'Where an area that is known or privileged meets another that is unknown or ignored; a point of balance between contrary or diverse phenomena; a place of connectivity and interaction.'

'Periphery' was a day of enquiry to consider the environs of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Investment for the 2012 Games brought rapid development to the previously neglected Stratford area. Here East, within the former press and broadcasting centre of the Games, is envisaged as a cluster of innovators and digital makers, whilst the Stratford Waterside development will bring new institutions including the V&A, Sadler's Wells, London College of Fashion, and UCL.

Keynote: Jill Magid and Do Ho Suh

Speakers: Amica Dall (Assemble), Anna Harding (SPACE), Jane Rendell, Kreider + O’Leary, Liza Fior (MUF), Oreet Ashery and Mi Park, Torange Khonsari (Public Works), and Stephen Pritchard

The series is organised by the UCL Urban Laboratory and Folkestone Triennial 2017, with additional support from the Slade School of Fine Art, UCL and The Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL.

and I thought I was the only one to loudly profess my love across the harbors.

the Promo crew naturally huddled on the bow as we all cheered Edge's finish.

that's Round Island in the backround.

Bob's Edge (J130) finished 20th overall in the Mackinac Cup and 3rd in her division. Promo (NM 52) finished 11th in her section and 52nd overall. She beat our friends on the elegant Du Bois 50', Twister, finishing 71st overall.

Scout, a Sydney 41, owned by Jamie Hummert, one my favorite people to sail with, like, ever, finished at 10:10 am a moment behind Twister. I was luckily enough to be watching from the rocky shore in a light rain & jumped like a little kid with excitement. They deserve high praises for finishing 8th overall. According to Dale, "you would have loved it. we had total cooperation, a total copasetic crew." According to Awesome, Jamie & Pat McMahon noted doing 20 knots near Grey's Reef for a good hour. "We just hung on for that ride!!"

Today is scheduled to be a bad day for medical reasons, though it's just standard old man stuff, and the nature of it means I get a good nap. But it's got me in a mood, so I'll just post this pretty picture of a tree by the lake. I don't have anything more to say about it than that.

Curbar Edge sweeps high above the River Derwent offering spectacular views over the Peak District National Park. This imposing gritstone escarpment is popular with rock climbers, walkers and photographers. The moors are also home to a rare species of water vole, the adder and the golden ringed dragonfly. Today there was also an abundance of butterflies but they were very active and resisted posing for their photograph.

Curbar edge is one of the many places that DPG members visit in friendship. [nb. No longer a member of DPG] Together with their own website there is a small flickr presence here. www.flickr.com/groups/digital_photo_group/
