Incoterms is an abbreviation of ‘International Commercial Terms’, which are a series of globally recognised terms concerning international commercial laws. The purpose of these terms is to eliminate any ambiguities arising from interpreting different rules in different countries. Incoterms are widely incorporated into contracts worldwide, so it’s important for both the shipper and the consignee to understand the full forms of these terms and what they imply. This video briefly touches upon a few common Incoterms. A registered trademark of the International Chamber of Commerce, all Incoterms can be found on ICC’s new e-commerce platform, ICC Knowledge 2 Go at

Imagine being fined 50% of the landed value of your cargo, simply because you didn’t submit your cargo manifest on time. That could amount to tens of thousands of dollars. Late or wrong actions can result in unpleasant consequences for the customer, such as expensive customs delays and hefty fines. To discourage customers from making mistakes during the shipping process, Econship levies a maximum penal charge of $20 for problematic issues like late submissions and data mismatches. And while many companies don’t penalise for such matters, our penal charges exist in the interest of our customers—so that they don’t face any future hardship caused by small lapses or errors on their part.

A shipping line operates from one container yard in a port to another container yard. A shipper has to select an empty container from the depot and hand over the loaded container at the container yard - within the freetime, else a charge is levied. Similarly, a consignee has to pick up the loaded container from the container yard at the final destination and return the empty container to the depot within the freetime, else a charge is levied. Both Demurrage and Detention refer to the charges that are levied beyond the freetime period for any container. Usually, freetime is 14 days, but it’s always best to check with the port. Remember, you can purchase additional freetime at the time of filing a rate or placing a booking with Econship. Keep in mind that it’s always wiser to book with a line that charges a higher freight but a comparatively lower detention fee—else you may undercut all your savings if your cargo ever gets stuck!
