David Baron recounted the story of inventor Thomas Edison, planet hunter James Craig Watson, astronomer Maria Mitchell as well as other eclipse chasers of 1878 as part of his nationwide tour to coincide with the release of his new book “American Eclipse“.
On July 29, 1878, a total solar eclipse crossed America’s Wild West. The astronomical event lured many of the era’s great scientists to the frontier, and among them was Thomas Edison, who at age 31 trekked from New Jersey to Wyoming to test a device he had invented to study the hidden sun.
As America prepared for yet another total solar eclipse on August 21, 2017, award-winning journalist, author and broadcaster David Baron, a resident of Boulder, Colorado, visited Princeton Public Library for a talk and book signing.
Co-sponsored by the library and the Department of Astrophysical Sciences at Princeton University.
