Shadow banding just before c2 from the 2017 solar eclipse taken in Carbondale IL. This image has been adjusted to accentuate this very low contrast event.
Shadow banding looks like impossibly fast rushing water or millions of snakes slithering wildly over the ground. It's a low contrast event, so its hard to see unless the area is light in value. We set out a piece of foam core in hopes of seeing it and were not disappointed.
I've not seen a lot of information on shadow banding and don't know if it is a well described phenomenon. It only appears for about 40 seconds just before and just after a total eclipse (before c2 and after c3.) As you can see, it's most apparent and intense closest to those times. At those times the sun is reduced to a thin sliver of its normal size and the solar light is highly collimated, far more than usual. This seems to indicate that the shadows are a differential path phenomenon similar to what is seen in Schlieren imaging or mirages. The highly collimated light beam is raking through the atmosphere at a great lateral speed and so gets bent about by differences in the refractive index of the earth's atmosphere and this enables these wildly animated diffraction patterns to be produced.
As you can tell by our excited exclamations, it's pretty amazing to see first hand!
eclipse moon song is a gorgeous female adult Alaskan Tundra Wolf (canis lupus tundrarum) she is a black phase meaning she was born solid black, and has phased out to the salt n pepper tones you see in her adult coat. Black phase wolves no matter the subspecies continue to phase out for all their lives. Eclipse resides at a licensed Canadian Wolf Outreach Center and Eco Lodge in Saskatchewan. For more info on her, and the other captive wild ambassadors that reside here, please visit our main website.

Eclipse is a first person exploration game, set on a sentient planet with a dark past. At its core is mysterious story of a world filled with discovery and wonder. You awake after crash-landing to find yourself in a dreamscape environment, littered with the remnants of a failed civilisation.

Jayhawks, did you see the super moon eclipse Sunday? Tony Raper, a junior in mechanical engineering, was studying for a Mechanics of Materials test when he remembered it was time for the eclipse. Grabbing his camera and tripod, he drove to the Hill for a moonlit study break. Raper shared his technique for other photographers: He shot this on a 1.3 exposure at f9.0, 800 ISO, and 150mm.
Once the eclipse was over, it was back to Spahr Library. We hope you did well on your test, Tony!
Did you get a chance to #exploreKU under the #SuperBloodMoon?

December 2010 Lunar Eclipse (rare occurrence during the Summer Solstice in the Southern Hemisphere), photographed between 4:45 a.m. to 5:50 a.m. The totality phase was hidden by a neighboring building and, frankly, I was lazy enough to stay at home with my pijamas without finishing the sequence (specially considering the street lamps would ruin the final shots). I will try again in 2094.
"The lunar eclipse of 21 December 2010 took place in the night of the winter solstice in the northern hemisphere, which corresponds to the summer solstice in the southern hemisphere. It is a rare eclipse. If we inspect the list of eclipses of the last 2000 years, only one was found to coincide with the date of the solstice: the eclipse of December 21, 1638. Hopefully we will not have to wait 372 years to attend the next eclipse in the same conditions: it will occur in December 21, 2094, 84 years from now " (Source: Ronaldo Mourão).
