The new school year has been underway for a couple of weeks for most students in Des Moines except for the youngest students, who began on Wednesday. I stopped by one of our early childhood education centers as preschoolers began a new year.

More B.C. families will benefit from quality child care, thanks to investments that will encourage early childhood educator (ECE) recruitment and retention through better access to bursaries, professional development opportunities and wage enhancements.

People in every part of the province have more opportunities to train for a career as an early childhood educator (ECE), creating career paths for students and providing much-needed relief for families seeking child care, with new seats at post-secondary institutions opening this fall.

Twelve public post-secondary institutions will add a total of 314 student spaces in early childhood education programs, ranging from part-time certificates to full-time diplomas. About two-thirds of the new student spaces are designated for institutions serving rural and remote communities.

One of the first activities under our All Children Reading grant was a training workshop on repair and maintenance of the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) laptops that started on January 28th. Some of the participants were youth and staff who have been working with the laptops in our libraries; others include Zambia Library Service staff and IT personnel from other partner organizations. But this workshop also provided IT training for highly vulnerable youth who have found opportunities in our libraries, including girls and boys who have come off the streets and live in the communities of our libraries, seeking support to attend school. We hope that laptop repair will be an important income-generating activity for them, and, perhaps more importantly, give them confidence and enhanced self-esteem.

The workshop was led by Christoph Derndorfer, an OLPC expert from Vienna.
