U.S. Marines with Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 463 externally lift equipment from Marine Unmanned Aerial Squadron 3 on Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Dec. 10, 2020. During the training, CH-53E Super Stallion helicopters externally lifted the equipment needed to establish an unmanned aerial system platform at an expeditionary advanced operating base, to include Humvees, a generator trailer, recovery system, and a launcher system. The training demonstrated the capability of HMH-463’s heavy lift helicopters in support of VMU-3’s hub-and-spoke concept, and the composite assault support capabilities of Marine Aircraft Group 24. Statement of Significance

What is Significant?

The Harold Holt Swim Centre is a complex of indoor and outdoor public swimming pools and facilities. It was built in 1969 on the site of the original Malvern Swimming Baths. The then Malvern City Council decided to name the Centre in memory of Australian Prime Minister Harold Holt following his disappearance and presumed drowning at Portsea.

The swimming complex was designed by local architects Kevin Borland and Daryl Jackson and is one of the earliest buildings in Victoria of the Brutalist style.

The Harold Holt Swim Centre originally consisted of two indoor pools and, outdoors, an Olympic-sized pool, diving pool with dive tower, wading pool and changing rooms. The indoor centre is a glass and concrete structure distinguished by its unpainted concrete block and off-form concrete construction in which the patterns created by the timber form-work are clearly seen. The principal components of the building's functional and structural system are emphasised as positive elements of the building's form, in particular the circulation elements including concrete pedestrian ramps and semi-circular stair. There is a transparency through the entire site and natural light is maximised by glass walls on the indoor pool complex, enabling a clear line of sight from the diving pool on the northern boundary through the pool complex to High Street on the southern boundary.

In response to changing needs and continued functioning of the Centre, there have been several alterations to the original design. In 1988 multifunction rooms, offices and spa were added, the enclosure of part of the mezzanine concrete access ramp and the addition of an indoor therapeutic pool. In 1998 the original laminated timber truss members and ceiling of the indoor complex were replaced by painted steel decking and a small light tower was added to the main chamber. In 1999 the plant room was enlarged and painted. Alterations to the building have generally been sympathetic, although the addition of offices on the mezzanine level has restricted access around the indoor centre, interrupting the intended pattern of movement. There has been some loss of original texture, colour scheme, and transparency through the building due to alterations to the ceiling and plant room. These changes have to some extent compromised the original design of the building, however the intention of the design is still easily read in the external concrete forms and internal spaces. Unlike many Brutalist buildings, much of the off-form concrete remains unpainted leaving the imprint of the form-work clearly visible in the finished concrete

Kevin Borland is noted for his co-design of the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Pool, and the inventive Clyde Cameron College (1977). Daryl Jackson is considered an important proponent of Brutalism in Victoria. The Harold Holt Swim Centre is the earliest of Jackson's Brutalist designs and pre-dates other early Brutalist buildings in Victoria, notably the important Plumber and Gasfitters Union Building designed by Graeme Gunn (1970). Jackson continued his use of massed off-form concrete forms with function dictating design in such structures as the Princes Hill Secondary College (1972) and the M.L.C. Resources Building, Kew (1973).

The garden setting for the pool complex retains a number of plantings from the earlier Malvern Swimming Pool gardens, including Bhutan Cyprus (Cupressus torulosa), Canary Island Date Palm (Phoenix canariensis) and Canadian Poplar (Populus canescens).

The Harold Holt Swim Centre was awarded a Citation, Recreation Category, Victorian Chapter of the R.A.I.A. Architectural Awards in 1969.

How is it Significant?

The Harold Hold Swim Centre is of architectural significance to the State of Victoria.

Why is it Significant?

The Harold Hold Swim Centre is architecturally significant, being amongst the most notable, expressive, early and intact examples of the Brutalist movement that emerged in Victoria in the late-1960s. It represents the aesthetic, as well as ethical imperatives of the Brutalist style. The bold articulation of forms in textured off-form concrete and concrete blocks and glass, provides a sculptural imagery which is fundamental to Brutalist architecture. The heavy forms are balanced with focused transparency through the site, achieved by extensive use of natural lighting and the careful planning of the interior spaces.

Brutalism's ethical concern with social responsiveness is expressed through the expression of the construction materials as finished surfaces and the centrality of the user in the design of the building. This is clearly evident in the emphasis on circulation elements (the use of expressed ramps and stairs) and the articulation of the functional systems (ramps, skylights, service ducts, mezzanine observation deck and in the overall clarity and integration of the building, pools and gardens).

The Harold Hold Swim Centre is architecturally significant as the work of two important Victorian architects, Kevin Borland and Daryl Jackson. The design of the Centre reflects the development of architecture in Victoria through the 1970s, including the purposeful arrangement of masses and voids; the expression of the materials of construction as finished surfaces; the expression of structural form; and transparency for the user through directional internal planning.

The Harold Holt Swim Centre is of some historical and social significance as a memorial to the local member and then incumbent Australian Prime Minister, Harold Holt who disappeared, presumed drowned at Cheviot beach near Portsea, prior to the opening of the complex.

At the local level, the site is important for the provision of aquatic recreation for the people of the south-eastern suburbs from the construction of the original Malvern Baths in 1926 to the present. The place retains the planted banks of the earlier pool, as well as the square of parkland fronting High Street."

This is the external structure of a cilliate, likey a paramecium. It was negative stained using Nigrosin to reveal the pelical external structure. The peristome is at the upper right.

A culture rich in ciliates was applied to a microscope slide and 1 drop of 2 % Nigrosin in water was added. The drop was smeared across 2/3 of the slide and let to dry. As the water evaporates, the stain concentrates and most of the ciliates are found in the more concentrated end of the smear.

External Affairs Minister Humza Yousaf today visited the Scottish Diaspora Tapestry the day before it opens to the public.

Mr Yousaf met stitchers from all over the world who have contributed to the tapestry, as well as artist Andrew Crummy (above), as they made the final preparations ahead of opening to the public at Prestonpans Community Centre tomorrow (31 May).

Mr Yousaf said:

“I saw the early stitching of some of these beautiful panels when I was visiting India and Pakistan in 2013. To see them completed now, alongside the tales from so many other countries Scots have influenced is a double inspiration – not only for embroiderers who visit but also for what we Scots today can and maybe should seek to achieve ourselves. Its Scottish touring exhibitions will make an outstanding artistic contribution to our Homecoming Scotland 2014 Programme.

“We have been delighted in Government to give our wholehearted support to Andrew Crummy and his team and help fund this project from its very beginnings in 2011. It is an imaginative and powerful way to strengthen and develop our international links across the diaspora, and we encourage everyone who can to take the chance to see the tapestry as it tours Scotland this year.”

M-72 is a Soviet copy of the German Wehrmacht BMW R-71 motorcycle. The external distinction between them is that original BMW had the fuel tank with flattened top. Due to the direct Josef Stalin's order five pieces of BMW have been bought anonymously in Sweden. Soviet engineers had no any technical documentation - only the very machines. And they have elaborated all necessary documentation and technology by themselves. Mass production of motorcycles started under the designation M-72 at once on five motorcycle workshops: in Moscow, Leningrad, Kharkov, Gorky and Irbit cities. By this way Red Army have get the excellent motorcycles, which have shown the best service in scout and liaison units during the Great Patriotic war 1941-1945 against Nazis.

M-72 with sidecar were usually armed by Diegtyariov Pekhotny (DP) infantry machine gun of 7.62 mm caliber. Very few pieces were armed by 82-mm mortar instead of lull. M-72 production run immidiatelly since 1941 till 1960.

Curiously but being armament carrier M-72 motorcycles were considered in Soviet military account system as 'armored vehicles' - together with tanks and self-propelled guns.

After the War M-72s were widely used in Soviet police (militia), in Frontier guard and other state institutes - naturally, in army too.

M-72 were the dream of every Soviet motorcycle fun. But only since 1955 the personal ownership of this model was allowed. And all private motorcycles still were on the military account and they ought to be enlisted in a case of war.

Especially this piece has been built by his owner - the member of Kharkov Vintage Automobiles Funs Club - just from the Army depot - together with machine gun istallation. So this piece actually did not take part in the WWII. But been stored at Army depot it remained in the original, authentic state - just the same as war-time motorcycles war. Only MG's barrel has been drilled due to the Police regulations to make impossible it use as a weapon.

To inspire others toward conserving wildlife resources, at risk species, and habitats, nothing is more compelling than a good story— especially when that story is easily accessible on the web. Dan Chapman, Mark Davis, Roy Hewitt and Phil Kloer have demonstrated their excellence in telling Southeast Region stories that have inspired the public on conservation issues ranging from the impacts of three hurricanes to the value of collaborative conservation that balances wildlife needs with the ability to use lands for economic benefit.

Giving their stories and photos a home on an attractively redesigned website and a new website section called Nature’s Good

Neighbors has helped, too, with analytics showing a 28.5 percent increase in Southeast Region page-views over a nine-month period in 2018. Also, many third-party organizations are republishing stories from the region in their own publications. These organizations include state wildlife agencies, local news organizations, commercial blogs, and industry trade groups, which brings our story to a wider audience.

Neste momento, eu sou a pessoa mais chateada, irritada, decepcionada e perdida neste mundo. Eu perdi todas as minhas fotos.

Right now, I am the person most upset, angry, disappointed and lost in this world. I just lost ALL my pictures. THEY ALL. With two months of use, my external hd Seagate simply stopped working. Its engine was burnt, and took with him all my photos. The manufacturer does not have support here in Brazil, and I'll have to pay $ 1,500 (about $ 800) to MAYBE get my photos back. So I ask that you do not trust this brand. Really. I do not want anyone to go through what I'm going through now.
