Great expectations...

From This Old Horse's website - At This Old Horse. Gypsy came to us as part of the Hallelujah Horses mission. We learned that she was likely a domestic horse turned loose to fend for herself before joining up with a wild Mustang band. She was captured in the 1990’s after she was found living in a cattle chute with a halter and two lead ropes hanging off the sides. She was transferred to a sanctuary, adopted out several times only to be returned when she was uncooperative and failed to meet the adopters’ expectations. An accident caused her to lose an eye and some years later she was spooked and chased by some teenagers causing her to bang into a protrusion where she lost her other eye.

Completely blind, she was housed with another blind horse and a young stallion (Owen) that had broken his leg. When their South Dakota sanctuary failed in 2016, a home was found for the stallion but he refused to leave her and the other blind mare behind and it was this story of Owen’s loyalty that inspired her rescuers to find a home with us for all three of them.

The stories of the horses served by This Old Horse are full of heart-wrenching trials and tribulations...and triumphs.

So why is it that we are moved to tears when a volunteer comes out on the first sunny day of 2018, parks her lawn chair and reads a classic children’s book to Gypsy while she eats her hay and listens?

Because it is a simple act of kindness. This mare has had a long, tough life filled with rejection and neglect. But not here. And no more. And maybe a sunny afternoon, a good book and a compassionate friend is all she needs. Maybe it’s all any of us need. Love is good.

Great expectations...

I was approached by someone who wanted something 'special'.

For days I was agonizing, racking my brain!

I invited her around for a chat and a bite to eat, I noticed how, when left by herself or while I was in conversation with someone else, she looked down and hugged her belly.

As I am very much a night person, I was inspired in the middle of the night, suddenly sat up in bed and had the PERFECT image in front of my mind's eye.

I consider pregnancy a very beautiful natural event, but also private, so that's why she's in silhouette.

Everybody who knows her, immediately recognizes her profile.

Prepared the studio and lights, with Paul's help, in she came, I gave her one of my Japanese house-kimonos, she took the pose with total ease.

Took a couple of polaroids, to check the angle of the lights to perfection, then I took THE SHOT, not 2 or 3, no, just the ONE!

Most people say, it's like she is looking into a 'crystal' ball, what will the future bring?

It was a girl...

Done on Hasselblad (square neg 6X6), only the sides are cropped.

Thank you, Magda.

This is my 2016 Pete! She’s a Fitzgerald glider, therefore, no DEF, no emissions. Best investment we’ve made in a long time. She’s loaded with lots of extras, plenty of horse power with a 500hp 60 series Detroit, 8” straight pipes, and plenty of creature comforts inside.

The We are Here challenge on April 4 2017 was: Seeds in your hand

Old dog, new treats, and an increasing skill set.

I've been looking into getting a slightly less wide lens to partner the trusty 10-20mm, as I do find occasions where I want to be a little tighter in composition. After much deliberation, I decided that I couldn't justify the cost of a 17-40L, lovely piece of glass though it is, given my current level of experience.

Unfortunately, the other options (Sigma 20-35mm, ETC) aren't significantly cheaper to justify their flaws.

Instead, after a lot of googling, I went the bargain route and picked up a Tamron 19-35mm off Ebay for £50 + postage. This was the first time I've tried it (massive plus point - 77mm filters) and I'm pretty impressed.

Yes, it has some barrel distortion, but so does my Sigma 10-20mm costing 8 times the price! Sharpness and colour definition seem good. If all the shots come out like this, I'll be a happy man.

Taken this morning at Hauxley with Coquet Island as a backdrop and a spectacular sunrise sidelighting the rocks. One of the nicest mornings I've had for a while...

The European Experience 2016 Exceeds Expectations

What a weekend! We went into the weekend not knowing what to expect being a first year event, but left excited and ready for next year. Matthew Bounds and his crew at Sowo Partners moved the popular Southern Worthersee event from Helen, GA to a new event called “The European Experience” in Savannah Georgia, and it went off without a hitch. The two-day event was a welcomed refresh filled with friendly faces in an exciting new location with an excellent post-event night life in downtown Savannah.

We offered APR ECU and TCU upgrades at the event, as we do at nearly all events we attend, and we nearly doubled our flash count from years past at SOWO. We want to thank every customer who partook in the sale, and want to thank all those who stopped by to talk shop and shoot the breeze. Last but not least, we want to thank Matt Bounds and the SOWO Partners crew for putting on an amazing show we’re excited to attend next year.

Take a moment to view a few photos we grabbed at the event, and see you next year!

I bought the Sprocket Rocket, hoping I would get very cinematic images, like the wonderful pictures of Jeff Bridges with his Widelux. Clearly, for a first roll, I'm far from having attained that goal :) But it was an interesting test, and, as a movie fan, I still like the aspect ratio.

I shot this one at the French skydiving championships.

On a Barbie birthday a few years ago I mentioned how despite my sizable Barbie collection few were of the blonde bombshell herself which is something that didn't change much since. What has, however, is the overall brand quality. Not only are we getting full prints items but dolls in a variety of sizes and shades to wear them. Of course there's still a long way for Babs to go (still waiting on an articulated AA male doll for sale @ mattel) but it's so fulfilling to see Babs & co just get better with age.

Happy Birthday gurl!!
