A Doctor on the California Trail: The Diary of Dr. John Hudson Wayman from Cambridge City, Indiana, to the Gold Fields in 1852 ed. by Edgeley Woodman Todd. 1971.
Dr. Wayman, like tens of thousands of others in the 1850s, braved the trek west in search of California gold. This map shows the doctor's trail from St. Louis to Sonora, California in 1852. From 1848 until the time Wayman arrived in California, the non-Native American population exploded from 14,000 to 223,000. According to first person accounts like Wayman's, the traffic on the trail was so intense that even modern day Angelenos would be appalled. Wagons choked the dirt roads literally as far as the eye could see.
