New Canadian National GE ET44AC No. 3067 leads an eastbound manifest freight through Solomon, Alberta, on the morning of August 7, 2016. The Brule Range is cloaked in low clouds, which will burn off in a couple of hours revealing another sunny, blue sky day in Jasper National Park.
A Canadian National ET44AC leads Union Pacific's Ogden, Utah - Green River, Wyoming manifest through new snow at Henefer, Utah on Jan. 7, 2023. UP recently deactivated ACS (Automatic Cab Signals) on the Evanston Sub, making the possibility of foreign power leading a train possible. Rejoice!
A long line of covered grain hoppers trails a trio of Canadian National GE locomotives westward through Griffith, Indiana.

A trio of brand new Union Pacific GE ET44AC (ET44AH) locomotives work a hefty manifest freight up the steep grade of Tehachapi Pass, with much of the train hidden in the Allard horseshoe curve at Bealville, California, on March 1, 2016.
A CN oil train rumbles through Juniper Beach Provincial Park. The park is located on the north side of the Thompson River west of the town of Savona and protects the dry sagebrush and desert ecology of the area.
Eastbound CN 348 pulls a cut of cars out of the yard at Swan Landing, AB with a fresh and clean ET44AC on point.
Three new UP GE ET44AC (ET44AH) locomotives power a southbound Z train at Bealville, California, on February 24, 2016. Winter rains have made the hills around Tehachapi Pass a carpet of emerald green, which won’t last for long as the days get longer and temperatures rise.
This manifest has just left the Hamilton Junction heading Toronto pulled by a couple of Tier-4 Canadian National ET44AC. (7/2/16)
Questo infinito "manifest" proveniente dal confine statunitense sul Niagara ha appena terminato di attraversare il nodo di Hamilton, On. diretto verso Toronto al traino di una coppia di nuove ET44AC della Canadian National.

Standing out well against dark morning clouds, CN's new WC Heritage unit creeps up to the south end of the double track between Valley and Byron, waiting for M336's helpers to start making their way back to Fondy. This B790 unit potash train is en route to Indiana Harbor Belt's Norpaul Yard in Franklin Park, Illinois.

The WC Heritage Unit makes its first visit to the former CNIC Gulf Division as it leads a grain train bound for Reserve, Louisiana over the Hatchie River Bridge on the Fulton Sub.
CN ET44AC 3023, the EJ&E heritage unit, leads CN M347 North through Iron Junction, MN. Iron Junction is now the furthest North I've shot a locomotive in EJ&E colors.
Despite it being geographically closer to home than any other part of the KCS, the Gateway is probably the part of the railroad that I covered the least, with exception to the far south end going toward Mexico. With seemingly nothing of value going on in Kansas City and clouds expected to move in from the west during afternoon hours, the easy decision was made to chase this eastbound GHVJV15 after seeing the remarkably clean (for KCS standards) power on the point. This elevator at Higginsville, Missouri is one of many composition possibilities on this very scenic line which stretches from Kansas City to Roodhouse, Illinois, where this train will take a left hand turn to load at Bartlett Grain's loop in Jacksonville.
CN's Grande Cache Subdivision crosses the Wapiti River south of Grande Prairie Alberta on a large steel trestle.
Getting close enough to the trestle to photograph proved to be more difficult than expected.
Route A was shelved due to the lack of ownership of a lifted "Rig Rocket" pickup truck. Route B was selected, however the latter did not get us as close to the bridge as initially intended. An almost 2 km flight of the chicken was required to produce the shot you see here, of train A458 heading northbound. he first thing that came to mind when I laid eyes on the bridge was "Damn that's big!" and getting the bird into position in time to frame the train on the massive structure proved to be yet another challenge.
CSX train I136 ducks under the bridges of the light rail, the Liberty road bridge, and an enclosed conveyer as it makes its way through Pittsburgh's South Side neighborhood. The train is about to pass the redeveloped area known as "The Highline", a project completed in 2018 to revitalize 1904 built Pittsburgh Terminal and Transfer Company's warehouses into a mixed use community space. The rebuilt overpass over the main here allows for great morning and evening shots and utilizing one of the spaces' many lounge chairs is probably the most comfortable you can be while waiting for a train.
While I was expecting the arrival of eastbound CN freight 416 at Wabamun Lake, I didn't know there would be this much power on the head end. Nine units is a little tough to frame into the shot, but taking a page from the Book of Grumpy, "At least the leader's clean!"
BNSF's snow plowing in the Twin Ports and Minnesota Northwoods continued again with an ex-GN dozer working the Brainerd Sub. CN 8906 and a BNSF ET44AC provided the power, seen here flanging the ex-NP mainline.
This was the third attempt/hike into the ex Virginian signals at 'Simon' on the NS Guyandotte River District in southern West Virginia. The prior two days resulted in long dark shadows before the trains arrived although made for some cool shots anyways. Here's NS coal train #851 from Itmann on its way towards Gilbert and the Pokey mainline.
An eastbound Canadian National intermodal train cruises along the shore of a lake at Henry House, Alberta, on August 6, 2016. Rear DPU GE ET44AC No. 3011 pushes away on double stack containers past yellow wildflowers blooming near water’s edge.
The Pine Pass in North Eastern British Columbia is a relatively obscure pass through the Rocky Mountains. While Canadian Pacific gained fame with their crossing to the south, Pacific Great Eastern's grade gained little attention outside of the province when constructed.
To this day very few railfans venture to this are of the country, now under the helm of Canadian National and operated as the Chetwynd Subdivision. One of the more iconic locations is the southern portal of the Azouzetta Tunnel at mile 597.9
On this September morning we witness southbound loaded coal train C765 assault the pass with 2 of General Electric's newest locomotive models in Run 8. Five sets later and the Chetwynd Sub became a new favorite line to photograph
A solo Union Pacific ET44AC leads a southbound loaded ethanol train as it departs from Des Moines, Iowa on the Trenton Subdivision. After getting the light across the Iowa Interstate and BNSF diamonds in town, the train rolls across the Des Moines River bridge and heads out of town towards Kansas City.

Canadian National's southbound U700 turns onto the Edgewood Cutoff at Edgewood, IL, led by newly-repainted EJ&E heritage ET44AC #3023. This petcoke train reportedly loaded at the BP refinery in Whiting, IN and is headed to New Orleans for unloading.
Thanks to WR, SS, TR, and all the Facebook birdies who provided reporting in near real time, convincing me to grab the kiddos and head out in a light drizzle on a really dark day. I was planning on staying home.

A pair of Canadian National ET44AC's bracket a former Citirail ES44AC as they lead manifest freight M383 west from Toronto's MacMillan Yard to Sarnia, soaring over the Bronte Creek trestle outside of Burlington, Ontario on the Halton Subdivision. The bridge has an interesting track arrangement, with double track on either side and comes down to single track for a control point that encompasses the trackage over the bridge.

Barreling through downtown Waukesha, Wisconsin with hot doublestack train Q198, CN's Elgin, Joliet & Eastern heritage unit, ET44AC 3023, passes L504's power- including OG "J" unit, GP38-2 703. Who in 2008 could have imagined a scene like this?
Norfolk Southern empties for Itman roll by the signals at 'Mada' on NS's Guyandotte District near the small town of Wyoming, WV.
Very few freights use the CN South Bend Subdivision west of Griffith Jct., but this is one of them originating at Clearing Yard. CN L503 heads east through Munster Indiana with the Wisconsin Central heritage ET44AC leading one of the two veterans ET44AC's.
Like everywhere else, the legacy Southern-style signals on this line are now being systematically replaced.

CN Train Q116, with the BC Rail Huuuritage unit in charge, rolls past "Millionaires Row" at Wabamun Lake Alberta. I've been told the cabin owners had permission years ago to build on the lake side of the tracks, and to this day CN has made no attempt to prevent them from accessing the lake. This could change in the future, as CN is busy adding a second track to most of the Edson Sub, with work well underway east and west of this row of "cabins".
I'm sure the lawyers will get richer from the double tracking of this section of line, since most of the cabins are passed down through generations of owners rather then listed on the open market. Last i checked property on smaller lakes in Alberta was just shy of a million bucks, so CN may need to get the big cheque book out to get what they want!
