Founder and brewmaster of Kinn Bryggeri, Espen Lothe, giving a talk about the future of craft brewing at Fremtidsbryggeriet during Bergen Ølfestival 2013.
Lothe stressed some interesting points that future craft brewers should keep in mind:
Quality: Craft breweries today focus too much on having a wide variety of beer types rather than making a few good ones. Some have 20-30 beers in their lineup which means it will take much longer to finely tune recipes to make each beer as good as possible. Lothe thinks the future of craft brewing depends on making fewer but better beers and he listed trappist brewery Orval as an extreme example of a brewery making just one type of beer, but of very high quality. Why should every craft brewery make wheat ale, saison, pale ale, IPA, imperial / double IPA, porter and imperial stout when most of them struggle with consistency and even quality for each beer they brew?
Extreme brewing: Most craft breweries spend a lot of resources making extreme beers, such as massively hopped double / triple IPAs and high alcohol imperial styles of beer, which might be interesting a few times but is not going to attract the average beer drinker and may even wear out the taste buds of seasoned beer geeks. Craft beer should be about a good drinking experience. Flavorful? Yes. In your face? No.
Lager beer: The large majority of craft beers are top fermented ales, few make bottom fermented lagers. But lager is so much more than the insipid yellow fizz from the large international breweries, just look at the great lager traditions of Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic with pilsners, vienna lagers, märzens, dunkles, helles and so on. Good craft lagers should stand a good chance competing with the industrial versions because craft brewers will use more and better ingredients, not additives such as corn or rice.

Welcome Message
Dear colleagues,
On behalf of the Spanish Society for Parenteral and
Enteral Nutrition (SENPE), we would like to invite you
to the 40th ESPEN Congress 2018, which will be held
for the 4th time in Spain.
Following the Congresses in Barcelona (1987, 2012)
and Madrid (2000), the Spanish Society would like
to welcome all ESPEN members again to the city of
Madrid.
Madrid is the capital of Spain and one of the main
European metropolis. It is a captivating city including
some of the most visited art museums in the world
and a cultural heritage where history and modernity
blend effortlessly together. Its bright sunny weather
offers the perfect setting for a walk through the wide
green areas in the city or any other leisure activity of
your choice. In addition to this, the city´s kind-hearted
people are active participants in offering visitors
a warm welcome.
With the theme “Nutrition without borders” we want
to express our interest to explore new topics in clinical
nutrition, in different clinical settings, besides the
multidisciplinary and worldwide environment of the
Congress.
Working in close collaboration with the ESPEN
Committee Members, we have developed an attractive
program that aims to continue ESPEN’s effort
to improve Nutritional Care and Education. With
the occasion of celebrating the 40th anniversary of
ESPEN Congress and in order to remember the main
achievements of the Society during this long trajectory
we will “season” the schedule with some special
events.
We are convinced that the program of ESPEN 2018
offers a great opportunity for physicians, dietitians,
pharmacists, nutritionists, scientists and nurse
involved in the field of nutrition and metabolism to
meet and discuss cutting edge science in an informal
atmosphere, strengthening old and sparkling new
collaborations.
