Siproeta stelenes (malachite) is a neotropical brush-footed butterfly (family Nymphalidae). The malachite has large wings that are black and brilliant green or yellow-green on the upperside and light brown and olive green on the underside. It is named for the mineral malachite, which is similar in color to the bright green on the butterfly's wings. Typically, the wingspread is between 8.5 and 10 cm (3.3 and 3.9 in). The malachite is found throughout Central and northern South America, where it is one of the most common butterfly species. Its distribution extends as far north as southern Texas and the tip of Florida, to Cuba as subspecies S. s. insularis (Holland, 1916), and S. s. biplagiata, and south to Brazil.
Adults feed on flower nectar, rotting fruit, dead animals, and bat dung. Females lay eggs on the new leaves of plants in the family Acanthaceae, especially ruellia. The larvae are horned, spiny, black caterpillars with red markings.
Malachites often are confused with Philaethria dido. They have similar coloration, but their wing shapes are different.

I find hippos one of the most rewarding subjects to photograph in the wild. Especially when you are on a boat, they give you lot of photo opportunities.

Slightly larger and heavier than the House Sparrow, the Spanish Sparrow differs in plumage, bill-shape and range, although in some areas, and especially in Mediterranean regions, both species hybridize, making more complicated the taxonomy of these species.
On the road to Puno: the lake (Laguna Lagunillas) is one of the highest lakes in the Andean plateaus, located in the department of Puno at a height of about 4,174 m. There are 4 small islands, its dimensions are 18.6 km long and 5.8 km wide and a maximum area of 66 km ² with a maximum depth of 47.6 m. It is a place for all the fauna of the region, especially the pink flamingo.
Amazing especially since we had contemplated sitting amongst the driftwood instead of on the now exposed expanse of pebble beach facing the out-going tide! If I had not stood up to take a pano view of the mountains, ocean (fjord), beach and driftwood behind us, I would have missed it. Yes, timing is everything in photography.
Today's fun fact - Black Swans were presumed not to exist because there was only ever records of white ones. Then when Europeans discovered they did in fact exist, in WA Australia, the phrase "black swan" was coined. The Black Swan by scholar Nassim Taleb, was ranked by the Sunday Times one of the 12 most influential books since World War II. Taleb's black swan theory states that dramatic unexpected events matter more to history than regular happenings.
Bit simpler for me, I just like to photograph them on the local lake. Especially at sunset. Like little floating silhouettes. (bit of an older pic, revisiting some unloved pics from my Flickr exile years)
European Pine martens are a species I have long since wanted to photograph especially in their habitat however it did take a trip to the Scottish Highlands to fulfil my goal, up at 5 am each morning my patience paid off and over four days many images were taken. Feeling very privileged and also delighted at being able to see these creatures in their environment. Dave
Competition is fierce for the female. Especially with another male sitting right next to him. We sighted two of them on farm posts singing close to the country road much to our delight.
This is the peak of their breeding season and the calls are everywhere in the countryside. Hoarse two noted calls that permeate long distances. The females are very quiet, hard to sight and I believe judge the male by the quality of their singing. I cannot tell the difference between the calls though.
This bird is a photographers favorite and I am quite lucky to get such a good close up shot. They are extremely shy and disappear into the bush / fields when they see anyone very far.

The Reichstag building is home to Germany’s Parliament, the Bundestag. The classically pedimented and columned building was built in the 1890s, seriously damaged by fire in 1933, and restored to host the parliament of the newly reunified Germany in the 1990s. The Reichstag is now the second most visited attraction in Germany, not least because of the huge glass dome that was erected on the roof as a gesture to the original 1894 cupola, giving an impressive view over the city, especially at night. Dahi baray (or dahi bhallay) are a popular snack in Pakistan. Especially in the month for Ramadan where they are served for Iftar (the sunset meal when Muslims break their fast) with other items such as fruit chaat, keema samosas, pakoras and chole chaat. They can also be served as a light snack with tea, or as a side with dinner, or as a component to make mix chaat or dahi baray chaat. It is also a common street food snack, with vendors coming up with their unique toppings, and spice mixes.
Dahi baray are made by grinding white lentils into a paste which is then fried to make lentil fritters. The fried lentils are then soaked in luke warm water till soft, and then added into a creamy yoghurt sauce. The soft and pillowy dahi baray are then topped with spices and sauces. The most common spices include roasted and ground cumin powder (bhuna zeera), red chili powder and salt along with a tamarind chutney and green chutney.

It was especially pleasing to see this Mistle Thrush with a bill full of worms to feed to its young having seen in the garden the tragic loss of one of these beautiful thrushes to a Sparrowhawk, I believe. The ways of Nature can be hard as well as joyful to observe.

We did it twice, once in summer and once in winter and I found the winter journey even more impressive along this mountain range that forms the backbone of the long-stretched Snaefellsnes peninsula culminating in Snaefellsjokull volcano at the tip of it.

I used very thin paper, because there are lots of layers. The eyes came out a bite rumbled, looks like scarves from the 'fight'. Don't know who is the winner here…..;-))

The Wrekin is a large hill (1335 ft in elevation) and well known landmark in eastern Shropshire, England. It is to the right in this photo with the red light on top of it.
The night before we had come home after dinner to see the moon setting almost directly over the light on the Wrekin on a cloudless night. Unfortunately, by the time I got my camera and tripod, the moon had set completely. This night the moon sadly set in a different place and there was some cloud.

a white fronted bee eater (merops albicollis).
this kind of bee eater con be found in south africa all the year around.it's a lovely bird and in some areas quite common.
in photography the hardest part is in this case to get the details of the white front.the whites are very easy to be "fired" especially in canon.take care on exposure!

If you are traveling in Tuscany, especially here in Val D'orcia, you will quickly see what your biggest problem is. It's to decide what you don't want to photograph.
So far we've focused on a few particularly spectacular locations at particular times of the day (sunrise and sunset) where it's hard to avoid the results being extraordinarily beautiful.
But when you're on your way to such places and just want to get from A to B, you're driving through a landscape that really keeps calling out to you: "Stop !! Take pictures !!!"
Then it's the middle of the day and you come across a view like this, for example.
You just can't get ahead because you keep stopping, walking back and HAD to take a picture.
I chose two of these "snapshots" for today and tomorrow (which was the next challenge) to make this clear to you.
Oh yes ... sometimes it's not easy :-)
Wenn Ihr in der Toskana unterwegs seid, vor allem hier im Val D'orcia werdet Ihr sehr schnell erkennen, was Euer größtes Problem ist. Es ist die Entscheidung was Ihr nicht fotografieren wollt.
Bisher haben wir uns auf wenige besonders spektakuläre Orte zu besonderen Tageszeiten (Sonnenaufgang und-untergang) konzentriert, wo es kaum zu verhindern ist, dass die Ergebnisse außergewöhnlich schön sind.
Doch wenn Ihr dann unterwegs zu solchen Orten seid und einfach nur von A nach B wollt, dann fahrt Ihr durch eine Landschaft die Euch wirklich ununterbrochen zuruft: " Anhalten !! Fotografieren !!!"
Dann ist es mitten am Tag und Ihr kommt zum Beispiel an so einem Ausblick vorbei.
Da kommt man einfach nicht voran, weil man ständig anhält, zurückläuft und ein Foto machen MUSS.
Zwei von diesen "Schnappschüssen" habe ich für Heute und für Morgen ausgesucht (was gleich die nächste Herausforderung war) um Euch dies zu verdeutlichen.
Ach ja ... man hat's schon manchmal nicht leicht :-)

Off the water and back to the woods to soak up some of the remaining color which is holding fairly well, especially given the strong winds we've had the last few days. I went out specifically to take a bunch of photos to upload into my "new friend," with the single and not unrealistic (I thought) hope of being able to find them...which I did, but not until after numerous wrong guesses as to where I thought they seemingly should be...like "Pictures."
By the way, I appreciate your support and tips re: my new desk top (not a laptop as some seem to have guessed), and it progresses slowly. I really don't use a computer for much other than my photos so I haven't even begun to tap the capabilities of this one...and am uncertain as to whether I will even try or not. What I would like to find is the 90% of my photos which did not appear with the others when I transferred them from the flash drive to the new computer. 10% are in fancy new folders...the rest unpleasantly invisible. Everything sees very hit and miss...mostly miss for now causing me to simply walk away from the computer and find other occupations. My learning curve and patience have both suffered with old age.

Pepsi is our fiesty female German Shepherd Dog (GSD). She is a long coat GSD who is 6 years old. A typical female GSD she love to to close to the family at all times and will follow you like a shadow.
She is adorable, loyal and loves to play, especially with a ball or stick.
The mallard is a dabbling duck that belongs to the subfamily Anatinae. Both sexes have an area of white-bordered black or iridescent blue feathers called a speculum on their wings; males especially tend to have blue speculum feathers.
I loooove autumn (especially the spooky season) and I am so glad that Kirby took this picture with me ♡♡ hopefully there will be more in the future :*♡

A pretty rare bird in our country and the males are especially prized by birdwatchers. The Lesser Kestrel is migrant from Mediterranean, Afghanistan and Central Asia and winters in Africa / Pakistan. Few birds - literally a handful that can be counted with the fingers - winter in India.
The males are easier to distinguish from the Common Kestrel due to the easy to spot differences. But the female is hard to spot in the field. The behaviour and flying is similar to the Common Kestrel and in the are we visited, there were half a dozen Kestrels and couple of these males. It was a beautiful bird and I missed getting much better shots as I was exploring another part of the lake where I got nothing.

Buchen (Fagus)
Die Buchen (Fagus) sind die einzige Pflanzengattung der Unterfamilie der Fagoideae innerhalb der Familie der Buchengewächse (Fagaceae). Die etwa elf Arten besitzen eine weite Verbreitung in den gemäßigten Gebieten der Nordhalbkugel in Nordamerika und Eurasien.
Beschreibung
Buchen-Arten sind sommergrüne Bäume, die Wuchshöhen von bis zu 40 Metern erreichen. Ihre Rinde ist grau und glatt und zeigt nur selten im Alter eine geringe Borkenbildung, sie gehört daher zu den Peridermbäumen. Die dünn und hin- und hergebogenen Zweige besitzen eine braune Rinde. Die 1 bis 3 Zentimeter langen Knospen sind lang spindelförmig, oft spreizend, von brauner Farbe, mit zahlreichen Knospenschuppen bedeckt und silbrig behaart.
Die Laubblätter stehen wechselständig, an aufrechten Zweigen schraubig, an abstehenden sind sie mehr oder weniger zweizeilig angeordnet. Die Laubblätter sind in Blattstiel und Blattspreite gegliedert. Die Blattspreite ist glänzend grün, ganzrandig, leicht buchtig gezähnt, wellig gebuchtet oder fein gezähnt. Die Nebenblätter sind schmal und hinfällig.
Beech (Fagus)
Beech (Fagus) is a genus of deciduous trees in the family Fagaceae, native to temperate Europe, Asia, and North America. Recent classifications recognize 10 to 13 species in two distinct subgenera, Engleriana and Fagus. The Engleriana subgenus is found only in East Asia, distinctive for their low branches, often made up of several major trunks with yellowish bark. The better known Fagus subgenus beeches are high-branching with tall, stout trunks and smooth silver-grey bark. The European beech (Fagus sylvatica) is the most commonly cultivated.
Beeches are monoecious, bearing both male and female flowers on the same plant. The small flowers are unisexual, the female flowers borne in pairs, the male flowers wind-pollinating catkins. They are produced in spring shortly after the new leaves appear. The fruit of the beech tree, known as beechnuts or mast, is found in small burrs that drop from the tree in autumn. They are small, roughly triangular and edible, with a bitter, astringent, or in some cases, mild and nut-like taste. They have a high enough fat content that they can be pressed for edible oil.
The European species Fagus sylvatica yields a utility timber that is tough but dimensionally unstable. It is widely used for furniture framing and carcase construction, flooring and engineering purposes, in plywood and in household items like plates, but rarely as a decorative wood. The timber can be used to build chalets, houses, and log cabins.
Beech wood also makes excellent firewood, easily split and burning for many hours with bright but calm flames. Slats of washed beech wood are spread around the bottom of fermentation tanks for Budweiser beer. Beech logs are burned to dry the malt used in some German smoked beers, giving the beers their typical flavor. Beech is also used to smoke Westphalian ham, various sausages, and some cheeses.
Cat hugs her kittens and licks them while they try to escape.
It's hard not to love a kitten, even if you're a cat. In general, most adult cats will tolerate, if not show affection for, any kitten -- especially their own.
Dionysus also spelled Dionysos, also called Bacchus, a nature god of fruitfulness and vegetation, especially known as a god of wine and ecstasy.
Wine was a religious focus in the cult of Dionysus and was his earthly incarnation. Wine could ease suffering, bring joy, and inspire divine madness.
If he somehow came to Pyles, he would probably like to be hosted here, with the green vine deeply rooted next to the blue door of the old stone house.
