Not photoshopped. A loaded coal train from West Elk Mine rolls uphill into Thompson Springs, Utah as late afternoon thunderstorms subside and the setting sun imposes a double rainbow and magnificent storm light over the landscape. By nightfall, the coal train will assault the grades of Soldier Summit and I will continue my eastward trek home.
After a line of Summer thunderstorms moved through, a beautiful sunset appeared as CSX's specially painted GEVO 'Spirit of Our Armed Forces' 1776 leads Charlotte to Jacksonville intermodal train I037 through the Charlotte bedroom community of Matthews, NC. The fact that the engine was sporting a Leslie S5T horn made it all the better!

M693 splits the Calgon intermediates. These signals were cut over in December of 22. Though the Big Sandy was not our focus of the trip it was nice to take a small break off and see what it had to offer. Lots of new ideas for a return trip.

Soon the flood loading chute will move into position and engineer Hal Osborne will begin flood loading the head 20 cars before tying down for the night. ‘Plug Mode’ is used here alike many flood loaders all across Appalachia.
This met coal operation last loaded coal in early 2020 due to Covid. The coal that was loaded into this train has been sitting on the ground for almost a year; enough for this train and possibly one more this month. After the stockpile has been loaded the Anjean loadout will again sit idle indefinitely awaiting its fate.
CSX's Seaboard System Mullet Motor ES44AH 1982 was leading train I-031 as it rolled along an aging stone wall built by the Baltimore and Ohio in Mount Royal many many many years ago.
CSX's Mullet Series is starting to grow on me-it's something different out there to motivate me to actually head trackside on a Class One railroad.
The party is in the back!
After loading the last of their 50 cars at Coronado Coal’s Anjean loadout, veteran NF&G engineer Hal Osborne guides Rainelle Mine Run H801 off the 1.7% grade along Big Clear Creek in Anjean, West Virginia. He’ll pull down and pick his conductor up at the south end of Gumm Siding and be on their way to Rainelle. After negotiating Hagan’s Switchback, the train tied down in Glidden Siding and was loaded at Creech the next morning. Veteran conductor Jeff Sullivan throws a wave.
The CSX heritage units have caused quite a splash since their unveiling a few months ago. While I definitely agree the units would look better with a full paint scheme, it is still a treat to catch them. Yesterday, word came down that CSX 1982 - The Seaboard System unit would be leading I037 on home rails, I figured I would drag the flashes out & get a shot. Created in 1982 with the merger of the Seaboard Coast Line and the Louisville & Nashville railroads, the Seaboard System was the first step to combine all of the company’s heritage railroads into one. It's seen here, passing through downtown Matthews, NC with the aforementioned I037.
CSX M410-30 brings CSXT F40PH-2s 1 and 2 across CP Hack in Jersey City, NJ with a sizeable train in tow. Unknown where and why they are up this way (supposedly bound for Pan Am), but was neat to see.

In what is probably the most photographed train on the east coast of 2021, Q410-14 pulls through Philadelphia, PA on the Pennsy High Line with ES44AH 911 and 3194 leading. All three units (911/3194/1776) were taken out of storage and placed onto Q410 as a rust busting run.
CSX's Conrail Heritage ES44AH-1976 is on the point of W/B train M-421 (Selkirk, NY to Rocky Mount, NC). Here, crossing West Bel Air Avenue, on CSX's Philly Sub.
I'm not a fan of taking photos from the side of a freeway, much less from a narrow interchange ramp between two freeways. But, the opportunity for a photo I've wanted for ages presented itself and I stopped, bailed out, got the shot, and quickly merged back into traffic. No harm done, and I achieved my goal! Yay. Union Pacific's MSCWC manifest freight begins it's long journey to SoCal, departing Salt Lake City at Grant Tower the afternoon of Jan. 21, 2018.
