An eastbound Union Pacific coal train more than fills Big 10 Curve between Eisele (formerly Clay) and Rocky, Colorado, on a warm Valentines Day 2015. A pair of GE ES44ACs are on the head end (UP No. 7701 and BNSF No. 6345, while a mid-train DPU of three more locomotives can be seen on the tangent on the other side of Big 10 Curve.
"The" Prairie Line MP15DC #1001 and crew work to extract a specific five CREX ES44ACs from a long line of the stored locomotives parked in TRRA's Miller yard near the St. Louis waterfront. Ultimately, some 75 of the units will be patched for CN and put into service, currently in the 3900 series, after servicing and repairs at MEI's Arsenal Street shops.
Just after changing crews on the wye at Fort Steele, British Columbia, a Canadian Pacific unit potash train curves on the main line toward Crowsnest Pass on the morning of October 11, 2017. A pair of Union Pacific GE ES44ACs bracket CP and CEFX AC4400CWs as power for the eastbound train. In the background, the wayfreight and another potash train sit in the small yard at Fort Steele, with the local waiting to go north on the Windermere Subdivision to Golden.
An eastbound Canadian Pacific freight passes through scenic Crowsnest Pass at Sentinel, Alberta, on October 10, 2017. That BNSF warbonnet splicing the two CP ES44ACs is a little out of place, eh?

A 79-car Union Pacific MRONY freight fills Big 10 Curve nicely approaching Rocky, Colorado, on Valentine’s Day 2015 afternoon. Seven locomotives are up front, beginning with EMD SD70ACe No. 8559, followed by a pair of GE AC4400CWs—Canadian Pacific No. 9576 and UP 7036. Next up are two General Electric “Tier 4 compliant” ES44ACs—GECX Nos. 2024 and 2023 in vibrant solid blue. Rounding out the consist are a pair of EMD SD70ACes—UP Nos. 8668 and 8362. Seventy-nine cars later and on the upper part of the curve is lone DPU GE ES44AC No. 5309 on the rear.

I'd shot here once before about seven years ago so figured I'd go high this time since I'd shot low back then. If you missed that shot if can be found here: flic.kr/p/2iCGB5Q
Northbound Florida East Coast Railway train 202 is rolling off the last couple dozen miles of their fast 350 mile overnight run from Hialaeah Yard in Miami to Bowden Yard in Jacksonville. They are crossing the calm waters of the San Sebastian River just north of MP 37 on the Flagler Subdivision in this view looking from parallel US Route 1, North Ponce de Leon Blvd.
Saint Augustine is the historic headquarters city of the road dating from 1885 when Henry Flagler established his offices in the city, some 10 years before the FEC name came into existence. The road built three office towers in the 1920s about 500 ft behind where I'm standing that served as the railroads headquarters until 2006 when they were donated to Flagler College and the railroad relocated its leadership and administration to Jacksonville.
The train is led by LNG powered GE ES44ACs 809 and 806 built in Nov. 2014 and spliced by their custom LNG fuel tank car. Originally diesel powered the entire GE fleet has been retrofitted to run on LNG as detailed in this article: files.chartindustries.com/FEC-LNG-FloridaEastCoastRailway...

"The" Prairie Line (TPLX) SW1500 #1002 shoves a line of 25 CREX ES44ACs into storage at the former Manufacturers Railway River Yard in St. Louis, MO. The move is the third of four to relocate approximately 100 of these units off BNSF, illustrative of changing power requirements on railroads across the country in the face of economic pressures and changes in operating philosophies (aka PSR, TOP21, etc.).
Union Pacific's Missouri-Kansas-Texas Heritage SD70ACe leads a pair of motley GE ES44ACs through the Weber River Valley near Morgan, Utah the evening of May 15, 2020.
Grand Rapids-Toledo freight Q334, normally nocturnal during this time period, splits the intermediates at Haddix Rd in Lake Odessa. The reason for the delay was due to the freight getting a knuckle late the night before, and the recrew had just finished reassembling the train to continue east. A pair of visiting CP ES44ACs add a splash of color to the wintry landscape.
Once built as a GP30 for the Great Northern in 1963, now in its then predecessor, Burlington Northern “Cascade Green” paint and now rebuilt into modern modifications by BNSF as a “GP39E”. BNSF 2740 leads westbound train CHIGAL (Hodgkins, IL - Galesburg, IL) with an H1 GP60B, an H4 SD60M and 2 ES44ACs trailing, as they race over the Des Plaines River in Lemont, IL during the last golden rays of the evening on the BNSF Chillicothe Sub. Well now...this was a COOL surprise to see come up on the NSINTW earlier in the day! Seven brand new ES44ACs found their way up here, with 'Tren Maya' on the long hood, and TMY reporting marks. Anyone know where these are heading to? They're showroom fresh; no MU cables are even attached yet!
Remnants left behind from winter storms several days prior melts back into the earth as a Sunday extra Silvis to Bureau Junction turn scoots by at 40 per past the bins at Mineral over ex-Route Rock rails, heading back west toward home underneath the bluest of February skies. Recently plucked from their spot out of the railroad's line of lifeless storage equipment, half of Iowa Interstate's rostered, six-axle SD38-2s begin to get their wheels back under them again, tag teaming this short, nine-car train consisting of a singular buffer and eight loaded potash hoppers for Geneseo's River Valley Co-Op facilty. The eastbound leg of their trip was a tad more beefy for these two with the addition of a couple DIT Geeps and a healthy block of chemical traffic for the plants Henry, set-out out there at Bureau for the week's BUSW to handle. Since the addition of three, new General Electric ES44ACs to the property back in early 2020, these aging EMDs have been cycled in and out of storage ever since, only coming out to play to help combat seasonal rushes in traffic.
Credit to Bill's truck for the help in elevation here.
A pair of ES44ACs in a 1+1 arrangement (the remote can be seen above the headend autorack) lead 369's freight through the S-curve at Newtonville.
A pair of former CITI Rail ES44ACs lead North Bay to Toronto train no. 450 over the Siding Lake causeway on a gorgeous late-summer evening in the heart of Ontario’s cottage country. I’ve always been fond of the paint scheme on these locomotives, particularly for their attention-grabbing nose stripes and the variety they brought to CN’s otherwise ubiquitous-looking fleet during this era. After all, this was the period before the attractive rebuilds rolled out, but after the majority of second-generation diesels were purged from the active roster. So, you can imagine my excitement when I had the chance to catch up to this train after work and follow them south in perfect evening light. Shortly after parting ways with 450 here at Martins, I met up with a good friend (and local photographer) for a pint and catch-up at one of Huntsville's craft breweries, marking my first time back in Ontario since moving west. All in all, it was one of those wonderful summer evenings in the north country that I’ve come to cherish over the years.
Restored Nickel Plate 2-8-4 number 765 was blasting eastward through Union Furnace on the Middle Division with Norfolk Southern's Pennsylvania Railroad and Conrail Heritage ES44ACs in tow.
NS ran a series of steam-powered trips on the former Conrail/Penn Central/Pennsylvania main line during the Memorial Day weekend in 2013.
It was a fun-filled and busy weekend that probably will never happen again.
On sunny Sunday afternoon, three GE ES44ACs climb the ridge between Caliente and tunnel 1 with an eastbound stack headed for Willow Springs, Illinois.
A pair of ES44ACs from the former Kansas City Southern fleet lead northbound CPKC manifest train M263 through the rolling hills of eastern Oklahoma near the community of Baron on a cool Saturday, June 17th, 2023 morning. As the sun is just coming over the horizon in front of the train, a bit of fog hangs in the valley behind over Baron Fork - a tributary of the Illinois River.
A pair of ES44ACs are snaking their way into Bluefield yard on the western end of the Christiansburg District with westbound 217. The train will pause briefly in the yard before continuing up the Pocahontas towards Ohio and eventually Chicago
A Terminal job comes off the High Line and down the UP back track at St. Louis, MO with 8 more CREX ES44ACs. These units were reportedly being stored at Larry's Truck and Electric in Ohio, and will be set up by MEI for CN.
A waiting Prairie Line crew will take these units from TRRA at Miller yard and pull them into the former Manufacturers Railway River yard.
Thanks to MM for the loco info.
MLW M420R 802 was built in 1975 for Providence and Worcester as their 2005. It migrated to the Iowa Interstate and became IAIS 802.
It was tied down in Iowa City in 1996 in the days before the fleet of GE ES44ACs. It now works for the Southern Railroad Company of New Jersey.
Like most fans, I typically detest locomotives running long hood forward on any pike that is not the original Southern or early Norfolk Southern. In this case, I'll make an exception.
With the recent arrival of new ES44ACs #517, 518, and 519 on the property, Iowa Interstate's fleet of SD38-2s is reportedly being prepared for long-term storage at Silvis, IL. Thus, I felt compelled to try for some last shots of these beloved units before ETTS.
In this case, SD38-2 #152 and ES44AC #510 head (or tail?) across Government Bridge at Rock Island, IL with hoppers from Canadian Pacific's B71, gathered from the CP interchange in Davenport, IA. To the left, the ice-swollen Mississippi river. The train will tie up at the IAIS yard in Silvis.
Given the circumstances, the large expanse of 152's yellow safety-striping is enough for me to declare this photo "acceptable".
Union Pacific MRONY (Roper Yard to North Yard, Denver manifest) freight nicely fills Big 10 Curve approaching Rocky, Colorado, on a beautiful Valentine’s Day 2015 afternoon. Seventy-nine cars later and on the upper part of the curve is lone DPU GE ES44AC No. 5309 on the rear. This view of Big 10 Curve is from the southwest, and winter lighting is best for this slightly different angle—but the hike in and up is more pleasurable in mild weather!

A trio of BNSF ES44ACs, led by 25th Anniversary 'stickers' 5869, labor up the 1% grade that will soon be achieved inside Tunnel 43. Known over the years as Flowery Lake Tunnel and later Hogan Tunnel, #43 sits atop Western Pacific's crossing of Nevada's Pequop range. On the drawbar is a load of black diamonds for the Nevada Energy power plant at Valmy, Nevada.

In this post I told the story of my first visit to Blue Island and the crazy variety show of trains.
Here is the sixth one I listed and the second best catch after the UP 1988. A pair of Iowa Interstate GE ES44ACs thump across the CN diamonds after crossing the bridge across the Calumet Sag Channel on Indiana Harbor Belt Main 1 at MP 15.2. I'm not sure where this train was headed or what it's symbol was but it appeared to be almost all empty ethanol tanks presumably headed back to Iowa via the old Rock Island Line.

Norfolk Southern RR ES44ACs 8103 & 8100 (N&W and Nickel Plate Road Heritage units) shove eastbound coal train #762 on the Pocahontas District at Switchback, WV on May 17, 2015.
February, 2013:
A pair of battle-weary UP SD9043MACs rumble into River Forest with an eastbound mixed freight. UP was taking delivery of ES44ACs at the time, and several MACs were renumbered into the 3000s, including the trailer, #3519 (formerly #8064).
UP still had around 300 90MACs in service back then and they were not an uncommon sight on the old Northwestern routes. A few months later, several MACs were discovered with cracked frames, and the fleet was sidelined. Both MACs were ultimately sold to Norfolk Southern and rebuilt at Juniata.
BNSF ES44ACs 5750 & 6126 lead loaded coal train CBTMMHS-023 (Black Thunder Mine, WY to the NS at Memphis, TN) down the St. Joseph Sub at Rushville, MO on July 9, 2024.

BNSF E-RTRATM0-64A carefully negotiates the downhill twists and turns of Crawford Hill behind a pair of ES44ACs in full dynamics. In about 10 miles, the train will have made it down to the base of the hill in Crawford, Nebraska for the rest of their run on the BNSF Butte Sub to Edgemont, South Dakota, and eventually Antelope Mine in the Powder River Basin of Wyoming.
