Another from earlier in the year of this treat.

Some 43 years after rolling off the erecting floor at LaGrange CSXT still places enough faith in this EMD veteran to call her to lead their hottest train over one of the east's toughest mountain railroads. For reasons unknown daily Syracuse to Worcester hotshot intermodal train I022 was capped with SD40-2 8006 (blt. Mar. 1979 for the Louisville and Nashville with the same number and delivered in Family Lines livery) at Selkirk after being stolen from the local pool.

Alas I couldn't make anywhere out on the line for a shot once I heard but did capture her arriving and spotting up her train at their destination in the Worcester intermodal yard. She sure looked right at home with the two big GEVOs (ES44AC-Hs 768 blt. Dec. 2007 and 3164 blt. Dec. 2013) as they drift back light to tie up after spotting up two tracks of hot UPS loads and other containers for unloading here at the busy ramp.

Quite the surprise on the old Boston and Albany and though I wish I could have gotten more I'm happy with these scene despite the in and out clouds. In the background rises the modest skyline of New England's second largest city and sharp eyes will note the flags flying atop with rebuilt towers on the splendidly restored Worcester Union station that was originally constructed in 1912 to serve trains of the New Haven and Boston and Maine along with those of its builder the B&A.

Still Getting It Done!

After shooting M436 at 83 I watched them start their set out then headed to this favorite spot. But it was just a bit to early for them and the tracks weren't quite in full sun at train time. So I hung out having heard the NC dispatcher talking about morning regular I022 still out west. By the time they arrived about 90 min behind M436 the scene was just about perfect.

Here is daily Syracuse to Worcester premium intermodal train I022 crossing the Quaboag River at about MP 75.5 on CSXT's Boston Subdivision. It was nice that they were running with two units on the head end which I find more photogenic instead of the seemingly normal 1x1.Here are CSXT 910 and 3064 both GE ES44AC-Hs blt. Jul. 2008 and Jun. 2012 respectively.

Thanks to a new family of beavers that built a lodge right on the shore a couple years ago there are a lot less trees and brush and the scene is nicely opened up and has been kept clear by the industrious rodents. In fact there were several fresh trails up the hillside to where they have been cutting and for the first time I saw one here this morning that slapped at me before diving beneath the water out of sight! If you look at the left side of the frame a bit below center and left of the two trees you can see the lodge which seems to grow larger each time I visit.

The ancient twin stone arch bridge dates from the line's construction in 1839 as the Western Railroad, that when completed in 1842 formed the longest and most expensive railroad constructed in the United States up to that point. The Western merged with two other predecessors to form the Boston and Albany Railroad in 1870. Thirty years later the B&A was leased by the New York Central Railroad, and then the line would pass successively to the Penn Central in 1968, Conrail in 1976 and CSXT in 1999. To this day it remains as the preeminent freight route and the only Class 1 trunk line still serving New England...truly a testament to the forethought of those who laid out and built the line over 180 years ago.

I shot this 11 photo sequence on February 10, 2013. Up front was CSX 3060 and 879 with CSX 927 as the DPU on the rear. All three units were ES44AC-Hs.

The first three photos were taken looking across the North Toe River east of Toecane, NC. The remaining eight photos were taken along the North Toe River at Spruce Pine, NC.
