Painted buntings are divided into an eastern and a western population. The eastern population lives only in the coastal regions of northern Florida up to North Carolina. The population in the west ranges from Louisiana and Texas up to Kansas and winters mainly in Mexico and southwards to Panama, while those from the east winter in southern Florida, the Florida Keys being one of these locations, and occasionally in Cuba and the Bahamas. The western population breeds in a habitat consisting of partially open areas with scattered brush, shrubbery and riparian thickets. The eastern birds choose scrub communities and the edges of maritime hammocks. The winter habitats are similar to each other, being tropical savanna and tropical forest margins.

Painted buntings are one of the most spectacularly colored and visually impressive birds in the United States and are the only U.S. bird with a blue head along with red underparts.

The French word ‘nonpareil’, is used for this species. It means “without equal,” and refers to the bird’s splendid plumage.

I found this one along with five others including males and females in my backyard. They have spent the Winter with me in Polk County, Florida, over the last several years.

They left again a few days ago. Hope they have a safe trip home and look forward to their return next year.

Being different shouldn't be treated as something wrong or bad. Nor should we be afraid of it. It's not a decease or a fault. It's natural. We 're all different in so many ways, yet we are all humans, right? And in what a contradiction this leads us to...

Yet being different is not wrong. It can be a good thing like a trait of a leader for example. Or it can be an embracing to change. It can signal a transition. Like the first yellow leaf among its green siblings in the end of a summer, signals Autumn's impending arrival. A change of season. A transition or a transitional period.

Same can be said for us. We are born as babies and become children. Then we stop being children and become teens. And later on we grow to adults. Those are transitions and most often than not, signs are there. You can see it happen if you know what to look for. Like that first yellow leaf I was talking about before. Yet we all were babies and then children and then teens and then adults right? So in a way we are all the same...? And again, how is that for a contradiction? But if we focus on contradiction, we are missing the point. We are missing the transition, the change that will happen with or without our acknowledgement anyway.

We are missing life on the making. Cause in the end of the day, being different is part of life itself. And life never asks for our permission or acceptance. It just... happens. Like John Lennon said once, “Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans”. So, if by now you are thinking, how can we be the same yet different from each other and what life, leaves or Lennon have to do with it, I wouldn't blame you. Most probably, I'm to blame, confusing you with words. But here's the thing. There is one big (and I mean really big), small distinction that may help you understand where I'm going with this.

There is Same and then there is Similar and there is Equal. Same is not Similar nor Equal. There is no difference in Same. It cannot exist in that realm. Never could or ever will. If it could, then Same would not be, by definition. But there can be a great deal of difference in Similar and Equal. That's the key. No one can be different if we are all the same. But we are not the same. No one is the exact same like someone else. Similar maybe, but not Same. But all else aside, we all are born as equals. And that's why we can be different from each other.
