Val Canali (Dolomites) 20241102
Val Canali acts as the southern access to the Pale di San Martino Mountain Range and is considered one of the most stunning valleys in the Alps.
The road that takes visitors to the mouth of the valley is highly evocative, winding its way beneath the ruins of the ancient Castel Petra. Main features of this extraordinary landscape are the meadows of Piereni, located on the western slope of the valley at more than 1,200 m above sea level. The leading economic activities in the area continue to be farming and sheep breeding.
As evening falls, Cima Canali turns into a kaleidoscope of greys and rust-red stripes, while the remains of Castel Pietra keep watch over the entire valley. Built in the 13th century, the fort has survived through wars, revolutions and sieges. Its striking atmosphere makes it a very popular tourist attraction.
An ideal place for rest and regeneration, Val Canali is an enchanting corner to visit throughout the year, with accommodation and restaurant facilities that offer unforgettable sensory experiences immersed in nature. In this photo, we can see the ruins of the castle of the walled city of Calatañazor, in the province of Soria, autonomous region of Castile and León, Spain.
Located in the westernmost part of this walled city, the castle was the penultimate defensive stronghold.
The tower seen almost in the center of the photo was the last stronghold of the entire defensive system, where the last survivors of a possible offensive attack would take refuge.
It is called the "keep tower."
Weapons, supplies, and water were stored in this tower to survive a possible siege.
The water was stored in a cistern located at the bottom of the tower, which has a huge opening in that area due to the ruins of the tower walls.
Halfway up the tower, the access door to the tower can be seen. It is not a window: it is the only access door.
The access door was placed at that height to make it difficult to access the tower in the event of an attack.
Under "normal" circumstances, this access door to the tower was reached by a wooden staircase.
In the event of an attack, this staircase was destroyed by the defenders themselves, making access much more difficult.
At the top of the tower, it is clearly visible that it has been rebuilt with reinforced concrete, so that tourists can climb up and enjoy beautiful views of the entire valley, known as the "Valley of Blood," where the battle in which the Caliph's leader Almanzor was mortally wounded "supposedly" took place. But that belongs to legend.
RUINAS DEL CASTILLO DE CALATAÑAZOR, 2025
En esta foto podemos ver las ruinas del castillo de la ciudad amurallada del Calatañazor, provincia de Soria, región autónoma de Castilla y León, España.
Situado en la parte más occidental de esta ciudad amurallada, el castillo era el penúltimo reducto defensivo.
La torre que se ve casi en el centro de la foto era el último reducto de todo el sistema defensivo, dónde se refugiaban los últimos supervivientes de un supuesto ataque ofensivo.
Se le llama "torre del homenaje".
En esta torre se acumulaba armamento, víveres y agua, para poder sobrevivir a un posible asedio.
El agua se acumulaba en un algibe situado en la parte inferior de la torre, que se ve una enorme abertura en esa zona, debido a la ruina de los muros de la torre.
A mitad de altura de esa torre se ve la puerta de acceso a dicha torre. No es una ventana: es la única puerta de acceso.
La puerta de acceso se colocaba a esa altura para dificultar el acceso a la torre, en caso de un ataque.
En una situación "normal" se llegaba a esa puerta de acceso a la torre mediante una escalera de madera.
En caso de ataque, esa escalera era destruida por los propios defensores, con lo que el acceso era mucho más complicado.
En la parte superior de la torre se ve claramente que se ha hecho una reconstrucción con hormigón armado, para que los turistas podamos subir y disfrutar de unas vistas muy bellas de todo el valle, llamado "valle de sangre", donde "supuestamente" se celebró la batalla donde cayó herido de muerte el caudillo califal Almanzor. Pero eso pertenece a la leyenda.
The entire time we were at Kohler Andrae State Park during our hike, there were cormorants migrating north along Lake Michigan. They use the lake as a migration highway and we would see a few of them here and there, then long streams of them. They were quite the site!
I got out of my car early enough to see the entire sky filled with high level streaking clouds and stars peeking through well before the sun started to rise. The whole hike into the foothills the color just started building in this spectacular way...a strange but amazing atmosphere that slowly creeps in indicating you've made a great decision. It wasn't until a little under an hour before sunrise I was able to capture this scene luckily with a few stars remaining. Unfortunately there was an approaching storm that moved too fast and cut the light right before things really exploded :(

January has been a very busy month for me, and surprisingly I almost made it through the entire month without shooting a moving train! Of course, it doesn't help that Pan Am Southern's Freight Main--which I currently live only five minutes from--is mostly nocturnal, and even if it wasn't the choice is usually a parade of NS widecabs or patched ex-CSX C40-8s. However, when a friend of mine alerted me to the fact that rebuilt CP SD70ACU #7012 in CP heritage paint was leading today's CP 252 down the CP D&H, a quick check of Google Maps reminded me that I'm just a little over 30 minutes from Fort Edward. Having a well-timed prep-from-home day for work, I figured I could take a little time off and do a "one and done." I arrived at Fort Edward station to see nothing around, and just as I finished checking to see that Amtrak 69, "The Adirondack," would be arriving from the south in 15 minutes, I heard an EOT chirp. A quick check of the tracks and there was 252 in the hole! I quickly relocated to Rogers Island since the light was still good for the bridge over the Hudson River. Amtrak passed northbound, and shortly after 252 could be heard throttling up and then blowing for the crossing. One last quick check of my settings and framing, and 252 quickly entered into view. Not bad for my first moving train this month!

This is the second photo from the Rolling Hills location in Moravia, Czech Republic.
At the same time, this is my absolute favorite photo from the entire tour. If I had returned home after three days with just this photo, I would have been completely satisfied (of course I'm still happy that that's not the case).
This picture shows a slightly wider view of the hills behind the line of trees. Because of this, and because of the more intense "light and shadow play", it has a completely different dynamic than the version I showed you last week.
My wish as a photographer is to create at least one photo every month, which I really like. With this photo here, I have definitely achieved this target for April.

Dies ist das zweite Foto von der Location "Rollende Hügel" in Mähren in der Tschechischen Republik.
Gleichzeitig ist dies mein absolutes Lieblingsbild von der gesamten Tour. Währe ich nach drei Tagen nur mit diesem Foto zurück nach Hause gekommen, wäre ich voll zufrieden gewesen (ich freue mich natürlich trotzdem, dass dem nicht so ist).
Dieses Bild zeigt einen etwas weiteren Blick auf die Hügel hinter der Baumreihe. Dadurch, und wegen der intensiveren "Licht und Schatten Spiele" hat es eine völlig andere Dynamik als die Version, die ich Euch letzte Woche gezeigt habe.
Mein Wunsch als Fotograf ist es jeden Monat mindestens ein Foto hinzubekommen, was mir richtig gut gefällt. Mit dieser Aufnahme hier, habe ich dieses Soll für den April in jedem Fall geschafft.

Zinfandel by Robert Mondavi winery, Woodbridge, 13,5%
This Zinfandel by Robert Mondavi winery is absolutely gorgeous! At a temperature of 20 degrees, the wine is “drinkable”, with very soft tannins, a slight flavor of currants and other dark berries. The acidity is minimal, the wine is light and goes well with boiled meat. For its almost budget price of 500 hryvnia, the wine is beyond praise. I regret that I only bought two bottles at the time.
The color is red with a ruby tint. The aroma has tones of red fruits and spices. Cherry and spices are felt in the taste. The aftertaste is long and velvety, with a pleasant tartness of ripe bird cherry berries.
It is dry with very small acidity, medium body, medium alcohol, it is well-balanced and had a moderate length finish.
Nowadays, Napa Valley has become a US wine legend. Clay soils and an excellent drainage system allow for the creation of some of the most interesting and profound wines in the world. It was the wines from Napa Valley that once glorified the Mondavi company and Robert Mondavi himself.

Кислотність мінімальна, вино легке та відмінно поєднується з відвареним м'ясом. За свою, майже бюджетну ціну в 500 гривень, вино вище за всілякі похвали. Шкода, що свого часу купив тільки дві пляшки.
Колір червоний із рубіновим відтінком. Аромат має тони червоних фруктів і спецій. У смаку відчувається смородина, вишня та прянощі. Післясмак тривалий і бархатистий, приємна терпкість стиглих ягід черемхи.
Нині Napa Valley перетворилася на виноробну легенду США. Глинисті ґрунти та чудова дренажна система дозволяють створювати тут одні з найцікавіших та найглибших вин світу. Саме вина з Napa Valley уславили свого часу компанію Mondavi та самого Роберта Мондаві.

The vertical lines on the wings of this species are an example of a disruptive pattern that helps keep the butterfly safe from birds. The only species in it’s entire genus, the Banded Orange Butterfly has several nicknames such as the Orange Tiger and Banded Orange Heliconian. Banded Orange Butterflies have been spotted in the wild sipping the tears of crocodiles for their salt.

With the entire train now clear of Voltz, the hogger for NS train D70 skins 'er back as he gets the train up to track speed on Main Track 2 of the joint BNSF Brookfield Sub - NS Kansas City District at Birmingham.
D70 was a local that delivered autoracks from NS's Voltz Yard to BNSF's Argentine Yard, and it frequently sported some interesting power, typically BNSF yard power off of transfers that would deliver to NS's Avondale Yard the previous night. This day was no exception, as this consist includes a Heritage I SD40-2, a Warbonnet B40-8W, a Cascade Green GP30 carbody and a Heritage IV GP39-3. D70 was abolished in the summer of 2019 as PSR took over the NS, and not single one of these motors are working around Kansas City, either. 1/6/18.
Great Skuas (aka Bonxies) are a scarce seabird from the north that feeds almost entirely by mugging other seabirds for their food. Being large birds (1.5kg) they specialise in mugging large birds, particularly Gannets. But Gannets are Britain's biggest seabird weighing 3kg; twice as much as a Bonxie, so they really do punch above their weight. Skuas are closely related to gulls but differ in their bill structure. In summer a lid develops from the base of the bill covering the nostrils. In fact, the old name Pomatorhine for Pomarine Skua translates from Greek as lidded nose and if you look carefully you can see this feature. But it is a feature of all Skua species, not just Pomarine.
In Britain Bonxies breed mainly in the Scottish islands and I photographed this one perched on the turf roof of an old building on St Kilda, 40 miles west of the Outer Hebrides.
In the prehistoric era, the entire Sedona area was covered by a sea of water and the red rock buttes we see today were once sandbars and islands protruding up from bottom of the sea. Over millions of years, the sea receded and layered sediment from volcanic activity was formed. Wind and water erosion created these astoundingly beautiful natural sculptured wonders that are composed of basalt,sandstone and limestone. Ferrous oxide was blended with the sandstone which gives the red rocks their distinctive and brilliant crimson red color.

Cormorants were once entirely coastal in habits but we have seen an increasing trend for inland breeding, a behaviour first documented here in the 1950s.
Our population is made up of birds from two different races, one of which – the continental race – is responsible for the colonisation of inland waterbodies. Cormorants make use of regular roosting sites, with some individuals remarkably faithful to these over time.
The expansion inland has brought the Cormorant into conflict with commercial fisheries and anglers, and the presence of these birds has not been welcomed by all.
My entire walk to and fro took 20 minutes but I was so glad that I did go out for that brisk walk, it was 6 C but felt like 1 C

As the sun was setting, the Owls discovered the advancing snake. They hovered over, and then posted guard. shockingly, the snake reacted by coiling up and covering its head: according to the locals, the Owl wedging a few ounces was a greater threat to the large Anaconda than the snake was to it when the dual was in the open. The owl would attack the head repeatedly until the snake injuries would be irreversible. To protect it the snake was returned to the pond.
if the snake can get to the burrow undetected, the odds are now in its favor.

Early start and a ride down to the other local woods that border the Manchester Ship Canal on one side and industrial units on the other.
Not been here for a while and the intention was to fly the drone.
When I arrived this oil tanker, The Thun London was in view by a place called Mount Manisty which is the slag heap from the original canal cutting. A quick change of plans and this is the resulting shot.
After it had passed I still had enough time to fly the drone and checked the drone assist app. The area is in a Controlled Traffic Region ( CTR, ) and I couldn't remember if you are allowed to fly in a CTR so decided against it and made the mile or so ride home.
As it happens you can fly in a CTR. I also checked this ship and it was outbound for Amsterdam, which then got me checking oil pipelines, which then had me checking the entire European pipelines from Russia and Azerbaijan across Poland, The Czech Republic and Germany into Holland. I also checked the draught of this ship ( 6.5m ) and the depth of the canal at this point is 28 feet. So it's clearance from the bottom of the canal is only about the height of an average bloke. I then discovered the MSC is tidal up to Latchford near Warrington and ships of this size can only use the canal for a few hours either side of high tide.
All of which is fascinating to a pedant like me but probably inherently boring to most. And all of which I'd forgot and had to go trawling the internet to find the info out again before posting.
It's a long day when you take your exercise so early but worth it in the end.

Jedným z pravidelných nákladných vlakov medzi Košicami a Zvolenom je relačný vlak Pn 61312, jazdiaci v pondelky, stredy a v piatky a relačný vlak Pn 61310, jazdiaci v utorky a štvrtky. Tieto vlaky jazdia obvykle v ranných, resp. doobedných
hodinách, pričom z Lučenca odchádzajú okolo obeda a do Zvolena sa tak dostávajú krátko poobede. Pn 61312 sa obyčajne zvykne omeškať, a to z dôvodu meškania obratového Mn 83361 z Rimavskej Soboty do Jesenského.
V Jesenskom sa koná preprah medzi rušňami 751/752 z depa Plešivec a rušňami 746 z depa Zvolen, pracoviska Lučenec. Na fotke je zachytený zmeškaný Pn 61312 vedený dvojicou 746tiek z depa Zvolen a postrkovými 756tkami z rovnakého depa,
tesne po prechode výhybňou Pstruša. V pozadí je vidieť kameňolom, ktorý zásoboval lomovým kameňom výstavbu rýchlostnej cesty R2, vedúcej zo Zvolenskej Slatiny po Kriváň.
Takmer celú záťaž vlaku, až na prvý vozeň ložený drevom, ktorý smeroval do Rakúska, tvoria vozne naložené antracitom pre spoločnosť VUM sídliacu v Žiari nad Hronom v areáli hlinikárne Slovalco.
Odberateľ, spoločnosť VUM, je slovenská spoločnosť zaoberajúca sa výrobou a predajom uhlíkových výrobkov na báze antracitu, smolného koksu, petrolkoksu a iných. Antracit firma
nakupovala v dobe vyhotovenia fotky až z ďalekého Ruska, konkrétne z Novosibirskej oblasti. Zásielky pochádzali zo stanice Linevo, približne 70 kilometrov južne od tretieho najväčšieho mesta Ruska - Novosibirsk.
Týmto zásielkam trvalo približne 30 dní kým sa z východzej stanice v Rusku dostali až do cieľovej stanice sa Slovensku, samozrejme v rátane prekládky zo širokého rozchodu na európsky
v Čiernej nad Tisou. Nanešťastie po vojenskej invázii Ruska na Ukrajinu tieto prepravy úplne ustali a boli nahradené antracitom, pochádzajúcim pravdepodobne zo Českej Republiky.

One of the regular freight trains between Košice and Zvolen is train Pn 61312, running on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and train Pn 61310, running on Tuesdays and Thursdays. These trains usually run in the morning or after lunch
hours, leaving Lučenec around lunchtime and arriving in Zvolen shortly after noon. Pn 61312 is sometimes delayed, due to the delay of turnaround Mn 83361 from Rimavská Sobota to Jesenské.

Almost the entire load of the train, except for the first wagon loaded with wood, which was headed to Austria, consists of wagons loaded with anthracite for the VUM company located in Žiar nad Hronom in the area of the Slovalco aluminum smelter.
The customer, the company VUM, is a Slovak company engaged in the production and sale of carbon products based on anthracite, pitch coke, petroleum coke and others. Company was buying anthracite
at the time the photo was taken, from as far away as Russia, specifically from the Novosibirsk region. The shipments came from the Linevo station, approximately 70 kilometers south of Russia's third largest city - Novosibirsk.
These shipments took approximately 30 days to reach the destination station in Slovakia from the departure station in Russia, of course including transload from wide, Easter European gauge to European gauge
in Čierna nad Tisou. Unfortunately, after Russia's military invasion of Ukraine, these shipments stopped completely and were replaced by anthracite, probably coming from the Czech Republic.

The entire consist of SBVR-4, including the manned helpers on the rear, can be seen as the train approaches the Northwestern Turnpike.
We found this tree on the Coosa Backcountry Trail this past Sunday. It was perched on top of a large boulder with its roots growing entirely in the cracks. It seems to be thriving despite having almost no soil.
An entire year has passed since the last day of service on EXO's electrified Deux-Montagnes Sub. Since then all the tracks and infrastructure have been torn up as work continues on the controversial REM light rail project, which is only set to be in service here during Q4 2024 (!).
Here, on a cold but intermittently sunny morning, EXO 936 is passing the siding at MP 16.9 of the Deux-Montagnes Sub during the final morning rush hour for this line.

This Indian Blanket bloom is almost entirely red. This variation does occur from time to time in east Texas. This bloom was one of several of this color under the Brazos River Bridge on Highway 290 in Washington County Texas. La réserve naturelle domaniale d'Orti est localisée en Ardenne centrale, dans la vallée du ruisseau de Laval, à proximité de sa confluence avec l'Ourthe occidentale, au sud du village de Lavacherie, sur le territoire communal de Sainte-Ode. L'essentiel de ses quelque 6,5 hectares est occupé par une mosaïque de mégaphorbiaies et de prairies humides acidophiles à reine des prés (Filipendula ulmaria), jonc à tépales aigus (Juncus acutiflorus), comaret (Comarum palustre), succise des prés (Succisa pratensis), bistorte (Persicaria bistorta), valériane officinale (Valeriana officinalis), lysimaque commune (Lysimachia vulgaris) et bien d'autres plantes encore. Des massifs arbustifs se sont progressivement installés suite à l'abandon du site comme pré de fauche. Il s'agit souvent de saussaies marécageuses à saule à oreillettes (Salix aurita) là où le sol est le plus gorgé d'eau. A d'autres endroits, une jeune forêt feuillue évolue librement, notamment sous l'aspect d'une aulnaie-frênaie le long du cours d'eau. Un étang mésotrophe complète la palette d'habitats présents sur cette belle zone humide. Ce fond de vallée est fréquenté par une faune particulièrement remarquable, assez comparable à ce qu'on observe dans les autres sites encore bien préservés de la région. Une autre zone protégée, la ZHIB d'Orti, s'étale sur près de 4 ha juste à l'est, sur la rive opposée du ruisseau de Laval. Cette réserve domaniale est inscrite en presque totalité au réseau Natura 2000 dans le site BE34031 "Bassin moyen de l'Ourthe occidentale". Elle est aussi entièrement englobée dans les limites du Parc Naturel des Deux Ourthes.
The national nature reserve of Orti is located in the central Ardennes, in the valley of the Laval stream, near its confluence with the western Ourthe, south of the village of Lavacherie, in the municipal territory of Sainte-Ode. Most of its approximately 6.5 hectares is occupied by a mosaic of megaphorbiaia and acidophilous wet meadows with meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria), sharp-tepaled rush (Juncus acutiflorus), comaret (Comarum palustre), meadow succise ( Succisa pratensis), bistort (Persicaria bistorta), valerian (Valeriana officinalis), common loosestrife (Lysimachia vulgaris) and many other plants. Shrub beds have gradually settled in following the abandonment of the site as a mowing meadow. It is often swamp sassai with auricle willow (Salix aurita) where the soil is most waterlogged. In other places, a young deciduous forest evolves freely, notably in the aspect of an alder-ash forest along the watercourse. A mesotrophic pond completes the range of habitats present in this beautiful wetland. This valley bottom is frequented by a particularly remarkable fauna, quite comparable to what can be observed in the other still well-preserved sites in the region. Another protected area, the ZHIB d'Orti, extends over almost 4 ha just to the east, on the opposite bank of the Laval stream. This state reserve is almost entirely included in the Natura 2000 network in the BE34031 site "Middle basin of the western Ourthe". It is also entirely encompassed within the limits of the Deux Ourthes Natural Park.
Many entire civilizations have arisen and fallen while this tree grew, prospered, and then faded, and we, the current brief occupants of this world, bicker about what a politician said today (forgotten tomorrow), and toss around terms like civil war because we cannot tolerate a politician of the opposite party for 4 years. Our foresight and patience are some of the things that are even shorter than our lives. It’s so easy for short lived creatures like ourselves to totally lose perspective. Until about 120 years ago West Looe and East Looe were entirely separate towns, sitting opposite each other across the Looe River. While East Looe is by far the larger of the two and has the main shopping street as well as a beautiful sandy beach, West Looe has a charm all of its own. Its centre is at the bottom of West Looe Hill with the 14th century Church of St Nicholas on the quayside. It is the oldest building in Looe.
The church was endowed on 11 July 1336. During Cromwell's time the church became the Guildhall for West Looe, but was restored for public worship on the accession of King Charles II. This was short-lived, and later it reverted to be the Guildhall and prison until 1852 when it was once again restored for public worship.
The boats by the quay run a ferry service across the river to East Looe when the tide allows. The price is just one pound - a bargain. It saves having to walk along the river to the bridge.

For entirely non-train reasons I found myself at Cherrywood West on the first day of 2025. Turned on the scanner just in time to hear H19 call the approach to Cherrywood. It was a pleasant surprise - though not entirely unexpected - to see a pair of veteran SD60's come around the bend a few moments later. Some last minute adjustments to my camera settings (mostly) saved the day as the sun kept peeking in and out from behind the clouds.
Cormorants were once entirely coastal in their habits, but there has been an increasing trend for inland breeding, a behaviour first documented in the 1950s.
The UK population is made up of birds from two different races, one of which – the continental race – is responsible for the colonisation of inland waterbodies. Cormorants make use of regular roosting sites, with some individuals remarkably faithful to these over time. (BTO).

I've been after this car for years, but circumstances have made it difficult in the past. Not entirely sure how this is still going, but it looked mysteriously clean given how old it is.
One of the downsides to these car parks running centrally down roads is those barriers either side, basically reducing the chance of any frontal shots to zero.
Tilt happened entirely by accident and only because I quicksaved when using an old CE table, then found I couldn't do anything but watch the image tilt and zoom away when it loaded, so why not try to use it for interesting effect.

My entire summer has passed by without seeing a single "clearwing" moth such as a Hummingbird Clearwing or Snowberry Clearwing. But recently I did manage to spot this White-lined Sphinx Moth coming to a native Field Thistle flower. These larger day-flying moths are often referred to as "hummingbird moths" because they fly in the same way, moving their wings in a figure-8 pattern allowing them to hover in one place. Even so, at each family reunion they were both alone to walk at sunset, but today it was not going to be like that, Drago had just been discovered leaving the house by her husband and they were both fighting with fangs, claws and flapping wings while she cried in the gardens thinking that Drago had finally abandoned her for not choosing him. She knew it was what she deserved, but she was so wrong...
