These pretty little butterflies are easy to spot as the males’ wings have bright orange tips – giving them their name! They are a common sight during spring and can be found in lots of places including meadows, woodland and hedges. The adults lay their eggs on special plants to ensure that their caterpillars have the right food to eat. Orange-tip caterpillars love garlic mustard, cuckooflower and hedge mustard plants.
The male orange-tip is unmistakeable: a white butterfly, half of its forewing is a bold orange, and it has light grey wingtips. The female is also white, but has grey-black wingtips, similar to the white butterflies. Both sexes show a mottled, 'mossy grey' pattern on the underside of their hindwings when at rest.
Dunnock - Prunella Modularis
aka Hedge Sparrow
The dunnock (Prunella modularis) is a small passerine, or perching bird, found throughout temperate Europe and into Asia. Dunnocks have also been successfully introduced into New Zealand. It is by far the most widespread member of the accentor family, which otherwise consists of mountain species. Other common names of the dunnock include the hedge accentor, hedge sparrow, or hedge warbler.
Dunnocks are native to large areas of Eurasia, inhabiting much of Europe including Lebanon, northern Iran, and the Caucasus. They are the only commonly found accentor in lowland areas, all the others inhabit upland areas
Dunnocks were successfully introduced into New Zealand during the 19th century, and are now widely distributed around the country and some offshore islands. Favourite habitats include woodlands, shrubs, gardens, and hedgerows where they typically feed on the ground often seeking out detritivores as food.
The dunnock possesses variable mating systems. Females are often polyandrous, breeding with two or more males at once, which is quite rare among birds. This multiple mating system leads to the development of sperm competition amongst the male suitors. DNA fingerprinting has shown that chicks within a brood often have different fathers, depending on the success of the males at monopolising the female.Males try to ensure their paternity by pecking at the cloaca of the female to stimulate ejection of rival males' sperm. Dunnocks take just one-tenth of a second to copulate and can mate more than 100 times a day. Males provide parental care in proportion to their mating success, so two males and a female can commonly be seen provisioning nestlings at one nest.

Brunnby Church lies in the countryside to the north of Höganäs. It is one of the most popular churches for weddings in the region. The church was built of granite at the turn of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. The exterior is whitewashed. It is the interior that provides the main attraction, however. Fifteenth century frescoes cover the walls, ensuring that there are more saints watching over you here than in any other church in Skåne.

"Port Moody has one of the few remaining large mudflats in Burrard Inlet. It is an environmentally sensitive area that is home to many nesting shoreline species such as purple martins, osprey, and great blue heron. The mudflats are home to a biodiverse community of fish, shellfish, and other significant tidal species that are sensitive to disturbance. The city’s trail system, including wooden boardwalks that wrap the head of the inlet, is designed so visitors can experience and enjoy the wildlife that live there, while staying off the mudflats. Residents and visitors can stay out of danger, and ensure this special place remains for future generations, by remaining on the designated trails and keeping dogs on a leash."
Nothing makes it feel more like the holidays are truly here than getting the chance to spend time with the friends we love. So you can just imagine my delight when Pengy and Pengu arrived for a Christmas visit with me and Corgsz! Happy twirlszzz! It was a joyful afternoon, filled will laughter and fun!
Little Pengy is so thoughtful, and brought me such lovely gifts! He knows I’m a Georgia Peach, and a mad crazy football fan, so he gifted me the most amazing peach cocktail set, I’m in love with it! And as if that wasn’t incredible enough, he also gave me a magical, good luck football themed handbag that would help ensure wins for my Bulldogs! He also insisted on modeling it for me, and put it around his neck as soon as I opened it! That little rascal!
Pengy loves his snacks, so I gave him a deluxe French fry vending machine, so he can always have hot fries on hand, and I balanced that with some healthier homemade soup and a set of penguin themed mugs...he loves to drink hot chocolate, so that’s what he and Corgsz sipped while Pengu and I indulged in delish peach cocktails! And like all kiddos, lil Pengy likes things that twinkle, so Corgsz chose to gift his friend a light up bunny!
We all had such a lovely day, and our favorite little penguin shows us with each stop on his friendship holiday tour that what matters most in life is our connections to those we hold dear. Thank you my dear Pengu and Pengy, for the treasured gift of friendship, all year through. And for including me in your beautiful, heartwarming holiday series. Love to you both, and to beautiful Andie girl....happiest of holidays to you all!
Wishing everyone a wonderful, magical week! 💕🎄🐇🐧🍑🍷🍟🏈🐶💕
In Casa Mila, the two atriums ensure ample lighting in all areas on all floors. Structurally, are key as supporting elements of interior facades. In the courtyards, there are traditional elliptical beams and girders, but Gaudí applied an ingenious solution of using two concentric cylindrical beams with stretched radial beams, like the spokes of a bicycle. They form a point outside of the beam to two points above and below, making the function of the central girder a keystone and working in tension and compression simultaneously. This supported structure is about 3,60 meters (12 feet) in diameter and is considered "the soul of the building" with a clear resemblance to Gothic crypts.

A new version of yellow daffodil for the "one-of-a-kind" flower images project.
Did you know...
If you present someone with a single daffodil, legend has it bad luck may be on the horizon. Instead, deliver a whole bunch of them: a gift of several daffodils is believed to ensure happiness to the recipient. But that’s no surprise to us! It seems impossible not to feel just a little bit of joy at the sight of them.
Daffodil bulbs contain a compound called narciclasine. Scientists have discovered this substance may actually be effective in treating brain cancer!

For more than a century, beginning in 1855, the North Point Lighthouse stood tall, overlooking the water and beaming out its light to protect and guide ships and watercraft. Keepers and their families lived and worked at the North Point Light Station, ensuring that the bright light was broadcast through fair weather and foul. It symbolizes a time in our history when waterways were the highways between cities. Lighthouses facilitated water travel and commerce on Lake Michigan, throughout the Great Lakes and beyond.
It has recently been restored to its early 20th century charm through the determined efforts of a group of committed volunteers.

Snow Bunting - Plectrophenax Nivalis
Snow buntings are large buntings, with striking 'snowy' plumages. Males in summer have all white heads and underparts contrasting with a black mantle and wing tips. Females are a more mottled above. In autumn and winter birds develop a sandy/buff wash to their plumage and males have more mottled upperparts.
Globally, they breed around the arctic from Scandinavia to Alaska, Canada and Greenland and migrate south in winter. They are a scarce breeding species in the UK, in Scotland, making them an Amber List species. They are more widespread in winter in the north and east when residents are joined by continental birds.
They are listed under Schedule 1 of the Wildlife & Countryside Act.
The snow bunting lives in very high latitudes in the Arctic tundra. There is no apparent limit to its northern range, while the southern range is limited by the duration of daylight, which influences their reproductive activity. This species is found in the high Arctic tundra of North America, Ellesmere Island, Iceland, higher mountains of Scotland, Norway, Russia, North Greenland, Siberia, Novaya Zemlya, and Franz Josef Land. During the winter, this bird migrates to the circumglobal northern temperate zone including the south of Canada, north of the United States, north of Germany, Poland, Ukraine, and east to central Asia. During the last ice age, the snow bunting was widespread throughout continental Europe.
During the breeding period the snow bunting looks for rocky habitats in the Arctic Since the vegetation in the tundra is low growing, this bird and its nestlings are exposed to predators, and in order to ensure the survival of its offspring, the snow bunting nests in cavities in order to protect the nestlings from any threat. During this period, buntings also look for a habitat rich in vegetation such as wet sedge meadows and areas rich in dryas and lichens. In the winter, they look for open habitats such as farms and fields where they feed on seeds in the ground.

Like an Admiral inspecting his fleet to ensure everything is shipshape, mum is likewise giving her chicks a good looking over . . . . .maybe their rich aunt is coming for a visit 😊.
I spent over an hour photographing these coots and watching mum and dad foraging for food. Every now and again dad would wander off, either up or down the river attending to perimeter defence.
It was fun watching the two chicks walking quickly across the lily pads to get to the food and each chick has a dot of white near the tip of their beak.

The Grote Kerk in Dordrecht is a fantastic find for anyone who is interested in religious buildings or medieval architecture. Alternatively known as Dordrecht Minster, the Great Church or the Church of Our Lady, this establishment is the largest church in the city. This church was ranked amongst the top 100 Dutch heritage sites on a list which was created by the department of Conservation in the early 1990s. It is noted for its Brabant Gothic style and its unfinished church tower.
The original plan was to construct an octagonal tower which would be over one hundred meters highs, however half way through the construction, it was noticed that the tower had begun to develop a significant lean. Like the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the ground below the tower was too soft to support such a heavy structure, and the tower had begun to tilt. Because of the dangerous incline, the tower was never finished. During the 20th century, restoration work took place on the tower to ensure that the structure would remain safe for visitors. Despite the fact that it remained unfinished, the tower was still the tallest structure in Dordrecht for almost 500 years.
Kilchurn Castle Loch AweHistory
Campbell land
Sir Colin Campbell, 1st Lord of Glenorchy, built Kilchurn Castle at the head of Loch Awe in the mid-1400s. Colin’s father Duncan Campbell, later 1st Lord Campbell, had offered him the land to ensure his loyalty following the sudden death of his elder brother Gillespec.
Colin’s descendants, the Campbells of Glenorchy, were the most powerful junior branch of Clan Campbell, and Kilchurn remained their power base for around 150 years. The Glenorchy Campbells at times nearly rivalled even the Clan Campbell’s chiefs, the earls of Argyll, for supremacy.
Lochside powerbase
The castle’s existence is noted in a charter dated March 1449, entitled ‘apud Castrum de Glenurquhay’ (at the Castle of Glenurquhay). It originally consisted of the courtyard and the five-storey tower house, containing a hall, private chambers, a cellar and a prison. Colin’s son Duncan, the 2nd Lord, added the laich hall in the courtyard before his death at the Battle of Flodden in 1513.
Colin, the 6th Lord, added the four angle-turrets on the top of the tower house. He was also responsible for relocating the Campbells of Glenorchy from Kilchurn to their new home of Balloch, now Taymouth, in Perthshire before his death in 1583.
Garrison stronghold
Kilchurn found a new role in 1689. In that year Sir John Campbell of Glenorchy, 1st Earl of Breadalbane, retired to his ancestral seat and set about converting it into a garrison stronghold.
The tower house was converted into accommodation for officers, while a barracks housing 200 men was built on the north side of the courtyard. The barracks block remains relatively complete, and is today the oldest surviving barracks on the British mainland.
The garrison stronghold saw little use, other than as an outpost for government soldiers during the Jacobite risings of 1715 and 1745. The castle was eventually abandoned later that century.

Boxford Roman mosaic is a mosaic at Boxford near Newbury, West Berkshire, England, rediscovered during an archaeological dig in August 2017. It dates from the Roman period. The 4th century (AD) mosaic is over 6 metres long. Its central panel is thought to show Bellerophon, at the court of either Iobates or Proteus, battling Chimera.
Anthony Beeson, an expert on Roman mosaics, said it is "without question the most exciting mosaic discovery made in Britain in the last 50 years and must take a premier place amongst those Romano-British works of art that have come down to modern Britons".
The mosaic was uncovered during a community archaeology project, investigating three Roman sites near to the village of Boxford, which was led by the Boxford History Project, the Berkshire Archaeology Research Group and Cotswold Archaeology, which began in 2011. Earlier in 2017, a villa "of modest size" was unearthed at Boxford. The mosaic was found at the southern end of this building. Only one half of the mosaic was uncovered. It was subsequently reburied, to ensure its preservation.
Further archaeology was undertaken in 2019 and an open day for the public occurred on Saturday 31st August 2019,
It will be covered again to preserve it for posterity.
Most flowers are designed to attract the pollinating insects needed to ensure the next generation. It’s easy in admiring their beauty to forget that it is what all about. But then I can’t help but marvel that creation made them so diverse and beautiful and attractive to the eye (and camera).
This is a humble dog rose that lurked in the hedgerow by one of the lanes here. Originally I set out to process it for the Macro Wednesday submission, but then I noticed it had a rather offputting green fringe on the yellow stamens. In any case, I had run out of time so it was reinvented for the Donnerstagsmonocrom group today.
I liked the crinkled petals and the detail in the stamens and style, so I set out to emphasise those in the processing. I also used the lighting filter to give it some directional lighting from above… just because I could ;)
Thank you for taking the time to look. I hope you enjoy the image. Happy Monochrome Thursday :)
Cologne’s extensive public transport network ensures convenient and fast travel around the town. The Kölner Verkehrs-Betriebe (KVB) local transport company moves daily around 800,000 people with almost 60 lines, a good 380 trams and 320 buses. Most local train stations are linked to tram stops and are equipped with live departure boards.
Almost all KVB trams and buses are provided with ticket machines. You can pay with coins or “Geldkarte” money card/e-purse. Besides, tickets are available at ticket machines next to public transport stops and at any KVB travel desk.

SR-71A #61-7972 is on display at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, VA. From 1991 until September 2003, #972 was in storage at Washington Dulles International Airport in a building specifically constructed for this aircraft. There, it was under strict surveillance by National Air and Space Museum representatives, who regularly adjusted humidity levels to ensure the best possible preservation conditions. This aircraft is no doubt the best-looking of the remaining SR-71s, along with SR-71A #976.
This aircraft holds many records that were set on 6 March 1990, when it was flown from Palmdale to Dulles in what was intended to be the last USAF flight of the SR-71. It also holds the New York to London record of 1 hour, 54 minutes, 56.4 seconds set in 1974. You may have noted the Skunk Works insignia on the rudders of #972. After SR-71A #955's last flight on 24 January 1985, #972 became the Palmdale test aircraft. This aircraft's assembly started 13 December 1965 and was rolled out on 15 September 1966.

I am back to photographing this Amaryllis again. There is still one bud to open, so it will last for awhile longer. I've had such fun with this Amaryllis. This is the third stalk of flowers it has graced me with. I'm planning to take extra good care of it to ensure that it will bloom next year as well.

No body, no crime.
The bits of viscera that fall away due to his messy eating fall into the water, drawing in several fish that happily swallow down his crumbs.
Taking the bodies, he finally descends into the depths. His magic is released, a sudden pulse that pings out to the dangers that lurk in the deep.
It’s not long before there’s an answer to his call.
Within a matter of minutes, the monster is surrounded by a group of Short fin Mako Sharks, circling, curious. Magic amplifies his thoughts, his will. For a moment their silence leaves him hanging, believing they do not wish to share his meal.
Sharks do not consider humans as part of their diet. At least there is no record of it. Whenever an attack happens it’s mainly due to other reasons.
Yet, this type of shark is known to devour their own siblings.
Survival of the fittest.
They shoot forward with incredible speed, their mouths eagerly tearing into the bodies he’s provided. His own maw parts, reflecting those around him before another bit of flesh is torn off and swallowed.

Unless we step into the uncharted territory of the gender revolution, we know exactly where we will be regressing. An all-powerful State that infantilises us, interferes in all our decisions for our own good and—under the pretext of protecting us—keeps us in a childish state of ignorance, fear of punishment and exclusion. The special treatment until now reserved for women, with shame as the primary tool for ensuring their isolation, passivity and lack of protest, could now be extended to all. To understand the mechanics of how women have been made to feel inferior, and induced to willingly maintain themselves in this state, is to understand how the entire population is kept under control. Capitalism is an egalitarian religion, in the sense that it demands general submission, making everyone feel trapped—as all women are.
