Das Eden Project entstand nach einer Idee des englischen Archäologen und Gartenliebhabers Tim Smit in einer stillgelegten Kaolingrube nahe St Austell. Von der Idee im Jahr 1995 bis zur Eröffnung der Anlage am 17. März 2001 dauerte es sechs Jahre. Charakterisiert wird der Garten durch die zwei riesigen Gewächshäuser, die aus jeweils vier miteinander verschnittenen geodätischen Kuppeln in der Bauweise von Richard Buckminster Fuller bestehen. Hier werden verschiedene Vegetationszonen simuliert. Die Gewächshäuser des Eden Projects sind derzeit die größten der Welt.
Die Entwürfe für die geodätischen Kuppeln stammen vom britischen Architekturbüro Nicholas Grimshaw, die Tragwerksplanung von Anthony Hunt, ihre Ausführung erfolgte durch die Würzburger Firma Mero. Gedeckt sind die mehrfach miteinander verschnittenen Kuppeln mit doppelwandigen Kissen aus ETFE, einem besonders leichten, transparenten Kunststoff. Die Folienkissen wurden in eine Konstruktion aus standardisierten, sechs- und fünfeckigen Stahlrohrrahmenelementen (Raumfachwerk) eingepasst. Die Raumfachwerkkonstruktionen überdecken stützenfrei eine Fläche von insgesamt 23.000 m² (Oberfläche etwa 30.000 m²) und haben eine Höhe von bis zu 50 m bei einem Durchmesser von bis zu 125 m.

The project was conceived by Tim Smit and designed by architect Nicholas Grimshaw and engineering firm Anthony Hunt and Associates (now part of Sinclair Knight Merz). Davis Langdon carried out the project management, Sir Robert McAlpine and Alfred McAlpine[4] did the construction, MERO designed and built the biomes, and Arup was the services engineer, economic consultant, environmental engineer and transportation engineer. Land use consultants led the masterplan and landscape design. The project took 2½ years to construct and opened to the public on 17 March 2001.
The Tropical Biome, covers 1.56 ha (3.9 acres) and measures 55 m (180 ft) high, 100 m (328 ft) wide, and 200 m (656 ft) long. It is used for tropical plants, such as fruiting banana plants, coffee, rubber and giant bamboo, and is kept at a tropical temperature and moisture level.
The Tropical Biome
The Mediterranean Biome covers 0.654 ha (1.6 acres) and measures 35 m (115 ft) high, 65 m (213 ft) wide, and 135 m (443 ft) long. It houses familiar warm temperate and arid plants such as olives and grape vines and various sculptures.
The Outdoor Gardens represent the temperate regions of the world with plants such as tea, lavender, hops, hemp and sunflowers, as well as local plant species.
The covered biomes are constructed from a tubular steel (hex-tri-hex) with mostly hexagonal external cladding panels made from the thermoplastic ETFE. Glass was avoided due to its weight and potential dangers. The cladding panels themselves are created from several layers of thin UV-transparent ETFE film, which are sealed around their perimeter and inflated to create a large cushion. The resulting cushion acts as a thermal blanket to the structure. The ETFE material is resistant to most stains, which simply wash off in the rain. If required, cleaning can be performed by abseilers. Although the ETFE is susceptible to punctures, these can be easily fixed with ETFE tape. The structure is completely self-supporting, with no internal supports, and takes the form of a geodesic structure. The panels vary in size up to 9 m (29.5 ft) across, with the largest at the top of the structure.
The ETFE technology was supplied and installed by the firm Vector Foiltec, which is also responsible for ongoing maintenance of the cladding. The steel spaceframe and cladding package (with Vector Foiltec as ETFE subcontractor) was designed, supplied and installed by MERO (UK) PLC, who also jointly developed the overall scheme geometry with the architect, Nicholas Grimshaw & Partners.

My first ride in the cab of a steam locomotive. The engineer was kinda young. Niles Canyon Railway near Sunol, California.
"On June 7th, 1942, Japanese forces seized the small island of Attu from the United States. The following year, an invasion was launched to wrestle the Aleutian Islands chain from back Japan. A few weeks into the battle, Japanese forces unexpectedly launched a massive assault on the American lines at night, creating a rapid breakthrough. Sweeping over the front lines and through the rear aid stations, they killed the wounded who lay in their tents. Hundreds of Japanese continued to push the Americans back, right up to a hill that contained the base camp for some rear echelon troops, most engineers and cooks. As front line soldiers retreated from the pursuing enemy, the engineers and cooks stood their ground, repelling the Japanese banzai attack. By the end of the day, most of the Japanese garrison on Attu had been annihilated."
I've always wanted to do something to honor the (arguably) most forgotten campaign in WWII, so I decided to whip this little scene together. I posted a picture of the diorama as well, so you can view it as just a build. Hope you like it!

Brittle stars, an alternate common name is the 'serpent stars', are a species-rich class of echinoderms with outstanding regenerative abilities. Living under rocks or in crevices with only the tips of the arms exposed, they are known to be seafloor ecosystem engineers. They reshape the seafloor sediment surface and influence the distribution of other seafloor species. They also provide nutrition to fish, sea stars and crab predators.
Their presence in a sediment sample is one indicator of a healthy benthic community. They embody nature's fragility and resilience.

Warmest day so far this year presented a CSX “Powder” Mac in front of a manifest down the former EJ&E. Real friendly crew, called in like 4 people.
As Johnny Cash once said about his younger years "You know, for some reason, it was awfully important to me that I when I waved at the engineer, he waved back at me"
Likewise, every since first visiting America, I've also done that and most times, when you can actually see into the cab, the engineer does indeed wave back. Although you can't see it in this photo, he opened the side window and gave a friendly wave. Once the train had passed I had a big smile on my face.
Sign on the roof of Treg Trailers, a local engineering workshop and showroom for household domestic trailers and custom built trailers. The sign on the roof is accompanied by a life-sized red trailer.
The title refers to the only engineer's name that I automatically recall from a classic Dr Who episode. Unfortunately Engineer Eckersley was a bad 'un, in league other bad 'uns to steal the valuable mining deposits.

This shot isn't anything special given that its just a light unit sitting in the shade. But the location is just so cool that I used my wide angle to just capture the whole scene. This lone YN2 AC4400CW is the local power for Selkirk based B765, the Hudson Grain train here on the old Boston and Albany Hudson and Chatham branch now known as CSXT's Claverack Industrial Track.
In addition to the famous two blocks of street running the train also amazingly cuts right through the middle of the town square park. Sharp eyes will note the Hannukah Menorah lit up for the season, and of course just out of frame at left is a Christmas tree too. The crew had paused for a while by the old depot (and soon to be brewery) then pulled across the crossing and stopped right here in the center of town for another break. The conductor kept the locomotive company while the engineer walked to grab a coffee then chatted it up with a local lady and her dog and even loaded a baby up on the engine for some photos. It was all quite amusing and charming in a strange old fashioned railroading kind of way....I suppose it is that whole juxtaposition of time and place contrasting with the norm of modern railroading that makes this job so appealing to watch. I don't know...forgive my rambled musings...this place is just simply too cool to resist, and it continuely calls me back!

Engineer Pitbladdo and Conductor Campanini take a Pocono run east out of Scranton on a chilly winter morning, with an excellent leader.
An epic trip - 6-hours, 30-miles from Ouray to Lake City, Colorado - with rough rocky patches, switchbacks, shelf roads, and sweeping vistas all the way, reaching almost 13,000 feet at the summit. A Jeep Badge of Honor trail for good reason.
From TrailsOffroad.com: In the late 1800’s, miners started digging for gold, silver, lead and other ore in the San Juan Mountains. They needed a way to get people and the ore out to the nearby towns. Those roads left by the long-abandoned mines are now some of the most famous off-road trails in the books. Engineer Pass, a 30-mile trail, is one of them and is part of a trail now known as the Alpine Loop.
There are multiple mine ruins to view and explore the grounds of along the way including the Hard Tack Mine and the Michael Breen Mine.
Mile after mile provides new and more amazing views of Colorado and the San Juan mountains. Oh Point and the official summit have breath-taking panoramas of the mountains.
This trail goes well above the timberline at just over 12,900’. With the altitude comes stunning views of the mountains to the north including the Uncompahgre, Coxcomb, Wetterhorn and Wildhorse mountain peaks. The view is so expansive at Oh Point that on a very clear day, you might be able to see all the way to Utah if you turn your eyes to the west.
In the early 1800's, many thoughtful Americans believed that isolation and the difficulties of communication would force the Mississippi Valley settlements to form a separate nation. Hoping to hold the frontier, Congress, in 1800, established a post route from Nashville (TN) to Natchez (MS). The Trace, then a series of Indian Trails, had drawn from the Secretary of State the bitter comment, "The passage of mail from Natchez is as tedious as from Europe when westerly winds prevail." To speed the mail, President Jefferson ordered the army to clear out the trail and make it a road. Postriders, carrying letters, dispatches, and newspaper helped bind the vast turbulent frontier to the republic. However, their day passed by the mid-1830's when steamboats, running from New Orleans to Pittsburg, robbed the Trace of its usefulness as a main post route.
The pathway shown above is a section of the original Old Natchez Trace near Eupora, Mississippi (before the road) that you can walk on as it winds back and forth across the newer Natchez Trace Road. Some sections are fairly flat adjacent to the nearby roadway and others are deeper, worn out paths that are usually referred to as the 'Sunken Trace'.

1940s (?) Keuffel & Esser (K&E) 4080-3 Log Log Duplex Trig slide rule. Before small, affordable electronic scientific calculators became popular in the 1970s, the slide rule was the workhorse of engineers and scientists everywhere.
For this picture, I set the cursor to the 2.25 mark on the A scale. The cursor position corresponds to 1.5 on the D scale, which equals the square root of 2.25. 1.5 is also the cube root of 3.375, the location of the cursor on the K scale.

Sometimes my mind goes blank when it comes to titles. This title is referring to a review of the lens I was using for this photo. In this review they call this Leica Elmarit 60 mm f2.8 lens for a soulful engineer. I think it is quite fitting to this photo which I actually think have some soul to it. What do you think?

Utah Railway engineer Stu Turner commands the controls of the RUT311 local as it rumbles into North Salt Lake, Utah, on May 15, 2012. Stu was one of the kindest railroaders I've ever met, offering a friendly wave or a trackside chat. He was tragically taken from us in July 2020 due to brain cancer.
