Elle a été capitale du Gujarat au XV èmle siècle sous le Sultan Mahmud Begada mais en 1535, l'empereur moghol Humayun prit la ville et transfera la capitale à Ahmedabad. La ville déclina ensuite et était en partie envahie par la végétation quand les britanniques arrivèrent au début du XIX ème siècle.
Jami Masjid est la mosquée la plus importante de Champaner et une des plus belles du Gujarat. Elle date de 1508-1509.
