With diesel exhaust billowing skyward, Kansas City Southern SD70ACe 4112 pours on the power as it shoves hard up a short but stubborn grade on CPKC’s undulating Pecten Subdivision. The unit is helping guide train no. 606 — a set of sulphur empties from Vancouver bound for Pecten — through the golden farmland of southern Alberta on a crisp autumn afternoon near Pincher Creek.
NMWA under new ownership CSX approaching Snakeroot rd in Pittsfield. Pulling a good size train of 52x0. Power was 305-316-310. With an early departure from NMJ I was able to chase them the whole way. A pace shot of the CP 6255 as it leads a 686 east into St. Charles, MN. The recent fall harvest made for a nearly unobstructed view of the power in near perfect morning light. Thanks to Jason Rathbun (driver) for the pace shot opportunity. This train put a great end to a great Train Fest weekend.
A thunderhead begins to take shape on a hot summer evening as the M-HURC awaits its chance to continue the journey west.

At dusk, and at a less than invigorating pace, the M-HURC crawls west through the scenic plains of South Dakota. It's shots like this that make a trip.

Building speed as it heads west out of Floodwood the Rapids local brings its train past a tad of fall color. Nice to see a pair of veteran EMD's still working hard on a Class I railroad.
Quite possibly the two friendliest railroaders I've ever met. With a combined 75+ years experience on the railroad dating back to the days of the CNW, engineer Thom S. and conductor Steve K. are seen here providing roll by to an opposing CP 198. As soon as the 198 clears, UP LTA-42 will briefly wait for the signal and soon be rolling east once again.

Quietly resting at one of the facilities that gets serviced by the Minnesota Southern the MSWY 1379 (EMD GP7) basks under the stars in downtown Luverne.
GWU 009 and ALF 19 were seen working GWA's Intermodal Super-Freighter, 7AD1 through Dry Creek, an industrial Northern suburb of Adelaide, to begin their almost 3000 km journey north to the tropical location of Darwin, NT, aka the Top End on Saturday 2nd of July 2016.
With imposing skies in the background, we were most fortunate for the sun behind us to reappear just in time for the train to pass.
A trio of EMD's take the H19 up river at track speed. Not long from here the train will be taking the siding at Homer and waiting for traffic.

For a few minutes the quaint ghost town of Owanka, SD's silence is broken as a train rumbles east through town. Here the cement extra Out of Rapid City is seen heading east at nearly 40MPH. Not far east from here trains are forced to cut down to 10MPH. Beware of the hungry mosquitoes and horse flies!

Today I received word of the CSXT 4797 on westbound oil empties. After monitoring ATCS for a couple of hours I decided to go out and grab a shot on this great Sunday.
If you look down the rails (railroad east) you can see for many miles from here on the U.S. HWY 10 overpass between Perham and New York Mills, MN.

A cement extra jaunts east across the rolling prairies and through one of countless ranches that contribute to this part of South Dakota's landscape.
Heavy overcast skies along with what seemed to be perpetual rain showers and thunderstorms were difficult to avoid on our second full day of the trip.

Summer in the Bitteroots.__After receiving clearance from EAST PORTAL,in MONTANA Extra 20 east with SD45 #14 climbs the canyon along the north fork of the St. Joe River just east of AVERY. Working hard, the battle against the 1.7% is in full force at this point. It's mid-70s action in Northern Idaho on the ROCKY MT.Div.
Quite possibly one of my favorite shots of the day. Here the short limestone train is seen rounding the infamous curve near Spirit Mountain. We just got into position before the train came around the corner where we would snap shots with the dozen or so others that were already here waiting. I like how the sky looks in this one as well.
It was fitting to end the day on such a great note considering the weather conditions changed every 5-10 minutes with everything from snow, sleet, hail, rain and relentless wind. Next it would be on to Blackwoods Bar & Grill in Proctor where ten of us would grab an awesome meal and a couple 2-3+ beers before some headed off to the steam night photo shoot at the depot.
