Just seconds from sunset, Mass Coastal 2010 leads Cape Cod Central's Dinner Train at Monks Park in Pocasset, Bourne, MA. This was a real nail-biter, as the train was slowly making it's way down the Falmouth Line as I was watching the sun go down quickly. I would have preferred to have the sun a bit higher, but I shouldn't complain after all. With FL9 2011 out of service, it was a nice change to have a geep on one end of the train, just like the old days.
Burlington Northern’s intermodal train #4 is Chicago bound as it passes along the Mississippi River bluffs at La Crosse, WI. On the headend of the train is a pair of tiger striped GP50’s and a fuel tender. In the mid-1980’s, the innovative Burlington Northern developed a fleet of fuel tenders that were utilized primarily on long distant trains eliminating the need for in-route fueling.
Mass Coastal 2006, 2010, and 2008 lead the Energy Train southbound at the Wareham River in downtown Wareham, MA.
Wildfires in California have created a haze that's arrived Minnesota. This amplifies the colors of the trio of 4-axle geeps leading the way of this mixed freight minutes before sunset.
In vintage "good old days", GP50s and GP39s weren't as uncommon on road freights,at least, that I've seen in photos and videos I've been enjoying recently. Now, they are treats as GEs typically rule the day.
The lead unit is the only one of the trio not cursed with a PTC unibrow.

MC 2010, 2012, and LTEX 3815 switch out reefers at Maritime Terminal in New Bedford, MA. 3815 was added to the consist here and, to my dismay, was added on the other end of what could've been a desirable northbound chase.
Mass Coastal 2012 and 2010 leads MC-4 to New Bedford from Taunton, seen at Cotley Street in Berkley, MA. This area has seen a lot of improvement for South Coast Rail, and is almost unrecognizable in this 2019 photo at the same crossing: flic.kr/p/2f6xaD2
Amid howling winds of 40+ mph, a healthy St Cloud local of 41 cars rumbles through Big Lake headed for its namesake.
Even with the wind, the cold of winter (which returns the next day) felt like a memory with temperatures well into the 70s, great for March!

Mass Coastal MC-4 prepares to shove two reefers into Maritime Terminal in New Bedford, MA. MC 2012 and 2010 are working today's train out of Taunton. Seen in the background is LTEX 3815, which was kept in the yard in New Bedford and will be brought to Taunton on MC-4's return trip.
MC 2010 leads the dinner train southward to North Falmouth, seen here running along the Pocasset River in Pocasset, Bourne, MA just after sunset.
Still wearing Burlington Northern's cascade green paint, BNSF 3132 leads the Bayard local out of Aspinwall, Iowa. Doesn't get much more Midwestern than this!

After swapping crews, MC 2010 shoves a passenger train into Buzzards Bay station for a later dinner train, and MC 2014 is ready to head northbound to Rochester with 4 loaded trash hoppers. The scene here is at Taylor in Wareham, with the vertical-lift bridge in Buzzards Bay in the background.
Mass Coastal 2010 leads a passenger train northbound back to Buzzards Bay, passing alongside the canal at Sagamore.
Following the old IC branch west of Rantoul, IL, my friends and I were hoping to find the rare GP28 owned by the elevator here in Dewey. We were a bit surprised to see this ex CNW GP50 instead. The Co-Op still owns the GP28, which is parked in the barn with mechanical issues and from what we understand, is for sale.

The BNSF Local working the Grand Forks Subdivision, otherwise dubbed Cass Lake Local, makes a stop in Crookston to work at Crookston Bean and the Minnesota Northern yard. Here the three-man crew is about to back into the switch to Crookston Bean adjacent to MNNR Jct. MNNR Jct a connection off the mainline leading to the Minnesota Northern Yard and the Minnesota Northern's Ada ad P Line Subdivisions that go to Beltrami and Eldred, respectively.
Back in 1991, a Santa Fe stack train, powered by a GP50 and two new “Super Fleet” GP60B cabless locomotives, is nearing Galesburg, IL on its way to Chicago on the Transcon.
Now halfway between Aspinwall and Manilla, IA, BNSF's Bayard local rolls westbound over a small underpass with a BN green-painted GP50, 3132, in the lead.
In May of 1989 a Burlington Northern manifest freight is seen passing Lock and Dam 5A south of Fountain City, WI on its way to the Twin Cities. The power is a GP50 / B30-7AB combo. When the GP50 was delivered to the BN in 1985 its nose was in the high visibility orange and black stripe scheme, nick named the Tiger Stripe scheme. Evidently it was not visible enough as the BN has changed the stripes on the #3112 to orange and white making the unit unique. The experimental scheme was not adopted for the fleet.
High sun just swung around to allow partial light on westbound noses when a slow H-NTWGFD1-12A rumbles into Big Lake.
Despite 5 EMDs at their disposal, only the lead GP38s were under power, which made for a nice sound trackside as the geeps put their effort in heading west.
The Northstar Station was once my common fan spot, at that time, the station was all by itself, seemingly in the middle of no-where.
Today, it's almost hard to find the station with the huge housing boom in town with apartments filling up the area around the station.

In the crisp cold air, the brakeman on the "Buck Local" is about to enter the depot in Longmont, Colorado, where the conductor is also grabbing some paperwork before heading south to Boulder, on November 11, 2018.
After receiving word of H-GALNTW from the 10th having a trio of standard cab EMDs, I raced down the St Croix sub and chase it from Nelson, WI to St Paul Park, MN. Leading the charge was BNSF 3167, still in ATSF Paint

Operating on former Colorado & Southern Ry. trackage, (absorbed by the BN in 1981) the train curves to the east near a location formerly known as Burns Junction where the Denver & Interurban, an electric interurban line that once paralleled the C&S split off and continued west to the city of Boulder.
Mass Coastal 2010 leads a small freight northbound at Swamp in Myricks, Berkley, MA. The train is coming off the Fall River Subdivision and onto the New Bedford Sub. for the home stretch to Taunton.
A trio of 4-axles struggle under the Big Lake signal gantry enroute to Grand Forks. The train stopped just out of Northtown, then stopped again just out of Big Lake, a long trip indeed.
This is a conveinent spot, since most other spots were either poor light or still buried in snow. But, spring will come! (Eventually)

Ex-Norfolk Southern EMD GP38-2 No. 5565 and BNSF EMD GP50 No. 3160 lead the "Buck Local" up the 2-percent grade on Burkes Hill near Louisville, Colorado, on October 7, 2018.
The Cass Lake Local approaches the bridge spanning the Red Lake River in downtown Crookston. The bridge is the second bridge built by the Great Northern at this crossing. The first was constructed in 1892 while this one was built alongside to the east - hence the jog the track makes to to align itself for the crossing, visible where the train is located. The original concrete abutments still exist.
Surprisingly, this is not the easiest bridge to shoot. Lots of tree cover, the truss structure, access, and few trains make this a tough one. The Cass Lake Local is seemingly one of the only regular trains that runs through Crookston on a regular basis, and its schedule is less frequent with maybe two round trips a week over the Grand Forks Subdivision. Coal trains are highly irregular, the Grand Forks to Superior freights are rare, and the only other traffic is grain, or in the case of this last summer, CN trains running to bypass problem areas on their system. Ultimately, the BNSF operating this former GN mainline across northern Minnesota is just plain strange. It seems like it should be a busier railroad, but it just isn't.
Thanks for Bridgehunter.com for the bridge information and dates.
