A light emanating from the interior of a frosted glass display case hints at the silhouette of a legendary creature: the unicorn. The translucent surface blurs the reading of its realistic-looking forms. Both exposed and concealed, elusive and imprisoned, the ephemeral presence of the magical being exudes a certain magnetism. Undoubtedly, this symbol of purity and grace, which has captured the Western imagination for centuries, still exerts its powers of fascination. Captured: Carthage, IL.

Seen here is a shot of an incoming severe thunderstorm as it approached Carthage, IL overnight. I happened to be on the road before it moved in (fortunately with my camera gear in the car), and came across this RR crossing... I decided to grab a shot from this location, as the storm was still off in the distance. It featured a pretty spectacular light show, with bright flashes rapidly emanating from within the clouds.

I was actually hoping to capture some cloud to ground or cloud to cloud lightning bolts, but alas only these rapid flashes of light were to be seen.

Wishing all of you a successful, peaceful, prosperous, and healthy new year.

This is probably the most atypical vantage I’ve shared for a New Year’s image from Seattle. The original place I had in mind was in downtown Seattle, but the view of the Space Needle was obstructed by one of what seems like HUNDREDS of omnipresent construction cranes that dominate the entire region. It was the same view I captured for New Year’s 2012, and I was hoping to improve upon it.

Completely deterred, with 55 minutes until midnight, I contemplated a contingency plan. This led me on an impromptu voyage to Harbor Island, the largest manmade island in the United States, operated by the Port of Seattle.

The skyline is to the right of the Space Needle, but far enough in distance that including the skyline would have severely diminished the Space Needle, thus underwhelming the thrill of the fireworks display emanating from its structure.

What you’re viewing are the railways for transporting cargo in and out of the city, along with some warehouses, facing northwards at the outline of Queen Anne Hill, one of the city’s most popular neighborhoods, with the iconic Space Needle at its southern end.

I like the composition for this New Year’s photograph as it’s unusual and my first that does not incorporate downtown Seattle.

Due to a gap in the clouds to the west, the glow after sunset was quite surreal, giving my surroundings a light that seemed to emanate from within. I had already packed my bag and was heading back to the car when I noticed it.

A rather unusual underground collection box can be found on the market square in Bremen. When a coin is added, you hear one of the Bremen Town Musicians thanking you. The money goes to the Wilhelm Kaisen charity.

Make the Town Musicians sing!

The sounds of a crowing cock, a cat's miaow, a barking dog and the loud hee-haw of a donkey can be heard to emanate from the pavement right in front of the State Parliament.

Beauty cames from struggles, from falling over and over and over again and getting up again and again. It cames from roadblocks, figuring a way around them and working though them. It cames from being more brave than your fears. From heartbreaks and hundred of tears. True beauty is always the battles you have conquered. Perseverence, patience, determination, grit. And, of course, the beauty of being a genuinely compassionate human surpasses everything. There is nothing more truly gorgeous than a kind soul, wich makes an entire aura radiate.

This image was captured a few minutes before the conclusion of 2016, prior to Seattle's entry into the new year.

I posted an image of the 2017 fireworks display from this spot earlier in my photostream, but I dislike like that image immensely. Why? The reason is while I was trying to meticulously calculate and compose the image, another individual was engaged in conversation with me (a.k.a. she was talking at me), and I didn't want to be rude by cutting her off. It's amazing how engulfed people can be when talking about themselves, temporarily forgetting that it typically takes two to have a conversation.

Please don't misunderstand. I don't mind company when photographing, but if I cannot give my full attention to what I'm doing, the resulting image will reflect this, and I will become rather sullen, especially if the opportunity is a rare one.

As a result, I was unable to concentrate properly and produced some of the worst New Year's images I have ever created, in my own view. (I'm my own very worst critic, so I never go easy on my own work).

What does any of this have to do with ***this image***?

I think it's my saving grace. Knowing that fireworks typically generate smoke and spread visible fumes through the sky, I wanted to make sure I obtained a clear and pristine capture of the Seattle skyline before the firecrackers emanated from the Space Needle. The Needle is illuminated in pink because the fireworks show was sponsored by T-Mobile, and hot pink is the company's trademark color. It looks rather good on the Needle.

In essence, I think this image was my best capture from the event.

I had reminded myself that I would let half the year pass before sharing it here (to prevent what might look like repetition). Enjoy.

As I stood in front of the digital watercolor painting, I couldn't help but feel a sense of nostalgia wash over me. The scene depicted a picturesque street in Colmar, captured beautifully from one of my photographs. It was a charming street, lined with quaint restaurants that emanated the enticing aromas of exquisite French cuisine. The architectural marvels that surrounded me were a testament to the rich history of this enchanting town.

The delicate brushstrokes in varying shades of pastel hues captured the essence of the scene perfectly. The soft, translucent colors used in the painting mimicked the gentle touch of watercolors, creating an ethereal atmosphere. I felt as if I could almost hear the murmurs of conversations and the clinking of glasses, as locals and visitors alike savored the delectable dishes offered by the restaurants that adorned the street.

The buildings on either side of the street exuded an old-world charm, with their half-timbered facades adorned with colorful flowers cascading down window boxes. Each building seemed to have a story to tell, a testament to the architectural craftsmanship of the region. The roofs, with their steep angles and intricate details, showcased the attention to detail that went into their construction.

The cobblestone pavement beneath my virtual feet added to the authenticity of the scene. It appeared weathered and worn, having witnessed countless footsteps over the years. The uneven surface hinted at the passage of time and added to the overall charm of the street.

As I gazed at the painting, I could almost taste the exquisite French cuisine that awaited within those restaurants. The tantalizing scents of freshly baked baguettes, aromatic cheeses, and delicate pastries filled the air. It was a scene that encapsulated the allure of Colmar, a place where culinary delights merged seamlessly with architectural wonders.

In that moment, the digital watercolor painting transported me back to that picturesque street, allowing me to relive the beauty and charm of Colmar. It was a testament to the power of art, capturing not just the visual elements, but also the emotions and memories associated with a place.

It was within this room that my spirit was trapped when the ending swiftly came to my people. The waters became oddly still and quiet for a moment, one final gasp of peace and normalcy before the last, dreadful chapter of our corporeal existence began. My heart immediately dropped into the pit of my stomach upon hearing the most ominous, deep rumble emanating in the far-off distance. A terrible, pleading scream then rose up from across Atlantis and just like that all became nothingness. For a split second.

Clouded blue skies, form a horizon with a tapestry of autumn trees. From the center of a cord grass island and calm blue waters emanates a spiral of seabirds in flight.

Eyes that see everything, be it day or night. Eyes that fascinate me and that shine like no other. This long-eared owl is currently focusing on something that I cannot see and of course I cannot hear, because the hearing of this magnificent creature is even better than its eyes. The owl can hear a mouse walking under a blanket of snow. The long-eared owl therefore has much better equipped senses than we humans. I get so humble every time I think of such excellent qualities which animals like this wonderful creature have and are superior to us in so many ways.

How grateful I was - and still am - when I was able to spot this little twilight hunter - who can fly absolutely noiselessly - up in the woods on a hilly landscape near the eastern Swiss Alps.

Owls give me a feeling of security and wellbeing. I feel her grace and the peaceful expression that emanates from her.

I love animals and feel so close to them. I'm still curious like a child.

Before the flowers open completely, the stalks illuminated by the sun emit a glittering green color from the lavender pillow. Similar to the waves of the sea, the lavander pillows undulate under the influence of the mistral, strewed on their surfaces with fragile blue colored points which drown in or spring up from the bright green color emanating from their entrails.....

A very belated tribute to my long-lost father

I chose his ship as a header because it was his last resting place.

After the worst of the Blitz¹ came the Dreaded Telegram. Although

I can't remember my father, I do vividly remember being terrified

at seeing my mother break down in tears before even opening the message; "... missing presumed killed". It was everybody's worst nightmare. My father's ship, HMS Dunedin, had gone down² with most of her crew on the 24th November 1941.

                                   Exactly 80 years ago today

★  If you are wondering why I waited so long, please read on.

My mother had been devastated but had never given up hope that my father was still alive as a prisoner of war and that one day he would come back to us. My uncle, for his part, had never been satisfied with just a telegram and a simple citation (see below). He had never ceased to pester the Admiralty for more information till long after the war was over. But nothing was ever forthcoming. Both my mother and my uncle died long before the truth was out and I remained in the dark³, until...

In 2019 (only 2 years ago) I read a book called: BLOOD IN THE SEA - HMS DUNEDIN AND THE ENIGMA CODE: A must-read, written by Stuart Gill son of one of the very few survivors of the ill-fated ship.

As I read it, I discovered - to my horror - the tragic events that took place all those years ago. In my mind’s eye, I witnessed the tragedy as it unfolded. I came to know the various characters, their hopes and finally their despairs. I also discovered the extent to which the Enigma code was involved which no doubt explains why the Admiralty had remained silent for so long.

There was even a passage in the book about my father who was described as being brave and even jovial right up till the end despite the excruciating pain he must have been suffering from his wounds. He had been carried to a raft and died a few hours later. The passage ended with the touching words: "Poor Horace".

My father must also have known that he was about to die without ever seeing his loved ones again and knowing that they too were in the thick of it. I suddenly realised that I was one of his loved ones.

I had known my father but I'd been a toddler at the time too young to be able to remember him later; something I deeply regret. All I want to do now is wipe away the tears and keep his memory alive.

The cracking of the Enigma code at Bletchley Park in July 1941 was one of the closest guarded secrets of the Second World War. Indeed, the very fact was not made public till the 1970s and the full story till the 1990s but even then, I was unaware of any connection between the code and my father’s ship - until I read the book!

On the 15th June 1941, Dunedin captured the German tanker Lothringen along with vital Enigma material for Bletchley Park. A month later the Enigma code was cracked.

Four months later, Dunedin was directed to her doom by orders emanating from a decoded Enigma message. She had been sent to intercept another tanker before rendezvousing with four U-boats.

It was like throwing a cat into a lion’s den: A light cruiser was no match for a U-boat let alone four.

But Dunedin was the only ship within range and, of course, we were at war. It had been thought that Dunedin could intercept the tanker well before the rendezvous would take place; a high-risk gamble. But with the benefit of hindsight, it would seem that the U-boats were already deployed around the tanker to protect it and its precious cargo. This measure would probably have been standard procedure and therefore never mentioned in any message.

Tankers played a major role in the Battle of the Atlantic keeping the Wolfpack U-boats fully replenished at sea where they were required to remain for very long periods!

Although it all happened a long time ago, for me, reading the book and following up on the web has been like hearing the news of what happened yesterday. I was able to share some of the grief that my poor mother must have been overcome with at the time. She had spared me the pain that she had been suffering alone and in silence.

We had never talked about my father or the war after it was over; everybody had wanted to put it all behind them. It hadn’t been easy; loved ones lost forever, widows in black everywhere, the blind and the crippled walking the streets as best they could, with rubble all over the place, and rationing for years to come. The post war years in Britain had been difficult but at least the killing and destruction had ceased, and we had survived - while so many others hadn't.

🇬🇧We arrive at the weighing hut ..... The porters weigh their load before continuing to the truck further down the valley. We take the opportunity to have a little break ...including photos

The rules are strict: the baskets weigh at least 60kg and can contain up to 100kg. The average is about 90kg. About a hundred porters work on the mountainside: their employment is limited to 15 days per month. At the beginning of 2013, a kilo of sulphur was paid at 750 rupiah (Indonesian rupiah), i.e. about 5 euros per load. The monthly salary of the porters, which is considerably higher than that of a worker, does not compensate for the heaviness of the baskets and the health problems caused by the gas fumes. Their life expectancy rarely exceeds 40 years. Also, for health reasons, they are only hired for a maximum of 15 days per month.

Made from a digital photography from my portfolio, a digitally painted watercolor painting unveils the picturesque scene of an inner street within the fortified city of Carcassonne. The brushstrokes capture the essence of this historical location, where narrow cobblestone streets wind their way amidst ancient stone structures. The painting portrays a vibrant atmosphere teeming with life as tourists amble along the meandering lanes, enchanted by the allure of the medieval architecture that surrounds them.

The focal point of the artwork is the beautiful yellowish stone buildings, standing tall with their two-story structures, proudly displaying the marks of centuries gone by. The textured strokes of the brush bring life to the aged walls, highlighting their unique character and weathered charm. The warm hues of the stone reflect the sun's gentle caress, creating a harmonious interplay of light and shadow across the canvas.

The street itself appears alive, bustling with activity. The artist's attention to detail showcases the diversity of the passersby, their clothing and accessories hinting at various cultures and backgrounds. Curious tourists explore every nook and cranny, their eyes drawn to the intricate architectural details that adorn the buildings. Balconies adorned with potted plants overflow with vivid blooms, providing a splash of color against the ancient stone backdrop.

As the eye wanders deeper into the painting, the narrowness of the streets becomes apparent. The use of perspective creates an illusion of depth, guiding the viewer's gaze deeper into the heart of the city. Delicate shadows cast by the overhead sunlight dance along the street, adding a sense of movement and capturing the fleeting nature of the moment.

In this captivating watercolor, we are transported to a bygone era, where the fusion of history and everyday life creates a timeless charm. Invite us to stroll through the streets of Carcassonne, to admire the enduring beauty of its medieval architecture, and to become captivated by the unique atmosphere that emanates from every stone and passerby.

A stupa is a symbol of enlightenment and is one of the most ancient icons of Buddhist art. Stupas are also the oldest and most prevalent forms of Buddhist architecture. More than just being examples of art and architecture, these holy monuments were designed with deep symbolism and sacred geometry. Filled with Buddhist relics, and other holy objects, stupas emanate blessings and peace.

A stupa is the most sacred monument found in all of the ancient Buddhist countries. Unique amongst all forms of sacred architecture, it is the quintessential symbol of enlightenment. Stupas are filled with sacred images, mantras and the relics of holy beings. The foundation, symmetry, orientation and contents of the stupa create incredible power to those who even look upon it. It has the potential to transcend the limitations of language to activate enlightened knowledge.

The shape of the antennas is one of the criteria for identifying insects. In this case, the face of this insect is sufficiently visible and we see that it has short antennae and the presence of an arista (a silk thread emanating from the third antennal segment serving as a sensory organ). It is thus a brachycere and more precisely a Syrphidae, probably of genus Eristalis. Syrphidae are flies; they are harmless and participate in pollination. They have the ability to fly stationary.

As I stand before the ancient stone facade, a remarkable testament to a thousand years of history, I am captivated by the intriguing marks and wear that adorn its surface. Time has etched its narrative on the stones, leaving behind a tapestry of stories for those willing to listen.

The stones bear the weight of time, displaying a mosaic of hues and textures, each mark and discoloration serving as a chapter in this enduring tale. Weathered patches reveal the battles fought, the storms weathered, and the passage of countless seasons. It is as if the facade carries the weight of centuries on its shoulders, proudly displaying the scars of time as a testament to its resilience.

Nestled beside this venerable wall, a magnificent wooden door with intricate metalwork catches my eye. Crafted with skill and adorned with ornate iron hinges, it stands as a testament to the craftsmanship of a bygone era. The wood, aged and weathered like the stone, emanates a warm and inviting aura, hinting at the stories that lie beyond its threshold.

I imagine this grand scene unfolds on the outskirts of the historic city of Ghent. The grandeur and charm of this place are palpable, as if the spirit of the city seeps through every stone and every inch of wood. Perhaps this stately facade and its beautiful door guard the entrance to a majestic church, one that has witnessed countless weddings, funerals, and moments of divine connection.

In the historical city of Ghent, the past and the present intertwine harmoniously, creating a tapestry of heritage and beauty. As I take in the sight before me, I feel a deep sense of reverence and gratitude for the lives lived, the stories told, and the enduring legacy that has shaped this remarkable place.

Aptly named after Mount Potolaka, the sacred mountain abode of the Bodhisattva of Compassion, Avalokiteshvara, the Potala Palace has been identified in different ages as the residence of Tibet`s two illustrious and kingly emanations of Avalokiteshvara - Songtsen Gampo during the seventh century and the Fifth Dalai Lama during the 17th century. The building which towers above the city of Lhasa rises from the slopes of Mount Marpori, for which reason it is known locally as Tse Podrang "Summit Palace". The outer section, known as the White Palace has functioned as the traditional seat of government and the winter residence of the Dalai Lamas, while the inner section known as the Red Palace contains outstanding temples and the reliquary tombs of eight past Dalai Lamas. In terms of global perception, it is this relic of Tibet`s past, present, and future national aspiration which, more than any other, symbolizes the country of Tibet, like the great wall of China “Great Firewall of China” or the Vatican in Italy.

This 13-storeyed edifice was among the world`s tallest buildings prior to the advent of the 20th-century skyscraper, and undoubtedly the grandest building in Tibet.

The interior area of the 13-storeyed Potala Palace is 130.000 sq m. The building is 118 m high, 366 m from east to west, and 335 m from north to south. There are 1000 rooms housing approximately 200.000 images.

Traditinally the chapels of the Potala Palace were only open to the public on set days such as the fourth day of the sixth lunar month, and in the fourth lunar month. Now, in the absence of the Dalai Lama, it has the air of a (dead) museum, and is accessible throughout the week.

Standing in the water of Shan Lake are the Sun Tower and the Moon Tower . The Sun Tower is painted gold and the taller of the two. In the night it is lit with bright yellow lights. The Moon Tower has deep brown beams and aqua eaves. It outshines the sun at night, with its artificial white lights.

The two towers are open to the public and there is an underground aquarium-like viewing tunnel linking the pair. The towers are in the style of Buddhist pagodas and Buddhist music can sometimes be heard emanating from them during the day.

"East Brother Light Station was built in 1873 as an aid to mariners in the San Pablo/San Francisco Bays. After many years as an automated station, and under threat of destruction and replacement with a light on a pole in the middle of the island, the facility was taken over by a non-profit 501 c3 California Corporation under license from the US Coast Guard." This beautiful Victorian is located on an island in the strait between San Francisco Bay and San Pablo Bay and has been restored as a Bed and Breakfast and dinner destination. Source: ebls.org The lighthouse still functions; note light emanating from the lens in the lantern room.

How lovely is that clear star which emanates from each of these Morning Glory flowers?!! And to have the rain droplets decorate its surface is icing on the cake :)

Sadly this will probably be the last flower of the year for this tropical vine, since we've had two nights with frost warnings :(
