Yesterday we drove up to Big Moose Lake, about an hour away from our home. Had a fantastic dinner at the Big Moose Inn and then drove home. This is the gazebo next to the Inn. The trees are getting their new leaves, the orange is from the maples, an interesting pale imitation of their color in Autumn. The day was cloudy.
It is a historic spot, many years ago Chester Gillette murdered his pregnant girlfriend, Grace Brown, on the lake, so he could marry a rich man's daughter. Author Theodore Dreiser wrote a classic book, "An American Tragedy" about the event, and in 1951 a film "A Place In The Sun" was made based on the book. The film starring Montgomery Clift as Chester Gillette, Shelley Winters as Grace Brown, and Elizabeth Taylor as the rich man's daughter, earned several Academy Awards.
It is said if you are quiet and watchful in the evening, you may see Grace Brown's ghost hovering over the water.
We really need to talk about this cake.
Seriously. You have no idea. It's even better than the snacking cake. I didn't think that was even possible.
In 1986 when I was working on my Autographs project, I was able to contact Elizabeth Taylor, through her agent, and she was gracious enough to autograph this drawing that I did of her. I didn't meet her, but I was very pleased she liked the drawing enough to sign it. Also, I think it was because of her signing this drawing that got Michael Jackson to take notice of my work. They were great friends, and when I contacted his office to sign a drawing, he eventually saw this drawing and he agreed to sign the drawing I did of him. Which led to Michael hiring me to illustrate his coloring book, Moonwalker - The Coloring Book.
My Autographs project was something I came up with and worked on during the 1980s and early 1990s. I would do a drawing of a famous person and search them out to see if they would autograph it. I met many of them. Some of the people who signed my drawings were; President Ronald Reagan and his wife, Nancy Reagan (this was when he was President and my drawing was in the Oval Office in the White House!), Andy Warhol, Al Hirschfeld, David Levine, Liza Minnelli, Stephen Sondheim, Spike Lee, Paloma Picasso (I have a signed Picasso!), Lucille Ball, Jeremy Irons, Bernadette Peters, Mandy Patinkin, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Malcom Forbes, The Eurythmics (Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart) and Molly Ringwald to name a few.
I also had a number of rejections; Jacqueline Onassis, Bette Midler, Yoko Ono, Donald Trump, Katherine Hepburn (who wrote me a wonderful note - which she signed - so I got my autograph) and Jerry Seinfeld. There were some others. But, most of the people I contacted autographed their drawings.
It was a great project, I just did it for myself and I had a lot of fun. Meeting many of these people was a thrill!! I would have loved to have met Elizabeth Taylor in person, just to look into those beautiful violet eyes of hers!!
1939 Gone with the Wind - Vivien Leigh/Scarlett O' Hara
1953 Gentlemen Prefer Blondes - Marilyn Monroe/Lorelei Lee
1954 Rear Window - Grace Kelly/Lisa Freemont
1958 Cat on a Hot Tin Roof - Elizabeth Taylor/Maggie the Cat
1961 Breakfast At Tiffany's - Audrey Hepburn/Holly Golightly
These are my favorite actresses in some of the most amazing films ever made (at least in my opinion!) They are all dressed in their respective outfits for their characters except Elizabeth. I really wish Mattel made her slip from Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Silkstone White Diamonds Elizabeth Taylor comes with one but I am not crazy enough to pay $150 just for one outfit! So she's in something totally Liz: fur and diamonds. This line-up would be complete with Rita Hayworth as Gilda. Judy as Dorothy will be next even if her face isn't... well done! I love that these characters are clever, strong women with incomparable looks to match.
A portrait tribute to the Hollywood actress, Elizabeth Taylor (1932-); painted by Stephen B Whatley in 1993 - and inspired by photographs of the legendary star with her 8th husband Larry Fortensky, to whom she was married from 1991 to 1996.
This painting was one of 24 iconic tributes to the glamorous female stars of Hollywood's Golden Era that formed Stephen B Whatley's 1993 exhibition, Hollywood Gold, at London's Royal National Theatre.

A portrait, by pop artist Andy Warhol (1928-1987), of British-American actress Elizabeth Rosemond Taylor (1932-2011). Taylor, an actress, businesswoman, and humanitarian, began her career as a child actress in the early 1940's. She was one of the most popular stars of classical Hollywood cinema in the 1950's and considered to be one of the last major stars to have come out of the old Hollywood studio system.
Created in 1963, Warhol’s portrait of Taylor reflected the artist’s fascination with female celebrity. The portrait was one of twelve paintings of the actress which he created while Taylor was recovering from pneumonia. At the time, he didn't know Taylor well and chose as his source for this image a publicity photo from her 1960 film, Butterfield 8. It was only later in his life that he actually met Taylor and they became good friends, corresponding right up until his death in 1987.
This Warhol screen print was seen and photographed on display at San Francisco's Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) in an exhibit entitled 'Andy Warhol -From A to B and Back Again'.

Elizabeth Taylor in Cleopatra™
Elizabeth Taylor as Cleopatra — her magnificent golden costume is re-created here in splendid detail. Cleopatra's luxurious gown has a dramatic "feather" cloak that surrounds her like the wings of a bird. Her spectacular headdress features cobra symbols that protect royalty, a sun disk enclosed in horns, identifying her with the goddess Isis, and a large double feather representing cosmic harmony.
The meticulous sculpting of our Cleopatra doll captures the stunning likeness of Elizabeth Taylor. Her face is painted so realistically that every detail is authentic to the movie - from the incredibly fine glitter eye shadow and heavy kohl liner to the exact shade of violet for her eyes. She is an amazing tribute to Elizabeth Taylor in one of her most glamorous roles.
