Can kindness be an elixir? In my world, it is the truest, purest sort and I must thank Joanna for the crystal and bottle of love that arrived today full of blessings, Lisa for her thoughtfulness, and Shelley, who came this morning and sat with me and my small prince. My tiny prince was hit hardest with the flu all my children and I have experienced this week and my exhaustion settled in last night, holding tight and setting my head with a strange centrifugal spin. Life was working well, though, no grinding halts. So, after the other two princes and one princess left for school in the village and I held my tiny three year old's small frame for a couple more bouts of flu and upset, I heard a sound. I cleaned up the flu mess and rested softly, with him, keeping still. With this, I forgot to check the sound I had heard on the porch. Then, a ringing came, not the one from my tired head. It was the phone, I answered with what I thought was my usual receptive voice and Shelley heard a difference and asked, "Are you sad?" I told her the young prince was ill and she asked if she could see us and it felt perfect to say, "yes." It was then that my little prince settled into the couch and I tucked in the edges for him and on the porch was a box and it was from Joanna and she had blessed us with a healing gift and Shelley arrived shortly after.

As he laid next to me, so peaceful on the couch, Shelley and I talked easily over the delightful coffee she had brought with her and we sipped the elixir that is kindness. The elixir that is friendship and ease and enthusiasm for all that we experience. The world is so wondrous when friends like Molly or Shelley or Joanna or Joni or Lisa bring you a bit of light, a moment of thoughtful, a bag of giving, or a bottle of kindness.

Thank-you for being the essence of that elixir, dears. I hope that I, too, give bottles of kindness to you all our days. Blessings, Amy

Mrs Fotheringham of Ealing: Oh doctor! Can you cure me of my affliction?

Dr. John Evans: I believe so, after all this is 1890! My colleague Antonio and I have read extensively on the subject of acute selfieitis (to such an extent that half his face and book are missing), and we believe we can successfully remove the camera attached to your head by drinking the contents of this large bottle of awarding-winning Elixir Dentifrice! It's designed to remove bad taste.

Mrs Fotheringham: What a relief! I was so worried my child might catch it! By the way, where did you find this awful wallpaper? I'd love some for my parlour!

Dr Evans: Oh dear! It seems you have it quite bad!

Taken on an indoor studio night at the Warrington & District Camera Club where we had an array of interesting objects to photograph (EXIF didn't survive the workflow- will try to rebuild)

In 1937, Elixir Sulfanilamide was prescribed to many patients to treat infections, including sore throats. At the time, drug manufacturers were not required to prove the safety of their drugs prior to marketing. Elixir contained diethylene glycol, a highly toxic compound commonly found in antifreeze. What followed was a devastating public health disaster, causing over 100 preventable deaths. The catastrophe mobilized public support for tougher regulations, leading to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act of 1938.

It doesn´t hide too much, but doesn´t look to slutty. Just the right mixture of skin and fabric.

Or more specifically, Élixir Végétal de la Grande-Chartreuse.

In the Chartreuse Mountains of eastern France lies the Grande Chartreuse monastery. The monks there support themselves by selling a liquor made of herbal extracts. If you've ever sampled from a bottle of green or yellow Chartreuse then you've helped support this monastery.

Regular Chartreuse is not all they make, though. They also create this Elixir Vegetal, sold (as far as I know) only in 100ml bottles that come in nice wooden holders. This concoction is 71% alcohol and is created from 130 different aromatic and medicinal herbs, plants, and flowers. Typically it is consumed in small quantities as a digestif: either a few drops on a sugar cube or a few drops in sugary water. In places like the United Kingdom it's more often found in a chemist's shop (aka pharmacy) than in a liquor store.

Because the monks have refused to disclose the ingredients list the import of Elixir Vegetal for sale in the United States is prohibited. It's by no means illegal to possess or consume, but it is only obtainable if you have someone outside the US willing to bring it to you.

I have my friend Paul to thank for this. He gifted me with this bottle because of some favors I've done for him, and I'm grateful. I can't begin to estimate how many cocktail aficionados of New Orleans own their own bottle of Elixir, but I know the number is small - in part because so few people have heard of it. I know I certainly hadn't until I started hanging out with some, ah, cocktail-ingredient-focused individuals.

So if you're in the neighborhood and feeling adventurous - or full from a massive rich decadent dinner - stop by and I'll put you to rights with a few drops of magic from this bottle.

Maybe a front pic shows better, how cleverly tailored this dress is. ELIXIR can be found at :

Del elixir de juventud

bebimos juntos prometiéndonos la vida.

¿Quién nos llamó?, ¿Qué pudo ser?.

Nos puso de la mano desde el primer día.

The caipirinha is a delightful cocktail from Brazil. As easy to drink as it is to make:

Place six wedges of lime in a mixing glass, add a tablespoon and a half of sugar.

Muddle well, until all the sugar is dissolved.

Fill the mixing glass with ice and add 3 ounces of cachaça.

Shake well and strain into a rocks glass filled with crushed ice.

Enjoy.
