Cozia Monastery, erected close to Călimănești by Mircea the Elder in 1388 and housing his tomb, is one of the most valuable monuments of national medieval art and architecture in Romania. The name of the monastery is of Cuman origin and it means "walnut grove", from Turkic word koz, meaning walnut.[1] The original name of the place was the Romanian equivalent, Nucetul, but already in 1387, a document of Mircea cel Bătrân uses the current name.[1]

The fortified cloister dates from the foundation (1388) and is the only in Byzantine style preserved in Romania. Two chapels are incorporated in the side toward the Olt River and their Byzantine cupolas are reflected in the water, creating one of the most iconic cultural - natural landmarks in Romania.

The appearance of the church was modified under Neagoe Basarab (1517), Şerban Cantacuzino and Constantin Brâncoveanu (1707), who added a veranda, a new fountain, a chapel and a watch tower, adding to its architecture the 'brâncovenesc style'.

The wall facets' decorations with stone rosettes, horizontal Byzantine-style rows of brick and stone and vertical frames are unprecedented in Wallachian architecture. The resemblance with Lazarica church indicates that Mircea cel Bătrân has employed Serbian craftsmen from the Morava School.

Of great value is the hospital church, 'bolnița' (1543), with original well-preserved indoor frescoes like the votive portrait of ruler Mircea cel Bătrân and his sons.

Cozia was painted between 1390 and 1391. Some of the original frescoes (1390) are still well preserved.

The church of the monastery was put on a stamp from the Romanian stamp in 1968.

I paid a brief visit to the Festival of South Asia in "Little India" which is a short bicycle ride from my home in east-end Toronto.

This gentleman caught my eye with his strong, proud look. I approached him with a request to photograph him, explaining that he would make an excellent portrait and adding a gesture to my camera when I wasn't sure he spoke English. There was, in fact, a language barrier but a man (who I assume was his son) helped out with interpretation and the man nodded.

I took the photo and showed it to him. He remained impassive except for one more slight nod. I thanked him and had the feeling it satisfied me more than him. :-)

It would be hard for me to imagine him laughing at a joke - but like everyone, I'm sure he does.

What a great, strong face.

Overnight the temperatures dropped drastically and this box elder had sap dripping from its broken branch.

It froze and in the drop, there seems to be a reflection of the sky above and the woods.

Just like the Bonda Elder Woman, this old woman from one of the Gadaba villages around Onukudelli, had the confidence of a person with wisdom. She greeted us with the dignity of an elder woman.

The Gabada tribe is reckoned as one of the oldest and jovial tribes in India. It is believed that they have their ancestral home in the north Vindhya mountain ranges. In fact Gabada has got a link with Gada, which is a name of brook or a streamlet found in this portion of the Indian Territory.

The Gadaba village was quite close to the main county town, so the outfit of this old lady doesn't typically represent the original Gadaba costume.

Photos of Gadabas with original looks will be posted later.

The overnight ground frost has yet to thaw from the grass and the solitary ground elder elder which has found solitude in the railway yard on the Romanian Viseu de Sus logging railway in the Maramures district. A 1950s-built Resita 0-8-0 tank (764-469) moves through the shed yard to take on logs for the days work ahead, preceded by a member of ground staff to operate the point levers.

"Elder Park is a public open space in the city of Adelaide, South Australia on the southern bank of the River Torrens and that is bordered by the Adelaide Festival Centre and North Terrace.

The park is named after the Elder family who were early settlers and developed the company Elder Smith (previously known as Goldsborough Mort).

The Elder Park Rotunda was erected in 1882. The Popeye boat is launched off the banks of the River Torrens, near Elder Park as well as paddleboats. Bicycle hire is also available from Elder Park. The Torrens Linear Walk also passes through Elder Park.

It is the home of the annual Christmas Carols by Candlelight for Adelaide and also hosts Symphony under the Stars and the Adelaide Festival of Arts.
