…before you fall.

Bipolar disorder affects approximately 5.7 million adult Americans, or about 2.6% of the U.S. population age 18 and older every year. (National Institute of Mental Health). The median age of onset for bipolar disorder is 25 years (National Institute of Mental Health), although the illness can start in early childhood or as late as the 40's and 50's. Bipolar disorder results in 9.2 years reduction in expected life span, and as many as one in five patients with bipolar disorder completes suicide. (National Institute of Mental Health). Please, please, please, educate yourself. If you think you, or someone you know, may be suffering from bipolar disorder, please look at the sites below. This means a lot to me and I will everyone to check these sites out.

Again, I cannot stress enough how important this is to me, so please, follow the links.

Anyway, I am back! And by back, I mean you won’t be able to get rid of me! Starting next Monday I will be uploading very often, I’m talking about every other day at the least. Tomorrow is my last day of school, the last day for exams, and with all of my free time this summer, I plan to fill up my empty 365!

I’m so excited! This summer will be awesome, I get to go to so many places, and take my camera with me. So, I’m really looking forward to the two months off I have from school; which, like always, has kept me away from flickr for the past few weeks.

I wanted to apologize to those who have mailed me or marked me as a contact recently, I have been swamped with studying for exams and I haven’t had time to look through anything on flickr. So, you can expect a reply within a few days!

I also wanted to thank all of you for the comments and favourites I received for my previous photo. That was my first explore #1, and I am very honoured!

Thank you bunches!

Oh, and facebook has filled my free time. Yes, I got one. Not so sure I’m liking the no privacy bit of it (parents constantly checking it), but I like chatting with my friends. I’m not sure yet if I’ll post a link for it on here or not, but if you want to add me, flickr mail me with your address and name etc.

So, what are you all doing for summer? Going anywhere fun?

Educate yourself. Read books, listen to podcasts, do your research. Don't be a sheeple. Push back against false information.

This young lady is a rescue great horned owl. During her rehabilitation, she was brought to the Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch near where I live to educate the public about birds. She was perched on a woman's arm and the woman was telling passersby the owl's story. Beautiful bird.

On the first Saturday in September, International Vulture Awareness Day recognizes the dwindling numbers of vultures. The day not only raises awareness about vulture numbers, but it educates the public, too. Vultures play an essential role in the ecological health of the environment.

These scavengers play a vital role in the food chain. Vultures act as nature’s garbage disposers. When they devour carcasses quickly, vultures keep the environment clean. They also help keep it free of contagious diseases.

Another role vultures play is aiding in catching poachers. When poachers illegally kill animals, they leave the carcass behind. After vultures find the carcass, they circle above the dead animal. This behavior leads authorities to the poached animals.

Because vultures aid authorities, many people kill the birds. After collecting the skins or other prizes, the poachers poison the remaining carcass. Consequently, poisoned vultures then become deadly to other scavengers.

Many species of vultures are considered endangered. Of the 23 species, 16 of them are considered endangered, vulnerable, or threatened.

My brother has always been in awe of me. Haha, Denny.

I am beginning to wonder if we have to change the way we educate our children, they seem to have missed so much learning throughout the last 2 years? I have 9 grandchildren and they most certainly have suffered from the COVID-19 pandemic. I wonder, if we should come up with new ideas, we have many brilliant minds in our society, I think that they most definitely should be coming up with new ways as to how best educate our children and make life better for families. I wish that I had a brilliant mind because I most definitely would be working on this problem amongst others. So those of you who can, please put your minds to this gigantic problem. Education is a must, we learn to interact, debate (not quarrel), respect one another, find ways to work together successfully in teams, listen, and can spend our whole lives learning which is fulfilling! Thank you for putting up with my thoughts.

Thank you for your kind visit. Have a wonderful and beautiful day! ❤️❤️❤️

The sky is dark, and it continues to rain. I am in ache which is like being in pain but difficult to pin down like a medical game of Pac Man. Having a little trouble moving. And so, I have decided to give you a photographic representation of a condition known as "California Schizophrenia." It must be real: I've got it.

I am not here to educate. I'd rather entertain. But today, I'd like to do me (and you) a favor. For all of you who think that Greta Thundberg is a genius, I give you the following:

"I have spoken of the rich years when the rainfall was plentiful. But there were dry years too, and they put a terror on the valley. The water came in a thirty-year cycle. There would be five or six wet and wonderful years when there might be nineteen to twenty-five inches of rain, and the land would shout with grass. Then would come six or seven pretty good years of twelve to sixteen inches of rain. And then the dry years would come, and sometimes there would be only seven or eight inches of rain. The land dried up and the grasses headed out miserably a few inches high and great bare scabby places appeared in the valley. The live oaks got a crusty look and the sagebrush was gray. The land cracked and the springs dried up and the cattle listlessly nibbled dry twigs. Then the farmers and the ranchers would be filled with disgust for the Salinas Valley. The cows would grow thin and sometimes starve to death. People would have to haul water in barrels to their farms just for drinking. Some families would sell out for nearly nothing and move away. And it never failed that during the dry years the people forgot about the rich years, and during the wet years they lost all memory of the dry years. It was always that way."

We live in a world where science education is more important than ever. The internet has allowed relatively small groups of people with whacky views (e.g. flat earthers) to find each other and the amount of science misinformation has grown exponentially.

On the other hand, the disciplines of science have also been captured by political and social agendas. The very idea there is a "consensus view" in science is anathema to the scientific method. As Galileo showed, one right idea about the universe dispels any amount of false consensus. By its very nature science is heretical, always challenging the safe orthodoxies which have grown up around pet ideas.

So we need science education more than ever, because unlike the arts (which let's face it are merely luxury beliefs), science and technology builds our world.

Questacon is a fine museum of science in Canberra with the express purpose of educating the young and encouraging careers in the sciences. The hands-on exhibition, Science on the Move, recently came to Launceston QVMAG and provides children with fun opportunities to experiment and play with various science tools. Making science fun is a very important part of educating more scientists for the future.

Maybe this owl does not look amused because it suffers from Irritable Owl Syndrome, ha, ha. So many owl species tend to have an "angry" expression. An up close and personal shot of a little Burrowing Owl, who resides at the Alberta Bird of Prey Centre in Coaldale, southern Alberta, a wonderful place that rehabilitates and releases (whenever possible) various birds of prey - hawks, owls, Bald Eagles, Turkey Vultures, and Golden Eagles. Some of these birds act as Wildlife Ambassadors, too, educating the public.

""As a result of its ENDANGERED Species status in 1995, it has the focus of a variety of conservation efforts. Operation Burrowing Owl and other projects involving habitat preservation with landowners have been created. Populations are monitored by Fish and Wildlife departments. They have been reintroduced into the British Columbia interior, where it was extirpated. Outlook would improve if larger areas of habitat were preserved and harmful pesticides were banned in all areas of their range. Numbers could increase if an increased tolerance to burrowing mammals develops (i.e. badgers) – provides homes for the Burrowing Owl. Outlook: perilous." From burrowingowl.com.

I have only ever once seen a Burrowing Owl - two, possibly three of them - in the wild, and I was so very lucky to get that chance. To say that it was a thrill is an understatement! These endangered owls are tiny and so difficult to see, especially when they are down in the grasses. I may add a previously posted photo of a wild one in a comment box below.

It had been a few years since my last visit to the Alberta Birds of Prey Centre - I had only been maybe three or four times - and I had been longing to go back. Much too far and all new driving territory for me to even think about driving there myself. However, on 9 September 2016, that is exactly what I did. A friend had said she would come along, too, but she emailed me at 1:00 am that morning to say that she assumed our trip had been cancelled, as she hadn't heard back about the time to meet. In fact, I had sent two emails giving the time, so I don't know what happened there. Very unfortunate, as it would have been great to have had company on such a long drive, and I know she would have had fun with her camera.

I knew it would be a long day and further than I would normally drive - and in a brand new car that I had/have yet to learn to drive! It didn't look or feel quite as new after travelling 481 km! Only got lost twice, one minor and the other major. Must have taken a wrong turn somewhere way down south and I ended up in the city of Lethbridge, that I had very carefully planned to avoid. After driving for three and three-quarter hours, I finally arrived at my destination, to my huge relief.

Despite getting there later than I had hoped, I still had more than enough time to wander round the grounds and photograph the various raptors. Some were tethered out in a grassy area and others, including this Burrowing Owl, were in outdoor cages. It looks like this one had an injury to its beak? Wonderful to get such a close look at the various majestic birds.

I took a slightly different way home via #845 (?), making absolutely sure that I didn't accidentally find myself in Lethbridge again and it wasn't too long before I found myself in the area that I had driven weeks ago, when I went SW of Vulcan to look for Common Nighthawks (without any luck).

Just so happy that I finally made myself do this drive. When I Googled the Centre's website, I had discovered that they were closing two days later for the winter. So, it was either a case of going the next day or not at all till next May onward.

The day after this adventure, 10 September 2016, I took my daughter on a long drive in Kananaskis. This was yet another place that I had longed to be able to drive for many years - and finally I did it! I had been lots of times with various friends, but this was the very first time I had ever driven myself. We had planned to do this a few weeks earlier, but then my car had major repairs that needed to be done. Instead, I knew I just couldn't put any more money into my 17-year-old car, and I ended up replacing it. So glad we went on this particular day, as it snowed the following day.

Both Misty and Milo love to perch themselves up high on their rock which is awesome for me because this is where i can get some half decent shots ;)

It can happen right on your very doorstep - as I found out recently, as a mural in memory of Scott Hutchinson, the former Frightened Rabbit frontman was senselessly daubed with vile homophobic graffiti.

Last year Glasgow-based artist Alex Coyle unveiled a striking triptych depiction of the singer on a wall in Allison Street to raise awareness of the Tiny Changes organisation (tinychanges.com). The Glasgow band frontman took his own life in 2018 at the age of 36 after a long battle with depression. The charity was established soon after his tragic death with the aim to educate and raise awareness of mental illness in young people.

The street artist included the name of the charity in his design, but the local community was dismayed to find phallic imagery and the phrase ‘Art f**’ on one of the featured three illustrations of Hutchison’s face in vibrant red, blue and green.

This image catches the artist doing some 'running-repairs' to the middle image daubed with said homophobic graffiti - a process that involved painting over the middle face to turn it into a new image.

These photos are from the first day of the 2022 WonderCon. This is the best ComicCon and it was nice to go back again after it was cancelled for the past two years. Thanks to all the awesome Cosplayers that let me shoot with them. I feel bad that I'm not up to speed on who the characters being portrayed at all. Feel free to educate me. Thanks!

I took these photos in on Friday, 1 April 2022, the first day of WonderCon.

“What are you thinking about, Sky?” Asked Barnaby.

“I’m not thinking, Barnaby, I’m thunking. After one has thought a thought, one has thunked and as I am in the process of such a manoeuvre, I am thunking.” Explained Sky.

“I wish I had your education, Sky. I thunk I will be clever in time as Posh Bear says he will teach me all he knows and so did Bertie.”

“That is good to hear, Barnaby. I’ll try and help along the way if I am able. It does take time to become bigger and cleverer and that is what I have been thunking about as it happens.”

“Fascinating, Sky, and what conclusions did you arrive at?” Asked Posh Bear.

“I don’t know if I did, as I have no idea what conclusions are. I did arrive at some decisions though, which I feel might work and make me even more clever and bigger than I already am.”

“Wowsers, Sky, you are already such a clever and also a growing bear, so what were your decisions?” asked Bertie.

“I based my ideas on watching the man, Bertie.”

“I feel you might be on shaky ground there, Sky.” Said Bertie shaking his head sadly.

“You could be right, but that is what I have done. You see, I was going back in my memory to when it was hot and there were lots of buzzy things about. When the man wanted some of those pretty plants to flower and grow, he threw wet stuff over them. What is more it worked, well much to my surprise, they did become bigger and stronger and bore pretty, coloured flowers for the buzzy things.”

“I see, Sky, so you feel that if you could find some of that wet stuff and had it thrown over you, then you too would grow bigger and have a pretty flowering head?” Asked Barnaby.

“Not quite, Barnaby, but you get the idea. If I want to be big and strong then I need some of that wet stuff the man used. Now, to throw wet stuff over oneself, Barnaby, is not easy, no matter how wet it is, so I had to thunk further until I had worked out the answer.”

“As Bertie always says, wowsers, Sky, you are so clever I’d never have thunked that. What was the answer?”

“I decided that I should wait until that wet stuff falls from the white fluffy things and then I could have wet stuff thrown over me without me doing the throwing.”

“That is brilliant, can I try it out with you, Sky?” Asked Barnaby.

“I suppose you could, Barnaby, that is if you wanted to.”

“Sky, how do you know that the wet stuff that comes down from the white fluffy things is the same wet stuff as the man threw on the flowers? Also, if the white fluffy things are not as white as they seem and are dark inside then you may get covered with grey wet stuff.” Pointed out Bertie who had also thought this through.

“Yes, I do see your points and very good points they are too. I feel this needs further thunking as it needs to be correct.” Said Sky scratching his head with his paw.

“Sky, do I need to thunk as well?” Asked Barnaby looking confused.

“No, neither of you need to think or thunk this through for I can tell you.” Said Posh Bear. “The wet stuff the man uses on the flowers is perfect for the flowers, it is like honey is to us bears. We don’t need to get our fur wet like that, we can drink our wet stuff with things like juice and the stuff that comes out of the tap that we call tapperlene. The only time you need to get your fur wet is when you bathe and that is best done when it is hot outside so your fur dries much faster.”

“Then how can I become bigger and cleverer then, Posh?” Asked Sky.

“Keep asking questions, Sky, that is the best way, that and look at the picture books and you’ll soon learn. Eat up your honey and you’ll grow too. It is very simple.” Explained Posh Bear.

“In that case I must be doing the right things too. I eat my honey and drink my juice and then ask Sky, my bestest friend lots of questions. It is so good to know that I am well on my way to becoming a big bear clever-clogs.” Said Barnaby grinning at the thought.

“Well, something like that, anyway.” Said Posh Bear softly.

My thought on composing this image was to zoom in with the focal length and have much of the image be filled with the ridge that consisted of the Balconies.

I am a strong believer one should educate kids how to handle animals. A friend pointed out that n some annual festival in Mississippi people let kids chase rabbits and other animals until they catch them, and let them hold the rabbits by the ears. Please sign the petition if you're browsing the web anyway. Apart from educating the kids around you how one should handle animals, it is the least you can do.

This rabbit is my friend's. He's an angora rabbit (you know, the ones that are plucked alive and then scream because it is so incredibly painful to be plucked alive, because we want angora sweaters). Jochem in the picture is cut regularly - his wool is 7 times warmer than sheep's wool. If it grows too long, he will get too hot. I could tell you stories about people breeding these and going to shows with them where their wool has to be long, and the rabbits die of over heating because attending a show with such amounts of wool on them is no fun in summer. But I won't. Because I choose my friends wisely. Because Jochem is cut regularly so he won't get too warm.

Berta is back.
