Baños de Agua Santa Tungurahua Ecuador

Ecuador's capitol sits at a dizzying elevation of 2,850 meters. It was built on ancient Incan city and has a well-preserved colonial center or what's called old town. The city had a very surreal feel to it, possibly due to it's high elevation.

This one posed in Ecuador, but Vermilion Flycatchers also nest just 30 minutes from my house. You’d think that would take some of the magic out of it, but no. He showed up like he knew the assignment: bright crimson feathers, hot pink bougainvillea, sage green velvet in the background—like someone hired a stylist with too much access to the color wheel.

And the bird? A five-and-a-half-inch diva with wings. The males always look like they were dipped in strawberry syrup and dared to act casual about it. The females are subtler—grayish, peach-bellied, reasonable. But the males? The males are walking exclamation points.

He didn’t flit. He didn’t hunt. He just perched like a living Valentine and dared me to get the angle wrong.

He’s not here to blend or behave or be meek—

Just a crimson show-off on a bougainvillea boutique.
