Mangrove trees cover the coastlines of South Florida, sometimes growing inland depending on the amount of salt water present within the Everglades ecosystems. During dryer years when less fresh water flows to the coast, mangroves will appear among fresh water plants. When rain is abundant, sawgrass and other fresh water plants may be found closer to the coast. Three species of mangrove trees—red (Rhizophora mangle), black (Avicennia germinans), and white (Laguncularia racemosa)—can be found in the Everglades. Due to their high tolerance of salt water, winds, extreme tides, high temperatures, and muddy soils, mangrove trees are uniquely adapted to extreme conditions. They act as nurseries for many marine and bird species. They are also Florida's first defense against the destructive forces of hurricanes, absorbing flood waters and preventing coastal erosion.[39] The mangrove system in Everglades National Park is the largest continuous system of mangroves in the world. Sustainable forest management involves the maintenance and enhancement of forest environments, ensuring longevity of forest ecosystems while allowing the best possible environmental, economic, social and cultural opportunities now and into the future. In Canada, the world’s largest exporter of forest products, harvest rates and strict jurisdictions are set to ensure long term ecosystem sustainability, protecting soil and water resources and 55% of all energy used by the forestry sector is renewable bio-energy.

HOLANDUCÍA Puerto Banus / The ecosystem consists of a lifechain ranging from wild flowers and mature trees that house and feed the seasons insects who in turn feed the birds, rodents and reptiles (who in turn feed the birds of pray).

80 % of the migrant birds of Northern Europe stop yearly in Andalucia on their way to or from Africa, the most famous resting, breeding and nesting reserve being the Doñana Park in Cadiz. Destroying ths ecosystem (planned by local authorities) would eliminate the natural predators of species we might consider a nuisance and could as a consequence modify the type and quantity of insects or rodents we live with here. As an example, eliminating the frogs who breed in the riverbanks and who feed on mosquitoes and flies would alter the natural balance of the insect colonies. Clearing fields of wild flowers would reduce the amount of caterpillars, butterflies and otherinstects on which the bird colonies are dependent for nesting and feeding. Cutting down trees ( some of considerable age) would destroy the habitat areas of all the mentioned species.

Covering such important surface with cement would alter and rise the local temperatures, since the humidity generated by its present plants cools the hot temperatures by night. This is one of the principles of global warming, but on local scale. This is one of the last such ecosystem in the area. This photo set is to show what we would lose if the area is destroyed by these impending building plans and projects. Proyecto La Herencia aims to raise awareness about the need for protection of this land with its ecosystem and create a debate about how best to do so. Please google the Proyecto La Herencia de Banus / Save Holanducia facebook-group and join our group for support . Thank you so much.

The Maloti Mountains in Lesotho are a unique yet fragile ecosystem. The region is dominated by inspiring mountain landscapes and is home to globally and locally significant biodiversity and cultural heritage. Conservation international identifies this area as one of the world's 20 mountain biodiversity "hot spots" with liigh endemism. The area also provides a variety of ecosystem services, including freshwater to users in Lesotho, South Africa, and Namibia due to a network of pristine alpine wetland system. It is on the remote eastern edge of this spectacular scenic mountain range in the Lesotho district of Qacha's Nek and the southernmost tip of the country where the 6500ha core of Sehlabathebe National Park (SNP) is located.

The Paseo de las Iglesias Phase 1 project has 3 main goals per the Bond: River Park, Ecosystem Restoration and Erosion Protection. Below is a summary of each of the final amenities in each category to be constructed onsite.

The project will provide river park pathway and amenities including 2.7 miles of paved pathway (16’ wide), 2.2 miles of DG pathway (8’ wide) and 10,305 new trees, shrubs and cacti irrigated using permanent irrigation, temporary irrigation and Dri-water irrigation methods. The water sources will be reclaimed water. With the construction of Paseo de las Iglesias the Loop will have an 8 mile continuous section on the Santa Cruz River. Amenities will also include 3 parking areas; the west side paved parking area with restroom, ramada and seating, east side paved parking and ramada, and west side equestrian staging area with dirt parking and mounting block.

The project will provide ecosystem restoration element including a plant pallet comprised of native species local to this part of the Santa Cruz but also sustainable for current conditions, water harvesting basins, preserve in place areas for vegetation and habitat, and special habitat structures like lizard habitat and raptor perches. Additionally, Lizard and amphibian salvage to be performed by RFCD though subcontract to Dr. Rosen at U of A. RFCD contracted with Dr. Rosen to collect and monitor lizards in a fenced off area off Cottonwood Lane south of the Community Garden. The fence has been constructed by Dr. Rosen and lizard catching is in progress. Other amphibians will also be salvaged for later release. This will be treated as a do not disturb area during construction. The focus of the restoration work will be improvement to Mesquite Circle Pond which is home to 9 unique and special interest native species and one of the jewels of urban Tucson herpetological community.

The project will provide erosion protection including 1.4 miles of new soil cement bank protection, 0.4 miles of gabion bank protection, and additional methods such as rip rap, rock plating and terracing.

In addition to the decorative elements designed by the landscape architect there will be Public Art elements. With the assistance of the Tucson Pima Arts Council, we selected public artist Andy Dufford. He has been working on an entry monument and ramada for the project site. We have also been working with Las Artes, a local Arts and Education center, on a tile mural at the restroom.

During the design process our individual Section 404 permit was obtained from the Army Corps of Engineers, cultural resources mitigation was performed and letter of clearance issued from SHPO, Intergovernmental Agreement obtained with from the City of Tucson regarding property within the project area and permits with ADOT applied for. A cultural resources/archeological Phase I, Class III study was completed. The study was conducted to the current standard and determined the extent of archeological resources on site. Based on the results from the study a mitigation plan was created to determine and plan for the extent of the impacts of the project and the necessary remediation. Additionally, a goal of the project is to create signage for a segment the proposed pathway to represent the Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail along the west bank of the Santa Cruz River that commemorates the 1775-1776 expedition and the historic Paseo de las Iglesias Trail.
