HISTORY
This pillar is one of sixteen triangulation stations used on a survey to detect movement in the Great Glen on the banks of Loch Ness and the Caledonian Canal. There are two networks of these pillars which were installed in 1972. One network comprises of Great Glen Project Stations A to D. That network spans Loch Ness just south of Urquhart Bay. The other network which comprises of Stations E to P spans the glen at Fort Augustus. These triangulation pillars are not indicated on Ordnance Survey maps. There was no available data for them. Stations E to P had all been found by 2007 and their positions are now all documented. Stations A to D were to remain undiscovered until 2022 when Station D was found. At the time of writing, Stations A, B and C have still to be found.
SITE VISIT
Located in woods at the edge of a narrow fire break, luckily the FB faces outwards. The standard Hotine pillar is in good condition. The spider centre is plugged with the usual coarse granular substance. The flush Bracket faces SW, compass measurement 222°. Three horizontal sight holes are open, the left port is plugged, the pillar bolt is viewable. This pillar took quite a bit of finding. Pleasant location, but the view is lost to conifers.
Photographed: 23rd August 2007, GRP.
