Just about time to put the toy away for the long Chicago winter. This winters project is stripping the interior and adding in Dynamat sound deadener and new weather seals all around. Still saving up for a complete new audio system. I priced a few custom installs and for the price it got me thinking between new sounds or going with adding disc brakes on all four corners. Either way, still have to convince the wife that we don't need a new dishwasher...

After two failures at rounding up a good ’33 Ford coupe body, Tim Kirby was able to make “lemonade out of lemons”

There are hot rods that are flashy and loaded with one-of-a-kind details, and it’s these incredible attributes we remember. And then there are those hot rods that are so subtle you walk past them the first time but when you get the hamburger out of your mouth you realize this is the one. Such may just be the case for Tim Kirby of Fountain Hills, Arizona, and his channeled ’33 Ford three-window coupe expertly crafted and assembled at Hot Rods By Dean (HRBD) of Phoenix.

Flashy it isn’t. There’s enough black to make you look for a light switch. It’s well detailed but as a driver there will be the rock chips and bugs on the windshield shortly. There’s plenty of imagination. Yet you realize there’s a great deal of traditional hot rod resting on the axles and buttoned up between the headlights and taillights. Craftsmanship, well that’s something all of us understand and strive for when we build our own ride. Complex or simple the craftsmanship is readily seen. As for stance all of us have seen enough hot rods so that you would think we could all “nail” the look with our own ride. Such isn’t always the case, but we do strive.

When we first look at Tim’s ’33 it’s the lack of flash and its subtleness that makes an immediate impression. As for the detail, imagination, craftsmanship, and stance, this channeled three-window has it in spades. There’s no denying the coupe was built in a traditional theme with the ’50s-era 303-inch Olds V-8 topped with an Edelbrock intake supporting a triple-play of modern Stromberg 97s fed by an EELCO fuel block equipped with a fuel pressure gauge. The awaiting gas rests in a ’34 Chevy passenger car gas tank that was modified by HRBD to fit within the ’33 trunk. Take a close look at the air cleaners—fabricated by Tim he made them from ’53 Caddy air ducts. (Speaking of imagination!) The NASCAR ’57 Olds valve covers are other vintage items outfitted with the telltale “bump,” allowing the use of a high-lift cam by giving the rockers the necessary clearance. The exhaust system was fabricated at HRBD using 1-5/8-inch primary tubes with 2-inch pipe and Smithy’s mufflers. If you have looked closely at the engine photo (look again) you will see what appear to be two alternators. Hmm, probably not but what gives? One of the “generators” is a PowerGEN alternator from Powermaster Performance while the second generator housing is just that, a “house” for the Vintage Air compressor. A clever and masterful way to give the car modern electrics and A/C all the while keeping the engine in its traditional appearance. The cooling system (brass radiator and fan) was fabricated at HRBD while the ignition is a Vertex magneto using steel core wires.

Backing the vintage eight is an ’80s-era Chevy S-10 Tremec T5 via an EELCO trans adaptor sandwiching a Hays clutch and flywheel package. The shifter was modified and employs HRBD-fabricated mechanical linkage. At the corners more vintage hot rodding is on view with Kelsey Hayes (milk truck) wheels adapted with ’33 V-8 caps measuring 18×3-1/2 wrapped with Excelsior 4.50s in front and Firestone 7.00s in the rear.

The chassis began life as a ’33 Ford but has undergone many HRBD mods that include a custom-made centersection, flipped rear framehorns, and a modified front crossmember to the 113-inch wheelbase. The front suspension is based on a HRBD straight-axle using ’37 Ford spindles with SO-CAL Speed Shop tube shocks, ’39 Lincoln Zephyr drum brakes, and F-1 steering. The rear suspension is built around a V-8 quick-change with an open differential spinning 4.60 gears, 31-spline axles, and ’39 Zephyr drum brakes. Locating the rearend are ’37 Zephyr split wishbones, custom springs, and SO-CAL Speed Shop tube shocks.

Resting on top of this HRBD chassis is a gennie Ford ’33 three-window coupe body with 3 inches taken out of the front and 2 inches from the rear by Jonathan Williams of HRBD along with a top insert by HRBD’s Ron McCorkle who also fabricated the working cowl vent. The body was then channeled by HRBD with a boatload of other sheetmetal mods. These modifications include a custom firewall, doorsills, windshield laid back, louvered decklid (lots!), replaced quarter-panels, a modified four-door sedan floor fit to the three-window, front and rear functional windows, and a modified ’33 Ford grille and insert. The headlights are ’35 Nash while the taillights are custom-made by HRBD with stock ’33 Ford stands. From here the bodywork was handled by HRBD’s Chris Walker and afterward the PPG black paint was sprayed on by HRBD’s Frank Bennett.

Inside the sheetmetal is a dashboard that began life as a ’33 with a ’36 dash top flipped 180 degrees and used on the bottom of the ’33 while utilizing the “waterfall.” The traditional combo of five Stewart-Warner mechanical gauges (speedo, water, oil, fuel, amp) were housed in the engine-turned dash insert while an EZ Wiring kit was put to use by HRBD’s Tony Arme. From here the Vintage Air A/C unit and lots of Dynamat insulation is used to control the creature comfort temps. The ’40 Ford steering column that operates the F-1 box is twisted through a ’50s boat wheel—a Sheller two-spoke that was most commonly used from 1940 to 1957 on Chris Craft boats.

The modified bench seat is covered in black vinyl as are the door panels, all by Glenn Kramer of Hot Rod Interiors, while the floor covering is rubber mat neatly trimmed with metal rings and stitched edges. The pedal assembly is another HRBD effort.

This ’33 is as traditional looking as they come but it’s sprinkled with enough modern goodies to make this something any hot rodder worth his toolbox would thoroughly enjoy driving cross-country. Be on the lookout when in the Phoenix area and see if a very evil-looking channeled ’33 coupe is coming up fast in your rearview mirror.

"A 6x6 version of the popular Dynamat Powerdrive DP-57, the 6x6 can traverse rough terrain with the same ease as it's smaller counterpart, while it's extended cargo bay and more powerful engine allow it to carry supplies wherever they are needed"

This stunning example of a 1957 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz Convertible just underwent a complete frame-off nut and bolt restoration. No expense was spared during the restoration and the results speak for themselves. The vehicle was purchased from the Robert E. Turnquist estate. It had been resting in a barn for the better part of 25 years, remaining completely unmolested and as straight as the day it left the factory.

This ‘57 Eldorado came complete with almost every option offered in 1957: Dual carburetors with bat wing air cleaner (boosting engine output to 325hp), Power release and closing assist trunk, fiber glass parade boot, fog lights, 6-way power seat, etc… It also features the incredibly RARE Factory A/C Option. Very few of these vehicles left the factory with this option installed. For a restorer, you dream of finding a vehicle this complete (literally every piece intact on the car) and this highly optioned.

These are incredibly expensive vehicles to restore, and their value reflects this expense. Recently, a 1957 Eldorado Biarritz Convertible sold for $280,000 at the Mecum 2010 Indianapolis Collector Car Auction. The car was white with green metallic interior, but did not come with factory A/C.

This restoration began with the entire vehicle being completely disassembled and inventoried. All the upholstery was removed from the panels/seats and saved for templates. The vehicle and all of its parts were then carefully media blasted back to bare metal, and then sealed with a 2-part epoxy primer.

The frame and all of the chassis components were painstakingly brought back to like new condition, all smoothed and then finished with a 2-part satin finish chassis paint. The differential was overhauled, and the drive shaft was refurbished complete with new carrier bearing and u-joints. The suspension was then assembled with all new components in the front and all new bushings/hardware in the rear. From the center link to the tie rod ends, from the ball joints to the brake hardware, everything was brought back to new or better than new condition and operation.

The Engine underwent a complete teardown and rebuild by a machine shop. A new camshaft, lifters, rods, connecting rods, pistons, rings, seals, bearings, etc. were all used to bring the 365 cu. In. V-8 back to new condition. The water pump was rebuilt with NOS components, as well as the power steering pump, power steering gear box, generator, A/C compressor, and dual four barrel carburetors. No expense was spared and originality was maintained in every way. The transmission was also overhauled to complete like new condition.

The brake system also underwent a complete overhaul. The master cylinder and brake boost were both rebuilt to new specs. The entire brake line system was replaced with new stainless steel brake lines. All the rubber hoses were also replaced as well as the wheel cylinders. The drum brakes were turned and all new brake shoes were installed with new hardware.

The fuel tank was completely flushed and cleaned before being installed back on the vehicle. A new stainless steel fuel sending unit was installed as well. The fuel lines were also replaced with all new stainless steel fuel lines. To maintain originality, the fuel pump was also overhauled instead of using a cheaper reproduction.

The vehicle’s body was meticulously repaired back to new condition before being given the “white glove” treatment to bring all the panel lines and door gaps back to better than new condition. The bodywork was completed and the entire vehicle was then disassembled again to be primed and painted. Again, a high quality 2-part epoxy primer was used, followed by a base coat/clear coat system to give the vehicle the amazing depth and color that people expect with this caliber of a restoration. The vehicle was color-sanded thru 3000 grit before being meticulously buffed out to the ultra high “wet look” gloss that you see today.

The brand new red leather upholstery was painstakingly reproduced by Arturo’s Aircraft Upholstery out of Kingman, Az. The original upholstery was used as a template to provide an exact replica of what you would have seen on the show room floor. Every stitch, bolster, and panel line are all in the correct location. The foam, canvas, etc.. were all replaced with new, as well as all the metal being epoxy primed, before being wrapped with the beautiful red leather. The vehicle was also lined with Dynamat before having the jute and bright red cut pile carpet installed. This provides an incredibly quite ride.

The convertible top was replaced with a new black vinyl top. The hydraulic pump, cylinders, and hoses were all replaced with new components. The top frame was overhauled completely, replacing any worn out bushings or hardware. It functions flawlessly through its entire range of motion for the “oh-so-rare” times you want to have the top up.

The chrome on this vehicle was one of the largest expenses incurred. There are receipts in excess of $25,000 for all of the chrome and stainless components that were refurbished. The aluminum “bumper-ettes” were painstakingly brought back to new condition before being plated. An additional cost was incurred to have the 5 saber wheels plated with real 24K (solid) gold. Everywhere you look, the chrome on this vehicle is as flawless as it is breathtaking.

The electrical harness on this vehicle was replaced with a reproduction harness that is correct in every detail, including the original plug ends. Every electrical component was overhauled to like new condition. Every window switch, every ashtray and cigar lighter, the headlights, the instrument panel, the courtesy lights, literally every component has been refurbished and works as new.

All the glass was replaced with new, including the Windshield. All new weather-stripping was used on this vehicle, from the windshield gasket, to the ash tray bumpers, from the body bushings to the convertible top. Every piece fits and functions perfectly.

This vehicle amazes you in every way. Everywhere you look the attention to detail can be appreciated. Originality was maintained throughout the restoration, extensively using an authenticity manual for reference. There were no corners cut, no expenses spared, and an incredible amount of blood sweat and tears poured into this restoration. Hours upon countless hours were spent to make this the finest example of the Eldorado Biarritz Convertible in existence today.

The BRZ comes with two pieces of CLD on the outed door skin. Each piece is 6x6 inches. One is next to the door handle and the other is behind the speaker. There is no other soundproofing in the door. In this photo, you can see the factory piece in the bottom right corner of the photo. The shinier CLD on the left hand side is Dynamat I added. I added two 12x6 inch pieces to the top of the outer door skin and one 6x6 inch piece behind the speaker.

Time to give the hi-fi a mod with some Dynamat Xtreme to control vibration.

Now, Marantz brings the Dolby Atmos experience home, and the AV8802A features outputs that can be configured for 1 or 2 pairs of overhead speakers and/or add-on Dolby Atmos speaker modules.

The Atmos decoder also features upconversion from conventional surround soundtracks to deliver the ultimate three-dimensional experience with your favorite movies and concerts.

Auro-3D upgrade-ready

Auro-3D® is the next generation three-dimensional audio standard. It provides a realistic sound experience unlike anything before. By fully immersing the listener in a cocoon of life-like sound,

Auro-3D® creates the sensation of actually “being there”. Thanks to a unique 'Height' channel configuration, recorded acoustic reflections are reproduced by these speakers and are heard naturally due to the fact that sounds originate from around as well as above the listener.

Once upgraded with the Auro®- Codec Decoder, the AV8802A is capable of decoding the original Auro-3D® mix and playing back an Auro 10.1 channel configuration (including “Voice of God” channel). The Auro-3D® Upgrade can be purchased for EUR 149.

Advanced Front Soundstage Expansion Modes

In addition, the AV8802A features multiple front soundstage expansion modes.

DTS Neo:X | 11.1 provides additional front height and front width channel options. Audyssey DSX also provides for front height and width channels.

Featuring an advanced video processing section, the AV8802A fully supports next generation 4K Ultra HD high resolution video, along with the latest generation HDMI specification including 4K 50/60Hz pass-through and 4:4:4 Pure Color full color resolution sub-sampling.

The AV8802A can upscale 1080p content to 4K and also upscale and transcode HD and SD analog video sources, so you can connect modern as well as legacy video sources and run just a single HDMI cable to your flat panel TV or projector.

ISFccc Video Calibration Controls

Certified by the Imaging Science Foundation, the AV8802A features a full selection of advanced ISFccc video calibration adjustments that lets a video calibration technician optimize picture quality with any TV or front projector.

8 HDMI Inputs, 3 HDMI Outputs

There are 8 HDMI inputs including 1 conveniently located on the front panel, and 3 HDMI outputs that let you drive 2 different displays in the main room (flat panel and front projector, for example) and another HDMI display in the 2nd zone, and they conform to the latest HDMI specification for 4K Ultra HD compatibility. HDCP 2.2 will be supported via future upgrade (requires hardware modification). The AV8802A also features full HDCP 2.2 compatibility, a requirement for 4K Ultra HD copy-protected content. In addition HDR – High Dynamic Range – and extended colour space by standard BT.2020 are supported.

Audyssey Platinum Suite

With Audyssey MultEQ XT32, you can quickly and easily measure and configure your particular home theater setup for optimum sound quality precisely tailored to your home theater room's acoustics. With 8 measurement points, MultEQ XT32 generates a full set of precision digital filters to deliver the most accurate and natural tonal balance. The AV8802A is also Audyssey Installer Pro ready for even more acoustical calibration accuracy.

Audyssey Dynamic Volume tames large variances in volume levels (such as loud commercials), and Dynamic EQ delivers a full range tonal balance at any volume level. Audyssey LFC (Low Frequency Containment) uses advanced psycho-acoustic algorithms to provide deep bass without annoying neighbors or other family members. Audyssey DSX provides dynamic sound expansion, dramatically expanding the front soundstage via additional front wide, front height or even front wide and front height audio channels.

Exclusive HDAM Technology and Current Feedback

Featuring exclusive Marantz HDAM (Hyper Dynamic Amplifier Module) technology found on our Reference Series components, the AV8802A incorporates multiple HDAM modules which provide superior low noise wideband performance in an all-discrete configuration, compared to conventional op amp ICs. HDAM technology provides an ultra fast slew rate for true wideband response and maximum dynamic range to deliver optimum sound quality with today’s high resolution audio formats.

In addition to HDAM technology, the AV8802A also features Current Feedback instead of the typical voltage feedback configuration. A Marantz innovation introduced on our very first audiophile amplifiers more than 60 years ago, Current Feedback technology provides a wide closed-loop bandwidth and very high slew rate, delivering superior fidelity with wideband audio sources.

Multiple High Resolution Audio Formats Supported

The AV8802A supports a wide range of audio file types, including MP3, WAV, MPEG-4 AAC and WMA. It also supports high resolution audio tracks up to 24-bit/192-kHz including AIFF, ALAC and FLAC formats, and includes gapless playback capability with many file types for uninterrupted listening enjoyment. It also plays 2.8-MHz DSD high resolution audio files (DSD is the advanced high resolution audio coding system for SACD).

Multiple Control Options

The ultimate sleeper street machine, no one would ever expect a TR6 to outrun a Z06!! The perfect blend of American V8 muscle and elegant British styling! Sound familiar, it should, the Shelby Cobra used the same formula to dominate the race tracks of the 60’s. Light weight and nimble British Sport cars upgraded with American V8 power is nothing new, however it is very seldom done with such quality and passion as seen in this car!! Starting with an ultra clean and rust free Texas raised 1976 TR6 Roadster and then completely disassembling it to do a Nut and Bolt, Frame Off Restoration. During the restoration the original 2.5 Liter engine was scrapped and in its place a Ford 5.0 Liter V8 and AOD Automatic transmission were installed! That’s twice the original displacement in a car that already performed well in stock trim!

BODY:

Finished in Starlight Black with removable black hardtop. The paint and body are amazing and very well done. Modifications to the exterior are limited. The only sign that this car packs a wicked punch are the custom TR 5.0 decals on the rear quarters and wheel center caps. All new chrome and stainless trim. All new lights and lenses. All new weather stripping and seals. New wiring. Refinished original wheels with new center caps, new trim rings and new Michelin Redline Tires.

INTERIOR:

The Tan leather interior is in excellent condition. The custom adjustable leather seats offer plenty of support and comfort yet hold you in place under spirited driving. The interior was lined with dynamat heat & sound insulation prior to the new carpet and side panels being installed. The original wood dash was refinished and modified to accept the new Stewart Warner gauges. Air conditioning and Heat have been installed and work wonderfully with defrost, dash vent, and floor operations at your fingertips. Lokar Shifter and throttle cables make controlling the car easy and safe! Seat Belts. Remarkable stereo system. Clarion AM/FM/CD Head unit in trunk with remote control panel mounted in front of shifter. Clarion 6CD changer, MTX Amplifier, Polk Audio Tweeters, Speakers and Subwoofer make sure you can always hear the music with the top down at highway speeds. Fully carpeted trunk area houses battery and audio system, along with matching full size spare tire.

ENGINE AND SUSPENSION:

This car only has 4,075 miles on it since the build. All bugs have been worked out over those miles. This engine swap was done with the utmost care and forethought! Very well engineered and professional quality fabrication throughout the vehicle! The front frame and suspension were reinforced as was the rear suspension. SPAX shocks with adjustable dampers, and large diameter sway bars front and rear further complement the Triumphs already impressive stock suspension. Every thing on this car was rebuilt, restored or replaced with better performing items! Power Disc brakes and rack & pinion steering make driving a comfortable pleasure. The 302ci Ford V8 and AOD transmission were rebuilt with upgrades including; Polished March Serpentine belt drive system, Edelbrock Performer intake, Holley 4bbl Carburetor with electric choke, Pertronic Ignition, Jet Coated exhaust manifolds, remote oil filter, finned aluminum Cobra air cleaner and Cobra Valve covers, stainless steel braided lines, polished alternator and air conditioning pump. Keeping the engine cool is a large aluminum radiator with 2 electric cooling fans. Hand formed true dual exhaust with resonators and stock looking Monza mufflers at the rear sound amazing.

Experience the ultimate in home theater enjoyment with the Marantz AV8802A network A/V surround processor/pre-amp/tuner, which combines advanced DSP and DAC technologies along with exclusive Marantz innovations such as HDAM and Current Feedback.

Enjoy the ultimate in cinematic surround sound with Dolby Atmos, the most advanced motion picture surround sound system ever developed. Dolby Atmos features object-based soundspace creation and reproduction, with the ability to place sound elements with pinpoint precision via front, side and surround speakers along with overhead speakers or up-firing Dolby Atmos enabled speakers.

You'll enjoy a whole new world of content thanks to the many built-in network features, which includes Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless connectivity, and support for internet radio along with subscription streaming services including Spotify Connect.

Dolby Atmos

Introduced in premium cinemas in 2012, Dolby Atmos has become the de facto standard for enveloping and immersive motion picture sound, and features the ability to dramatically expand the dimensional sound experience through the use of multiple overhead loudspeakers that can be individually addressed, to allow pinpoint acoustical imaging at precise locations within the room. Since its introduction, Dolby Atmos has been embraced by award-winning directors, sound designers and soundtrack mixers, and many recent blockbuster movies feature soundtracks mastered in Dolby Atmos.

Advanced Wireless Networking with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi

Stream your favorite audio tracks wirelessly to the AV8802A thanks to the built-in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi (b/g/n) wireless functions. Equipped with dual Bluetooth/Wi-Fi antennas, the AV8802A lets you enjoy wireless streaming from your smartphone, tablet and portable music player.

Via the Wi-Fi or LAN connection to your home network, the AV8802A opens up a whole world of streaming audio capabilities, letting you listen to any of thousands of internet radio stations. You can also enjoy streaming music from subscription services including SiriusXM and Pandora and listen to Spotify via the Spotify Connect app on your smart device.

The AV8802A is also equipped with Apple AirPlay, so you can stream wirelessly from your iPod touch, iPhone and iPad.

You can also connect the AV8802A directly to your home network via the wired RJ-45 LAN connection, and there's a convenient front panel USB port for direct connection and charging to your iPod, iPod touch, iPhone and iPad, and connection to a portable USB device.

4K Ultra HD Video Processing; 4K 50/60Hz Pass-through; 4:4:4 Pure Color

In addition to easy operation with the supplied ergonomically-designed remote control, the AV8802 features additional control capabilities. There's an RS-232C serial port for direct connection to external automation equipment.

The Marantz app (available in iOS and Android versions) lets you operate the AV8802A from your favorite device, such as a smartphone and tablet.

You can also operate the AV8802A via web connection - open your favorite browser and easily control and configure the AV8802A, even when you're not at home.

Audyssey DSX (Dynamic Surround Expansion) lets you add a pair of front wide or front height speakers to your 5.1 speaker system to expand the front soundstage turning your room into a giant home theater space.

32-bit D/A Conversion on All Channels; Balanced XLR Input and Outputs

Featuring premium grade AK4490 32-bit DACs on all channels, the AV8802A

also features XLR input and outputs. There's a balanced XLR stereo input that's assignable as well as 15 balanced XLR outputs, which includes the 2 subwoofer outputs and front height/width and overhead channels.

This extensive balanced XLR compatibility ensures top performance in the home as well as the studio, especially when there are long cable runs between the AV8802 and power amplifiers situated elsewhere. 19 pre-outs (RCA jacks) provide additional compatibility with multiple power amplifier types.

3 Zone/3 Source Advanced Multi-room Capability

Enjoy your favorite movie or music in the main room, while others can enjoy listening to 2 different sources in other rooms. The Zone 2 and Zone 3 pre-amp outputs both feature variable level controls.

Easy To Setup, Easy To Use

The AV8802A comes with a Quick Setup guide, and has an intuitive on-screen Setup Assistant that will have your system fully configured with a minimum of fuss and bother. You can even control the setup via your PC's web browser or use our available Marantz Remote app with your favorite smart device.

Advanced Wireless Networking with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi

HDCP 2.2 will be supported via future upgrade (requires hardware modification). The AV8802A also features full HDCP 2.2 compatibility, a requirement for 4K Ultra HD copy-protected content. Audyssey LFC (Low Frequency Containment) uses advanced psycho-acoustic algorithms to provide deep bass without annoying neighbors or other family members. Audyssey DSX provides dynamic sound expansion, dramatically expanding the front soundstage via additional front wide, front height or even front wide and front height audio channels.

You can also operate the AV8802A via web connection - open your favorite browser and easily control and configure the AV8802A, even when you're not at home.

also features XLR input and outputs.
