Holland 1 (or HM submarine Torpedo Boat No 1) was the first submarine commissioned by the Royal Navy, the first in a six-boat batch of the Holland class submarine. She was lost in 1913 while under tow to the scrapyard following decommissioning, and recovered in 1982 and was put on display at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum, Gosport.

History

In 1901 she was ordered from John Philip Holland and built at Barrow-in-Furness. The keel was laid down 4 February 1901. In order to keep the boat’s construction secret, she was assembled in a building labelled "Yacht Shed", and the parts that had to be fabricated in the general yard were marked for "pontoon no 1". She was launched on 2 October 1901 and dived for the first time (in an enclosed basin) on 20 March 1902. Sea trials began in April 1902.

In September 1902 she arrived at Portsmouth with the other completed Holland boat and along with HMS Hazard (their floating submarine base) made up the "First Submarine Flotilla", commanded by Captain Reginald Bacon. Recognizing how dangerous the new submarines could be, he proceeded cautiously with training his small band of volunteer officers and men. There were accidents and disappointments, but just a few months later Captain Bacon reported that:

"Even these Little Boats would be a terror to any ship attempting to remain or pass near a harbour holding them". On 3 March 1903 Holland 1 suffered an explosion that caused four injuries.

On 24 October 1905, with the rest of the Holland fleet and three A-class boats, HMS Holland 1 sailed from Portsmouth to attack a Russian fleet that had mistakenly sunk a number of British fishing vessels in the North Sea. The boats were recalled before any attack could take place.

The submarine was decommissioned and sold in 1913 to T W Ward (limited) for £410. By the time the submarine was sold she was considered so obsolete that she was sold with all fittings intact, and the only requirement put on the purchaser was that the torpedo tube be put out of action.

While being towed to the scrapyard Holland 1 encountered very severe weather and sank about a mile and a half off Eddystone lighthouse. No one was on board the submarine at the time, and, since the submarine had been seen to be sinking earlier in the journey, the crew of the tug were ready to release to the tow rope, preventing any damage to the tug.

Dutch Sky, Tiengemeten.

Tiengemeten is an island in the Dutch province of South Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Korendijk, and lies about 11 km south of Spijkenisse.

On 10 May 2007, the island was officially given back to nature; its farming inhabitants were relocated and nature has been allowed to work its way undisturbed. New nature reserves are rare in the Netherlands, and since its return to nature, Tiengemeten has become a real wilderness with trackless terrain, flowing creeks and gullies, meadows full of flowers and huge populations of migrating birds, including ospreys and egrets. Some of the marshy pastures are grazed by Highland cattle and other hardy animals. The island has cycle paths and tracks, and also a large earthwork which serves well as an elevated outlook post for birdspotters. Tiengemeten is free of cars and accessible only by water via a small pedestrian- and bike-friendly ferry which runs regularly on the ten-minute crossing between the small port at Nieuwendijk and the island. Alternatively, bikes can be hired on the island, particularly during the summer months. There is ample free car parking at the ferry terminal. Once on the island, Margerita Farm is a short walk from where passengers alight from the ferry, and holds an information centre, gallery space, café and toilets. Walking tours are available, and volunteers are on hand to answer questions. There are regular special nature-related events on the island; biodiversity surveys, open days and special tours. Notices are posted in local press and on websites.

Holland Park is a London Underground station. On the Central Line, it lies between Shepherd's Bush and Notting Hill Gate stations.

The original building was typical of those designed by Harry Bell Measures for the stations of the Central London Railway that opened on 30 July 1900. It was given a flat roof in the hope that commercial development would take place on top, as at Queensway station, but so far this has not happened. The building was refurbished in the 1990s.

The Holland Harbor Lighthouse in Holland, MI (1907). Residents of Holland long realized that Lake Macatawa would be an excellent harbor, but it wasn't until the 1850s that the residents personally dug the channel between the lake and Lake Michigan after Congress rejected their request to connect the two. The connection of the two lakes bolstered Holland's economy, both for manufacutring and tourism. Congress approved a lighthouse in 1870, built in 1872. In 1907, the present lighthouse was constructed with a steel tower. The gabled roofs were designed to reflect the dutch heritage in the area. It was automated in 1932 and painted red in 1956. The Coast Guard recommended that it be abandoned in 1970, but Holland citizens were able to petition to rescue it.

Maria Koppers and Simon André - The Firebird, 1967. Another ballet having belonged to the repertory of the Nederlands Ballet first. The original production of Fokine's 'The Firebird' premiered in 1909, with the Ballets Russes. In this retelling, the magical being is caught by Ivan Czarevich while stealing golden apples in Kotscheï the Immortal's enchanted garden. Upon the bird's release she gives the Czarevich a magical feather, a wave of which will ensure her coming to his aid. Maria Koppers' Firebird has been called majestic by the critics and her arm movements, ranging from nervous wing flapping after being captured, to the lyricism with which she compels the evil spirits to sleep in the Berceuse were extraordinary.
