Gouda's 15th-century town hall (1449–1459).

The Market Square (Markt) is the heart of the city's activity. The main shopping street passes through the north-western side of the square, and market is still held several days per week. The square is dominated by the splendid Gothic town hall (stadhuis), built between 1448 and 1450.

Dutch elm disease was introduced into Canada around 1940. The fungus causes a vascular wilt that results in browning of the foliage and kills affected trees. Because their sap supply is cut off and fungal toxins poison them, the affected parts of the tree wilt and eventually die; this process can take a few days or a few years. The fungus develops in the sap-conducting tissues of elm trees, under the bark. The first symptoms of the disease generally appear between mid-June and mid-July. The leaves of affected branches wilt, curl up and dry out, while turning yellowish or brownish, but they usually remain on the tree. If the infection occurs later in the season, premature leaf drop usually follows the wilting. When an infected branch is cut, a ring-shaped brownish vascular discoloration can be seen. The exposed wood beneath the bark has numerous brown streaks. The disease is transmitted by bark beetles. These insects dig galleries beneath the bark of weakened trees where they can reproduce. Once spring arrives, the bark beetles, which have in the meantime become covered by spores from the causal fungus, migrate toward healthy trees and begin feeding. The beetles thus contaminate new hosts and spread the disease. A new, more aggressive disease, Ophiostoma novo-ulmi, has resulted from natural mutation of the former disease. This disease has spread from the American Midwest and replaced the disease introduced in the 1940s.

Can you shoot the Milky Way in Holland? YES you can! This was taken a few weeks ago at the Dutch Veluwe at 3:30 AM. New moon and a clear sky, perfect conditions. This is one of the darkest places in the Netherlands except for the Islands up north. I already planned to shoot here for a while and last night I finally did it. Not dissapointed with the result! The milkyway beautifully stretches along the sky, just a little bit above the light pollution.

Captured these wind turbines on our way to Amsterdam earlier this year. They were towering over a colorful tulip field.

I was on a long walk back to the car with thoughts of dinner on my mind. Suddenly, out of the corner of my eye a spark of a vision of this scene caught my eye. Turning for a good look, my imagination immediately created a mental “print” that I knew I could work from.

The foreground elements together with an approaching rainstorm that created a stillness to the air, it was an image in the making. Thoughts of dinner were quickly forgotten as I set my camera bag down and went to work framing up what nature and humans had provided.
