Spent Christmas day last year at Palo Duro Canyon in West Texas. I later learned that this is the biggest canyon in the US after the Grand Canyon

Palo Duro Canyon Texas State Park
The Texas Panhandle (northern-most part of the state) is as flat as Kansas...and that's really flat; yet somehow in the middle of this vast expanse of flatness is the second largest canyon system in the United States, the colorful and surprisingly beautiful Palo Duro Canyon.
"The Grand Canyon of Texas" is 120 miles long, up to 20 miles wide, and up to 800 feet deep. While not as impressive as the actual Grand Canyon in Arizona, it is well worth the visit, especially if you are anywhere near Amarillo. Spanish explorers gave it the name Palo Duro which means "hard wood", a reference to the Rocky Mountain juniper trees that still grow in the canyon (though what you see here are Red Berry Junipers and a lone and very dead Mesquite tree in the center right).
People have inhabited Palo Duro Canyon for about 12,000 years. The Clovis and Folsom peoples first lived in the canyon and hunted large herds of mammoth and giant bison here. Later, other cultures flourished such as the Apache, Comanche and Kiowa. It's now a State Park, with very good facilities, campgrounds, horseback riding and lots of hiking and biking trails.
Here at Capital Mesa on the Lighthouse Trail, you can see the incredible colors of the four geologic layers that formed in the canyon over a period of about one million years. The formations vary and include hoodoos and a few caves. Weather is a factor for erosion; average rainfall is a surprising 20 inches, while average temperatures range from 20˚F in January to 95˚F in July.
I only had time for one day here as I was driving through Texas on my way to Colorado, but I wish I could have stayed to do some astrophotography that night; the park is Bortle scale 1 when facing anywhere but Northwest (toward Amarillo). Unfortunately instead, I got a flat tire later that night and at the same time a dead battery, and when I finally got back on the highway again, took a rock to my windshield as well. But on the way out of the park at sunset, I did happen to see about an 8 inch tarantula crossing the road, so there's that memory...

Here are some little known, very interesting facts about Texas .
1. Beaumont to El Paso: 742 miles
2. Beaumont to Chicago: 770 miles
3. El Paso is closer to California than to Dallas
Best viewed large.
Went to Amarillo to do some shopping and had a little extra time to spare. Had never been to Palo Duro Canyon so took a little side trip and scoped it out. It was extremely hot and we didn't get to do any hiking. We enjoyed the views and look forward to going back.

They say if you were to stack Palo Duro Canyon on top of the Grand Canyon you would have a complete record of geologic time.
It is the second largest canyon in the United States and largely contained within a Texas State Park. Georgia O'Keeffe taught art at the local college between 1916 and 1918. Many of her paintings depict the red landscapes.
My friend, Don took me to the Humane Society to help him pick out a cat to keep his kitten, Della company. We both fell in love with Duro. He is 7 years old and from what we could tell, has had an incredibly rough life. Duro was brought to the shelter with serious bite wounds on his neck and stomach. I've cleaned up this photo to present Duro as I hope he will look one day. This poor boy is kind of a mess right now. He desperately wants affection but is afraid to reach out for it. He has issues with allergies and his right eye is dark looking. His eyes don't seem to focus together a lot of the time, and he will lash out when we make sudden movements. My guess is that he sees "shadows" and becomes fearful of the sudden movements.
Della picked on Duro at first, and now he is showing a dominant streak and is scaring her! They are tolerating each other but Duro isn't the companion for Della that Don was hoping for. I seem to have made progress with him and hope to bring out more of the sweet side this kitty has when he's not afraid someone is going to hurt him.
I had a customer come in my store the other day who spoke Spanish. While speaking to a family member, I heard her say "duro". We looked up the word in Spanish and found it meant hard, harsh or tough. Whoever named him thought he was a mean old cat. He has a gentle side, but we don't know if he will ever give in to it.

Palo Duro Canyon, about 25 miles (40 km) from downtown Amarillo, TX, is the second largest canyon in the United States after the Grand Canyon in Arizona. At its deepest, Palo Duro is almost 1000 feet (300 m) deep, and it is about 120 miles (190 km) long. It was formed by erosion by the Prairie Dog Town Fork of the Red River. The Quartermaster formation lies at the bottom of the canyon and is of Permian age, or around 350 million years. It provides the red sediments seen here.
