The Watkin's Wing of Kingston General hospital holds two historical facts, the first is that it is the original building for Kingston General Hospital, second is that it is the first Parliament Building for the United Province of Canada. When Kingston was selected at the new Province's first capital city there was no building to house the Parliament. While construction started on a grand building in the downtown core, Parliament sat here. Today it remains the historical core of the General Hospital.

Designed and commissioned in 1841 as the Parliament Buildings for the United Province of Canada. The grand design of the Kingston City Hall fell to George Browne, and is considered his best work. The size and scale of the building is thanks to a fire that destroyed much of downtown Kingston in 1840. The cornerstone laid in 1843 and construction completed in 1844. However, the building never saw use as home to the Provincial Parliament as they had moved by this point to Montreal, Quebec. Extensive renovations were completed from 1966 to 1973, and it hold a Historical Designation.

In response to the multiple incursions through 1838 on the western regions of Upper Canada, the British army did a complete rebuild of Fort Malden. Heavy artillery batteries, two-story barracks, guard houses, cook houses, and officer quarters were all constructed. And the earthworks rebuilt higher than before. However, by 1859 the fort was again abandoned and turned into an asylum. The Malden Lunatic Asylum constructed a single new building on the site but closed in 1875. After which the land was parcelled and sold off to private owners, as were many of the buildings some of which still stand today in the town of Amherstburg. The site was turned into a living history museum in 1935. Pictured here is one of the restored artillery batteries.

While dedicated to the famous War of 1812 general, Sir Isaac Brock. The original monument, consisted of a single Tuscan column about 41 meters high on Queenston Heights. Dedicated in 1823 and completed in 1828 the monument provided a tomb for the General's remains as a reminder of his actions in saving Upper Canada at Detroit and Queenston Heights. However, the monument could be seen as a symbol of British opperssion and became the focus of a post-rebellion act of terror. On the 17th of April 1840 an explosive charge damaged the monument beyond repair. The act was laid at the feet of Benjamin Lett, who would later be acquitted of the charge. The grander, second monument saw construction begin in 1853 and was completed in 1859. The moment was dedicated in 1860 by the Prince of Wales, the future Edward VII.

Built in 1832, Alwington House was originally the home of Charles le Moyne de Longueuil, Baron de Longueuil, however, when Kingston was declared the capital of the Province of Canada, the Baron gladly sold his home to serve as the residence of the Governor. Three governors occupied the residence until the capital moved to Montreal in 1844. It continued to serve as a private home until fire destroyed it in 1953. The current home, built in 1963 on the original location. The retaining wall and fountain are original to Alwington House. You can see the retaining wall here, which marked the foundation of the original home.
