The Puja pandals of the city had always been a treat to watch. The beauty of these majestic pandals provide a sensory treat to art and heritage lovers.
Although all the pandals of the city are being constructed with utmost grandeur and effort but every one of them come with their distinct theme. These pandals have different themes this year. These pandals are being given a palanquin look and inspired by the ancient traditions. The craftsmen are giving final touches to the pandals, using bamboo, plywood, cloth and jute. The internal part of these structures is richly decorated with figures of Ganesha and apsaras.
This Durgapuja pandal has tried to replicate the Hawa Mahal which is a palace in the city of Jaipur, Rajasthan, India. Built from red and pink sandstone, it is on the edge of the City Palace, Jaipur.
The idol-making process begins with crafting a sturdy bamboo and straw frame called the kathamo that can support the weight of clay. clay is then put layer by layer.Straw binds the structure together and forms the foundation for base layers.
This time period is when the lives of these artisans and that of the idols they are creating become deeply intertwined. The artisans live, work and perform their daily chores around their clay idols-in-waiting in the same workshop. They live, cook, eat and inhabit the same space as their creations. Their hands are perpetually covered in clay. It is not unusual to see everyday items they use kept casually, or carefully, around their work in progress… a gamchha left to dry or to protect the clay, a cup of tea perched at the feet of an idol, or a table fan to cool the clay and the artisan.

Agomoni - A warm welcome to the mother
Recently, I was asked by one of my foreign colleagues about the number of festivals in India (specially from Bengal). I smiled and answered to him "we have 13 festivals occurring in twelve months and each one of them has a significance of it's own. Perhaps the biggest celebration that we have in Bengal is 'The Autumn Festival' - organized to welcome the season on a spiritual thought." Having said that, I do feel that the most beautiful part of this celebration is the preparation phase of this festival and that is no way less than the festival itself in terms of excitement. It gives me (and I hope most of the people from Bengal like me) an immense pleasure to think of the days when we start the countdown towards the D-day. I always feel a sort of fulfillment in my heart of welcoming someone very near to me.
