My 6th attempt at star trails, 4 hours worth of shots going into the moonrise, which lit the landscape and sky. A brighter moon than I have tried before, about 63% brightness. This is the Cazneaux Tree, famously photographed as 'The Spirit Of Endurance' in 1937 and exhibited around the world. The tree is near (but not in) a creek with a clear view to the formations of Wilpena Pound, South Australia, in the background. I thought I was going to get shot at before I started taking the frames for this as a vehicle got relatively close and appeared to be 'spot-lighting' or hunting with a spot light. Fortunately there was practically no wind in the duration of the frames to move the leaves on the tree! The frames were combined in a lighten blend of layers in Photoshop, daylight white balance to show the true colour of the stars. The small streak to the right of the tree is probably a geosynchronous satellite.

Mount Kailash itself is known in the Tibetan language as Gang Ti-se and informally as Gang Rinpoche ("Precious Snow Mountain"), to the Bon as Yungdrung Gutsek ("Nine stacked Svastikas"). Though only 6714 m high, it stands quite alone like a great white sentinel guarding the main routes into Tibet from India and Nepal in the south and west.
Traditionally a pilgrim undertakes the 52-km trekking cirquit or circumambulation (khorlam) around Mount Kailash commencing at Darchen (4575 m) and crossing the 5630 m Dolma La pass on the second day of the three-day walk. This is followed by a trek of the same duration around the beautiful turquiose Lake Manasarovar known in the Tibetan language as Mapham Yutso མ་ཕམ་གཡུ་མཚོ།

The Patriot my uncle, career US Army, the picture was taken in Panama before WW2 started, he was lucky to be sent back to the US to train troops for the duration of the war, he was a very sharp soldier, he made Master Sargent and retained that rank for all of his career, one hell of a guy.

This shot was taken off the east coast of Tasmania outside a town called Bicheno. The blue colours are as you see them here. The crashing of the ocean on the small rocky outcrop is constant. Almost hypnotising when watching, as the trees and shore rocks could attest to if they could talk in the human language.
The rocks are shaped by powerful Southern Ocean waves acting on the hard volcanic rocks (dolerite or granite) creating these iconic rugged seascapes, and isolated rock features. Myself, I found the crashing every few secs/mins fascinating and stayed for quite a while until deciding to see a blowhole up the way.

For the duration I saw them, they remained very close to one another, so I couldn't get individual shots of each. The male Cinnamon Teal is one of the most striking birds that migrate to Alberta for the summer.

I'm on a quest to document how many different birds I see while out and about. These aren't Nat Geo quality shots necessarily, just records of what I see. By different, I mean the different species, of course, but also the males and females of a species if they are substantially different. Also, if a species has major /obvious colour variations, I'll count them as 'different' as well.

I wanted to try some longer duration shots but I didn't take my full filter set with me to Homer this time - swift kick to self! I did happen to have a circular ND filter as part of my kit, so I gave it a try. I ended up only being able to expose for 20 seconds as any more would have overexposed the image. Even so, I was pleased with the interesting effect it produced both in smoothing the waters of Kachemak Bay as well as making the fisherman look like a ghost. He also spent some time near the chair, giving a lighter ghost image there. In a way this represents a metaphor for us, we're just a blip on the radar. Here today, gone tomorrow!
