Enamel on Wedgwood biscuit earthenware
By experimenting with the unusual technique of applying enamel to earthenware, then firing it to produce a finished ceramic plaque, George Stubbs hoped to make paintings for the ages, as durable as stone. These plaques were part of a collaboration with the master potter Josiah Wedgwood, who jokingly referred to himself as Stubbs’s “canvas maker.” This scene of wheat harvesting, which Stubbs developed in earlier oil paintings, shows his taste for orderly, relief-like composition. Reapers also gives an idealized view of agricultural labor in a period when farm workers experienced widespread poverty and hardship. The three men and one woman who cut and gather the wheat are neatly—even fashionably—dressed, and their movements are graceful and seemingly effortless. The presence of the church in the background brings to mind the Christian associations of the harvest and the old Latin proverb “laborare est orare” (to work is to pray—and vice versa).

Installation of the Long Gallery is now complete! In this space—beloved to many of our visitors—you can wander around all seven of the twenty-foot-square bays and encounter 200 paintings and five sculptures, primarily from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
Originally called the Study Gallery, this space on the south side of the fourth floor was designed to allow students and scholars to engage with artworks that otherwise would have been in storage. It was renamed the Long Gallery in 1998 and is now accessible to all. The works are densely hung, with each wall dedicated to a specific theme.
“The Long Gallery is a special place to encounter art,” says Edward Town, Assistant Curator of Paintings and Sculpture. “In the new hang, we have added partition walls along the south side of the gallery, giving us considerably more space to showcase areas of depth in the collection. This means we can share more themes, create new connections, and increase the potential for teaching and learning in this remarkable space.”

Her glowing sculptural installation, with yellow neon lighting proclaiming in script “I loved you until the morning” on a mirrored wall in the museum’s entrance court, is visible from the street. It serves as an “invitation” at the front door, said Martina Droth, the center’s director, who was appointed in January after working with its collections for 16 years, most recently as chief curator."

One of the museum's greatest treasures is the building itself. Opened to the public in 1977, the Yale Center for British Art is the last building designed by the internationally acclaimed American architect Louis I. Kahn. The YCBA’s exterior of matte steel and reflective glass confers a monumental presence in downtown New Haven. The geometrical four-floor interior is designed around two interior courtyards and is comprised of a restrained palette of natural materials including travertine marble, white oak, concrete, and Belgian linen. Kahn succeeded in creating intimate galleries where one can view objects in diffused natural light. He wanted to allow in as much daylight as possible, with artificial illumination used only on dark days or in the evening. The building’s design, materials, and skylit rooms combine to provide an environment for the works of art that is simple and dignified.
