Built for durability versus beauty, the old fog alert station beneath the Golden Gate Bridge has stood stoically guarding the entrance to the San Francisco Bay since the 19th century. Still, there is a certain Sheng Fui about it me thinks--as the old stone building has gradually become one with its surrounding environment.

This ball lasted over 13 years and survived many catches, throws and the occasional chews. Had to place it in the snow in memory of my best friend, who loved trying to find it in the winter, especially.

The qualities that I think get underestimated quite often are durability and tenacity and a willingness to just keep at it. Time spent behind the camera is just phenomenally important.

The Mulungu-do-litoral (Erythrina speciosa), also known as Mulungu or Eritrina-candelabrum, is a tree 3 to 5 meters tall.

One of the most beautiful Brazilian trees, the Mulungu-do-litoral, presents a chandelier-shaped inflorescence, composed of bright red flowers, very attractive for hummingbirds. The trunk is prickly and the wood is light, soft and not very durable.

The leaves are large, shaped like a rhombus and fall in the winter, so the tree remains devoid of foliage during flowering. Flowering occurs in late winter and early spring.

Native to the Atlantic Forest (Brazil), she appreciates the humidity, vegetating well in swampy terrain, along rivers and on the coast. It has an excellent landscape effect, because in addition to its singular beauty, it produces good shade in the summer and allows the passage of light in the winter.

For thousands of years, Aboriginal rock carvings have survived because of the durable qualities of the sandstone that lies up to 6km deep beneath the Sydney Harbour, Australia.

The story of Barangaroo Reserve’s sandstone foreshore is one of unique design, engineering and landscape achievements in the history of Australia.

It’s a tale of traditional craftsmanship, industrial know-how, ground-breaking initiative, and teamwork at its finest.

More than 10,000 sandstone blocks were used to create the extraordinary headland park on the city’s doorstep.

93 per cent of the blocks came from Barangaroo itself, painstakingly extracted from beneath what is now the Cutaway, the Reserve’s massive cultural space.

26th October 2015 - A night time view of the historic Princes Dock in Liverpool (My office on the left..).

Princes Dock is mentioned in the novel Redburn, His First Voyage by Herman Melville (1849):

"In magnitude, cost and durability the docks of Liverpool surpass all others in the world... for miles you may walk along that riverside, passing dock after dock, like a chain of immense fortresses. Prince's Dock, of comparatively recent construction, is perhaps the largest of all and is well known to American sailors from the fact that it is mostly frequented by the American shipping."

It is also were the vast majority of American GI's first stepped foot onto English soil during the second world war. Princes Dock has long been known as an American shipping dock which has certain connotations for me as I work for an American shipping company that is based (at present) on that same dock.

All the men, aircraft, tanks and artillery not to mention the vast amounts of supplies to keep them all running came through this very dock in the early stages of the American participation of World War II.

For a magazine I made this photo. It stands for durability and being economical. It was great fun to make this. I had to "snitch" some coins out of the piggy bank of my daughter though hahaha! Hope you like it.

Durable, forever.

Huon pine is an extremely durable wood. That is why it was prized in the 19th century for ship building. It was (and still is) very plentiful on the south west coast of Tasmania. In fact a number of early 19th century sailing ships were constructed in Macquarie Harbour on the west coast. Today, it is better known as a preferred timber for expensive furniture.

Mack Trucks was founded in 1900 by Jack and Gus Mack in Brooklyn, NY, and was originally known as the Mack Brothers Company. The Mack brothers actually entered the vehicle manufacturing business seven years earlier, when they purchased the Fallesen and Berry carriage company. The company produced its first successful motorized vehicle in 1900. In 1905, the company moved its headquarters to Allentown, PA. In 2010, Mack headquarters relocated to Greensboro, NC. The company adopted its present name, Mack Trucks, Inc., in 1922.

The company's trademark is the Bulldog. Mack trucks earned this nickname in 1917, during World War I, when the British government purchased the Mack AC model to supply its front lines with troops, food and equipment. British soldiers dubbed the truck the Bulldog Mack. Its pugnacious, blunt-nosed hood, coupled with its incredible durability, reminded the soldiers of the tenacious qualities of their country's mascot, the British Bulldog.

The Cyclamen, a symbol of sincere and lasting love

According to one of the many legends surrounding this delicate flower, King Solomon wore a crown of cyclamen buds. But when the Jews were deported to Babylon, the flowers bowed, saying, "When a son of David ascends the throne again and the crown returns to Jerusalem, we will lift up our heads." In ancient times and in the Middle Ages, this tuberous plant was believed to facilitate childbirth, and several superstitions also accused it of causing miscarriages. Since the Renaissance, this graceful flower, modestly leaning forward, has also become a symbol of sincere and enduring love.

Nowadays, it embodies the quintessential love feeling in Japan, just like the rose in the West. Graphic, with purple or white petals that stand out nicely against thick dark leaves, cyclamen has also been a great inspiration to artists. In religious scenes, Flemish painters drew them to represent the enduring love of Christ. Leonardo da Vinci also dotted the margins of his manuscripts with his corollas.

Whilst no archaeological material was found in the durable, mineral and easy-to-clean interior, objects from the Chalcolithique (4,720-4,220 ybp) have been found around the site. The lower menhir may be from anywhere between 6,000 and 4,500 ybp and that whole transitional period from the end of the Neolithic into the first ages of metal looks to be valid for this site.

The cavity is 3.20 x 2.30 x 1.90 m The entrance hole is 70 cm in diameter. The outside rim is around 10 cm wide. The rock is granit and the cavity a clean cul-de-sac, so from my understanding must be considered as man made. There seem to be basins above the site and a 2.18 m high menhir stands 30m below on the same 'path'.

Unlike some of the troglodyte sepultures from a broadly similar period in Sardinia, the interior space is curved like a large bowl and, apart from the concentric entrance rim, has no lines of form or structure.

With the menhir close-by, one must expect the area to have been frequented and the great effort to make this cavity cannot have been for the creation of a secret place to hide people or objects - the outcrop is far too dominant.

Describing the acoustic qualities needs to tip from correlation to causation in that the acoustics were the aim of the site and not a by product. Why here? What is it about this section of landscape? ...

The "Lock Step" ( The Rockefeller Foundation ) outlines a scenario of authoritarian control in the wake of a hypothetical novel influenza pandemic similar to COVID-19.(anno 2010)

We concluderen daarom: Samen zweren is pas fijn!

Researcher and author Niki Friedrich Raapana accidentally stumbled into a pilot programme of the UN's ultimate agenda back in 1999, in Seattle. In her search for answers she found that the consortium of players, stakeholders and prime movers had one thing in common: jargon !

e.g. 'Sustainable Development' is a term we are all familiar with by now and there are many others. Tracing the terminology she was able to find an entire system which had infiltrated our governments and was rewriting state policies and objectives. The European Union was founded upon these principles. Anyone notice what happened to the once nation states that make up the EU? (They're all dead.)

Tracing the terminology to find an entire system which had infiltrated our governments and was rewriting state policies and objectives. Civil and individual rights and freedoms are abolished and the life becomes micromanaged.

Jan Theuninck has been painting the evolution of Western totalitarianism for 20 years - he saw the evolution within the political spectrum where the socialist parties were lost (Fagospatose, 2001) in the Third Way (The third way is no way, 2004) movement of Clinton , Blair and Schröder with which they gave a face to communitarianism of the New World Order. He has often compared the latter to a new kind of National Socialism. His attention has always been fixed thanks to the more than 50 years of misery with blackmail games of the services and torture practices with chemical and energy weapons (Beyond the limit, 2001, Rinascimento, 2009, The culture of learned helplessness, 2011, Neostasi, 2012, Derailed system , 2012, The banality of Evil, 2013, Zersetzung, 2014, ils nous tiennent, 2015, Submission, 2015, Threat, 2016, Utopia, 2016, Conformity, 2017, Brainwashing, 2018, Warnung, 2019, Dein Kampf, 2019, Censorship, 2020, Post-truth society, 2020 and in 2021: Political Pandemic, New World Order, The Great Reset, Angel Vaccine, Aryan Corona Passport, Cytokine Storm, Back from never been away, Sustainable Dictatorship.

A brick with, for British viewers at least, a familiar name. There is a helpful article, published by the Northern Echo, giving a little history of the brick, made by Stanley Brothers and identifying other users of the "trademark" (a manufacturer of bitumen roofing felt and, from 1929, the London Rubber Company). Warning; the Northern Echo page is hopelessly infected with advertisements, all meaningless.

In 1901, the Laurel Mercantile Co. opened in downtown Laurel and was a bastion of commerce in our city, supplying dry goods and work wares until the 1930s. As industry changed, so did the needs and eventually the doors closed. Many decades have passed and “The City Beautiful” is seeing a revival as a haven for entrepreneurs, artists, and makers. In 2016 a partnership was formed between Erin & Ben Napier, Emily & Josh Nowell, and Mallorie & Jim Rasberry, 3 couples made up of family and long-time best friends. They used their combined expertise in history, design, historic preservation, organizational management, finance and accounting to reopen Laurel’s bygone hometown store. The doors of the new Laurel Mercantile Co. opened on Front Street in December 2016. LMCo. is the only place to find our signature collection including Scotsman Co., the store’s flagship brand of Ben’s handmade reclaimed furniture and gentlemen’s workwear, American-made heirloom wares and durable goods for home and life.

The bridge, planned by the French colonial power in 1899-1902 and built mainly by the Vietnamese among numerous victims, is almost 1.7 km long and has only been allowed for mopeds and pedestrians for many years. The traffic dictates, especially during rush hour, the wearing of a mask or a durable device... crossing the bridge on foot is an adventure in every way.

An attractive and durable plant, Tradescantia pallida ’Purpurea' (Purple Heart) is a popular trailing evergreen perennial noted for its remarkable foliage of narrow, pointed, purple leaves, 2-5 in. long (5-12 cm). Arranged alternately along thick, but fragile, purple stems, the leaves are deep royal purple above, and bright violet underneath. Blooming constantly during warm weather with small clusters of bright pink, 3-petalled, pale orchid-pink flowers. 1 in. (2.5 cm), emerge at the stem tips. Tradescantia pallida is a tender perennial which makes a beautiful groundcover. Its sprawling stems root in the moist soil, to create a carpet of ground-hugging foliage. Evergreen in frost-free areas, it dies back with mild freezes, but sprouts back in spring. In colder areas, it may be grown as a bedding annual, in a container or hanging basket, or as a houseplant.

THE MAN WITH TWO HATS

The National Canadian War Memorial in Apeldoorn is called 'The Man with Two Hats'. Ottawa, Canada, has an identical statue symbolising the solidarity between the two countries. The two hats represent war and peace, repression and freedom, life and death, sadness and joy. In fact, many Dutch people regard the Canadians as the true liberators of the Netherlands.

The statue Man with Two Hats stands in Commissioners Park. An explanatory plaque contains the following text:

During the Second World War, Canadian soldiers played a crucial role in the liberation of the Netherlands. With the donation of this monument - an expression of joy and a celebration of freedom - the Netherlands pays lasting tribute to Canada.

A statue identical to this one stands in Apeldoorn in the Netherlands. The twin monuments symbolically link Canada and the Netherlands; though separated by an ocean, the two countries will forever be close friends.

Her Royal Highness Princess Margriet of the Netherlands unveiled the monument in Ottawa on May 11, 2002, and the other in Apeldoorn on May 2, 2000.

L'homme aux deux chapeaux - Man with two hats

The Man with Two Hats || L'homme aux deux chapeaux

In the City of Apeldoorn, The Man With Two Hats monument symbolizes many dualities. The two hats in and of themselves represent a time when to come through the war with one hat was something of a feat. It represents the end of the horrors of war but in the same vein the peace and freedom that continue to elude many countries today. It symbolizes the two countries of Canada and the Netherlands. The outstretched arms symbolize the liberation of the Netherlands and also the reaching out of country to country, people to people. The visage, one of sadness and deep meditation and also one of serenity and peace. With the donation of this monument, the Netherlands pays a lasting tribute to Canada. A statue identical to this one stands in Ottawa, Ontario. The twin monuments symbolically link Canada and the Netherlands, forever close friends.

The monument, which was sculpted by Dutch artist Henk Visch, is made of bronze and measures 4.6 metres. Entitled "The Man with Two Hats" (De man met de twee hoeden), it symbolizes the historic bonds between Canada and the Netherlands.

The aurora borealis over an old turf church. The church dates originally from 1842 and was built near the farm Silfrastaðir in Skagafjörður in northern Iceland. This type of churches was rather common in the countryside in the 19th century. It was rebuilt in Reykjavik in 1960-1961.

One of my favourite pictures, I was on the right spot on the right moment.

The northern lights seem to ascend from the church, with the orange city lights of Reykjavik in the background.

The Arbaer Open Air Museum, or in icelandic: Árbæjarsafn, consists of more than 20 old buildings originating mostly from the centre of Reykjavik. Around the middle of the 20th century interest arose to preserve (to icelandic understandings) old buildings. The centre of Reykjavik around the turn of the 19th century was mainly made up of wooden houses being in a rather different state of maintainance. Also turf houses were still a quite normal sight in Reykjavik. Along with the increasing construction of buildings of more durable material the wooden buildings got into danger to disappear slowly out of the centre of the city. Actually the maintainance of wooden buildings is still a problem in Reykjavik where quite a few house owners do not care about the condition of their old wooden house. In the Arbaer Open Air Museum houses will be found that are of historical and artistic relevance. Through the preservation of the old houses memories will be kept alive with the older days and may prevent that the ties with the past get lost. The Arbaer Open Air Museum was opened in 1957 and gives the icelandic population as well as foreigh visitors a good idea of the architecture and way of life and living conditions in earlier days in Reykjavik.

I like how this light yellow Mercedes-Benz (W123) from decades ago distinguishes itself from the colorless group of modern cars in the background.

To me it seems a bit odd to consider this as an old car even though it is. It might be because these were so commonly recognizable from the time I was a young adult. Its production lasted 11 model years which seems almost like forever, and their durability assured their presence on the roads for many years thereafter.

Notice that there are two Mercedes Benz autos in this photo. In addition to the subject yellow one there’s a white one sitting in traffic, visible between the old Benz and the traffic light pylon. Covering up the front end of the old one, it still looks very much like a Mercedes Benz. Do the same to the white one and suddenly that car becomes a bit more generic and anonymous, not as immediately recognizable as a Mercedes Benz. That’s a priceless quality possessed by the older model and not so much by the newer one.
