When [Deacon] White was nearing the end of his military service, he saw a young soldier by the name of Gordon "Duke" Keats playing baseball in an army camp. White did not think too much of his baseball skills, but his quick judgement of Keats' natural athletic ability proved that White had an eye for talent. In the fall of 1919, White prevailed on Duke Keats to come to Edmonton and join his Eskimo hockey team. Keats agreed and played centre [on] Edmonton hockey teams for seven seasons. He also became a part-owner of Edmonton's entry into the new Western Canada Hockey League in 1920. A measure of the calibre of play in that league was shown when Keats, who later admitted his best playing years were in Edmonton, went on to the NHL to play in Boston, Detroit and Chicago. Keats became a hockey legend and was elected to the the National Hockey League Hall of Fame in 1958.

"I remember very vividly, Duke, the first time I saw you. It was either 1919 or 1920 and the Edmonton hockey club was detraining at the CPR station where a parade had been organized to honour the Eskimo players. I believe you were at the head of the parade, sitting in the side car of a motorcycle ... From 1922 through 1926, I was one of the privileged to enjoy and relish the great hockey entertainment you furnished the people of Edmonton during the Golden Years of the Western Canada Hockey League."

--John Ducey to Duke Keats as quoted in The Rajah of Renfrew

Duke Farms was the vision of James Buchanan Duke, one of the country’s most successful entrepreneurs at the turn of the 20th century. J.B. Duke, who endowed Duke University and founded Duke Power and the American Tobacco Company, began buying land in central New Jersey in 1893 and assembled more than 37 parcels of farmland, which now comprise one of New Jersey’s largest remaining privately owned open spaces.
