Willem Marinus Dudok was first director of Public Works (1915-1928) and then City Architect to Hilversum (1928-1954). In both capacities he set an indelible stamp on the architecture and planning in that city. Obviously this is most legible in the monumental, visually defining city hall which has become almost synonymous with Hilversum. But his many housing projects, schools and other municipal buildings have exerted a more fundamental influence.
Out on a limb stylistically is the City Sports Park of 1919, the first of Dudok's Hilversum works. Here, expressive tiers of wood seating decorated with geometrical patterns and painted in light bright colours sit atop a brick basement. This feature is now part of a business park (Arenapark).

The IJsselmeer [lake of the river IJssel] was created by closing off the Zuiderzee by means of building the Afsluitdijk, a 32 kilometres long closure dam between North-Holland and Friesland, which was completed in 1932.

The 1917 building, located at Leiden, was commissioned by newspaper publisher Leidsch Dagblad and is now in use as a district civil court.

Unlike the former Bijenkorf ('Beehive') designed by Dudok but later demolished in the aftermath of the wartime bombing raid, this post-war version of the department store was executed as an almost completely sealed box. A column grid of 12 metres ensures an optimum subdivision of the sales area. Front and rear elevations have a honeycomb cladding of hexagonal travertine panels with horizontal and vertical fluting and slits of fenestration. The restaurant and offices have larger windows. As Breuer refused to conform to the double building line of Coolsingel, a monumental sculpture by Naum Gabo was placed in front of the Bijenkorf to compensate.

Willem Marinus Dudok, (born July 6, 1884, Amsterdam, Neth.—died April 6, 1974, Hilversum), Dutch architect whose work is related both to the school of Amsterdam, which emphasized individual expression, and to the De Stijl group, which stressed geometric form. He attended the Royal Military Academy at Breda and remained in the army until 1913. He became municipal architect of Hilversum in 1915 and thereafter designed many buildings for the city, notably the Dr. H. Bravink School (1921), the Vondel School (1928–29), and the Town Hall (1928–30). These structures, though compositions of cubes, convey solidity and texture through the use of solid brick.

The orange lines in the morning sun against the blue sky make this a special image of the building made by the architect W.M. Dudok in 1960.
Willem Marinus Dudok (6 July 1884 – 6 April 1974) was a Dutch modernist architect. He was born in Amsterdam. He became City Architect for the town of Hilversum in 1928 where he was best known for the brick Hilversum Town Hall, completed in 1931.Not only did he design the building, but also the interior including the carpets, furniture and even the mayor's meeting hammer. He also designed and built about 75 houses, public buildings and entire neighborhoods.
