I haven't been uploading much lately. It's been very gloomy weather here. So I thought I would have a go at a dramatic black & white self-portrait. In frame also my "new" Sennheiser HD 555 headphones that I got for xmas from my wife. I love 'em!
Strobist info:
One flagged 430EX on each side of me (the subject) for rim light. A 540EZ into a small silver umbrella exactly behind the camera (almost as a ring light). All flashes were triggered with the Elinchrom Skyport System. Metering with Sekonic L-358.

This one had a bit of editing in it. I adjusted the levels of the clouds to bring out more contast and mood. I cropped in a little bit and also had to clone out a few rocks that were half cut off by the crop. All in all, proably 10 minutes of editing.. which is much more than I generally do .. was kinda fun :)
An afternoon of dramatic cloud activity over Phoenix. Lovely and majestic formations which turned dark and stormy. But sky was cloudless by 6pm. It lasted only 3 hours.
Shot these with a Konica Hexanon AR 50mm f/1.7 prime, rev.3.
we got a baby sitter tonight so that we could go out with a bunch of friends for dinner.
we were on the train to brighton beach at a stop and one of our hosts was mugged.
3 guys got on a stop before and walked past us. i saw them check out my friend sitting next to me and something just seemed wrong. total thugs. when the train stopped at the next station 2 of the guys got off and the other ran past us (bumping into our pregnant friend in the process) and grabbed my friend's cell phone right out of his hands and got off the train. the doors shut and it was all over.
sometimes i hate people. i really do.
i hate that it makes me want to stay inside for the rest of my trip. that won't happen, but the d100 will not be riding the subway again.
it is not the phone...it is the reaction from people here. "don't call the police, they won't care." shameful. it could have been a lot worse and that is the point. i am sure that those guys have done a lot worse...tonight...and where is the security for the transit system? i know i am a los angeles resident looking at this from a quick visit, but i am outraged. where does it stop? when is it bad enough that someone does care? i'll tell you when, when it is too f'n late. that's when.
i'll get off my soap box tomorrow and post more photos of gemma sans political outrage. i promise.
Playing around with visual weight extremes can be a fun way to compose a scene. Here we set up a dynamic between a towering granite rock and a little spotlit doe in a meadow in an attempt to create both tension and harmony. We use a large format here to emphasize contrasts.
Original: Marvy and Memento dye based inks applied with Colorbox Stylus Tools (available at www.stampscapes.com). Hero Arts Unicorn white pigment ink. Versafine black pigment ink. 11" x 17" glossy card stock (not glossy photopaper). Shuttle Art and Uniball Signo gel pens.
