A part of the Deurganck dock terminal with the container vessels Meta and Estelle Maersk being worked at.
The 396m (1299ft) long Estelle Maersk is another unscheduled visitor which switched its scheduled call at Rotterdam to Antwerp because of wild strikes at the APM Terminal there. It sails in Maersk's AE10 service and calls on Antwerp, Bremerhaven, Gdansk, Aarhus, Gothenburg, Bremerhaven, Rotterdam, Tanger Med, Suez canal , Singapore, Yantian, Hong Kong, Busan, Kwangyang, Ningbo, Shanghai, Yantian, Tanjung Pelepas, through the Suez Canal and on to Rotterdam.
Maersk vessels usualy call on the PSA Terminal on the other side of the Deurganck dock but I guess there was no more room there with regular customers arriving soon. So this one not only switched from Rotterdam to Antwerp but also from PSA to DP World.
This E-class ship represents the pinacle of classic container ship design where the engine room is situated under the superstructure. One of the problems with this design is that with the length of the vessels increasing, the propellor shaft becomes too long. A solution is too put the bridge and engine room further back but this reduces the capacity as less containers can be stowed on deck to have a clear view from the bridge. That is why, after this, the bridge was put further forward and the engine separate towards the back of the vessel. Containers can be stowed higher behind the bridge and the propellor shaft is still within a 'managable length' to eliminate any vibrations as it spins at about 90 rpm.
In front of it is the 'Meta' which is now sailing for CMA CGM but used to sail as Maersk Perth. This 211m long vessel is certainly a descent size vessel but it is dwarfed by the Maersk giant. It is sailing in the Femex 1 - Aegean Shuttle service in which it calls on Hamburg, Antwerp, Southampton, Tanger Med, Malta, Istanbul (2 terminals) , Gebze, Gemlik, Thessaloniki, Aliaga, Malta, Tanger Med, Casablanca and back to Hamburg
It is not so long ago that 2732 TEU capacity vessels like this one, were the norm on the Europe to Far East trade. How things have changed.
