From sunset yesterday...a picture that Joe had to recover for me...my downloader utility is not behaving! SO frustrating!
A short video of the spider I encountered yesterday...who left the stove on...I'm yet to dabble with the monster that is video editing and so I've only made some simple adjustments on iMovie (colour grading and transitions). The original video was shot in 4k and I downgraded it to 1920x1200 using Macx Video Converter Pro (I can highly recommend it for anyone who's interested in a reasonably priced video converted and downloader for their Macs).
As you can see from the video, this little guy was quick! So quick that getting good focus proved a challenge, as if a one handed macro shot wasn't hard enough already! Nevertheless, it was great fun having this handsome jumper on board. I returned him back home after a few minutes of observation and he went to turn the stove off.
This video was taken with my phone + 10x macro lens.

Picked up my 16-50 pancake zoom from the post office this morning! I was in two minds as to whether I should spend my limited funds on this or the new 35mm 1.8.
As I already have the 50mm f1.8 and Sigma 30mm, as well as a few manual focus legacy lenses which I can use for when Im feeling more creative, I decided to go for this purely due to its size and wide angle zoom range.
I hoping that this will really give my 5n the practicality its tiny body deserves and should be perfect for general snapshots, days out with the kids etc when I dont need a faster prime lens
A few first impressions:
Like all Sony branded E mount lenses its light and built well, the mount and main body of the lens is metal, the focus/ zoom ring is plastic as is the zoom toggle. There is a small amount of wobble with the lens extended.
Its very compact, smaller than it looks in this photo. Its half the size of the 18-55 kit zoom or 50mm f1.8, a little shorter than the Sigma 30mm and 3 or 4mm longer than the 16mm pancake. Fits easily in a jacket pocket, light and compact over the shoulder.
Start up time is surprisingly fast, much better than I expected. The lens extends almost instantly and is ready to go as quickly as the 50mm or 18-55 and almost a quick as the 16mm. Start up is loads faster than the lethargic Sigma 30mm, which is very slow, thats the one thing that really bugs me about the Sigma...
...however when you switch off the camera the it take 3 or 4 seconds before the lens retracts!? Ultimately, its no big deal, its fast on start up and I guess thats what matters.
Handling is quite simply excellent, again better than I expected and better implemented than Panasonics m4/3 power zoom which I dont like at all and gave me a few doubts about buying this lens.
The zoom toggle on the left of the lens can be used at all times and gives a slower, more video friendly action.
When using auto focus, the control ring works as a zoom ring, Sony seems to have judged the sensitivity and movement perfectly, you only need to move it 30 degrees or so to move through the full zoom travel. If you use DMF, the ring works as the zoom ring until you half press the shutter, at which point AF is locked but can then be over ridden by the control ring. If you prefer to manually focus, the ring becomes the focusing ring and you use the toggle to zoom.
AF speed is nice and quick.
The internal zoom motors are a little noisy and could possibly be picked up on video if rapid changes of focal length are used.
The important bit, image quality.
Now just to let you know if you enjoy pixel peeping and measurebating, my opinion might not cut it for you. I rarely view my photos at 1:1 unless Im doing noise reduction or similar and normally view at 1:2 if I take a closer look. I think the 18-55 kit lens is just fine and actually quite like the IQ of the 16mm (as long as you stop it down!). Im not particularly harsh on the IQ performance of my lenses, as long as its pretty sharp, and will look good in print, Im normally happy.
From what I can see, looking at the couple of dozen snap shots that Ive taken today, its without a doubt sharper than the 18-55 kit zoom.
The unprocessed raw files are defiantly more contrasty and colourful when compared to the 18-55 and possibly the Sigma too. Processing them should be a doddle. Generally the lens is sharp, its not as sharp as the Sigma 30mm or the 50mm (but that goes without saying!)
Looking at the raws, at 16mm there is a fair bit of barrel distortion (which isn't entirely unexpected). It looks like it should be pretty easy to correct in LR as its nice and uniform (unlike the 16mm pancake which is all over the place). Im hoping someone with better knowledge than me can come up with a lens profile for Lightroom. From what I can see distortion doesnt seem to be a major problem at longer focal lengths, 35 and 50mm are just fine.

**UPDATE** At wider angles there is a fair amount of vignetting, especially at maximum aperture. Its heavy at the extreme corners at 16mm.
**ANOTHER UPDATE** The nex-6 lens profile is now included with the latest version of adobe camera raw and automatically installs on LR4. If like myself you are using LR3 the profile can be downloaded with the Adobe lens profile downloader and works pretty well in LR3 and with the 5n files.
**Another Update!** Adobe now offers a new profile that isn't nex6 specific, it works great with the 5n files.

At the wide end, sharpness at 16mm is good, although there is some softness at the edges. Center sharpness wide open (f3.5) is nice and gets sharper as you stop down.
At 50mm images are a fairly soft at f5.6, you need to go to f8 to improve things. There is some softness at the edges here too, although not as bad as at 16mm.
The lens seems to perform best at about 30-35mm (ish) where its pleasantly sharp.
Overall, keeping in mind that this is a wide, pancake zoom, the IQ looks fine! Im happy with it.
I'll try and get some sample shots uploaded over the next day or two.

Actually, I pride myself in how tidy and organised I am but my wife believes my music "is a mess". Nowadays, I am a big downloader (legally) of music and have thousands of songs. My CD collection I simply won't let go of, but as I have more than 1,000 CDs guess what, they are all over the house in different little baskets and boxes!!
A touch of soft focus makes this little bundle look nice and tidy, I think!

Today I had some computer work to do as Bridge downloader wasn't finding any of my card readers so I uninstalled Photoshop completely and the reloaded it all. Our #TBT celebrates the opening of Disneyland on this day in 1955. We've provided a portion of the 1965 Anaheim, CA topographic map showing the original footprint of the park still surrounded by orange groves. Notice the Matterhorn ride is shown and labeled on the map because it was noted as a significant man-made structure.
Walt Disney's magical kingdom, built on 160 acres of orange groves and walnut trees with a $17 million investment in the town of Anaheim, was just 30 minutes south of Los Angeles. On this day the press and invited guests entered the park to find an ornate castle, a rustic frontier fort and tropical jungles. Even though the day did not go smoothly with some parts of the park unfinished it has proven to be one of the most popular attractions in the world hosting 14 million visitors a year.

local photoshop user and occasional downloader kelley turgeon (if that is her real name - it might just be something she appropriated) has, for the moment, been awarded the top prize in a toronto smarmpaper's contest. the paper, which pretends to offer up news somewhere amidst platitudes and car ads, decided that ms. turgeon's work effort canvas best represented toronto's emerging artists. this may be true, if one defines an artist as 'that goof who i hired to appropriate for me'.
ms. turgeon testified “we all loved being on the streetcar. it's the funnest thing to do when you're 6", apparently having run her grammar and syntax through the same photoshop filter that she used on the original photograph (patchwork, under the texture header). the star has responded by carefully moderating the comments on the paper's site and shouting bewildering holiday messages at all who investigate.
confused? i'm just taking the piss. the situation is best grasped by reading this discussion in the toronto group. the original photograph, by flickr user Portraits Of Toronto started this ball rolling, and the thread he started there has all the details and links, including one rather damning link to ms. turgeon's non-apology.

Personally I've never bought an iTune and I don't own an iPod. I think Apple's DRM is awful and represents a major step back for us all. I think those that are investing in iTune digital libraries are suckers. You are basically betting that Apple's proprietary DRM laced format will be the standard for the rest of your life. You are paying too much for your music and tying yourself to only Apple products going forward. More innovative ways to play your music may indeed come in the future but unless they are marketed by Apple you will not likely be able to use these devices with your iTunes files due to Apple's tight proprietary control.
Personally I want nothing to do with it. I still collect my digital music the old fashioned way, I rip it straight from CDs to crystal clear high bit rate DRM free mp3s. These files of course can be played on any device and represent better value in my opinion for today's consumer.
What happens when the killer phone is finally here? You know the one, built in terabyte of storage, lightening fast file transfer speeds, full satellite radio, a breathalyzer, your car and house key, a tiny little thing the size of credit card with a 12 mega pixel camera on it (hey it's the future right, we can dream). What happens when this phone is out and you really want it and unfortunately Apple didn't make it? That's right, you're a sucker then aren't you. I thought so. You paid all that good money for your iTunes and now you can't put them on your new phone because your new phone threatens Apple's dominance. So who owns the music anyway? You or them? They do. You bought nothing. You bought the right to play their song on their product. It might work today. But I'm not about to bet that this will be the format du jour 10 years from now.
