You can see the little dinghy Dorothy in the first picture of this series today. But she looked so lovely sitting there in the dark blue water of the Tamar and the warming autumn sun, that I thought a closer look was in order.
Across the road from where I grew up lives our neighbor, Dorothy, who now at 91 is legally blind. She does her best to keep her garden blooming despite this, however. Sadly, she cannot see this beautiful bloom, but I happened to visit on a day when it was at its best.
"I wanted to be a tragedienne. I only wanted sad parts. When mother read the press notices when I was on the road, saying I was a 'comedienne', the tears rolled down my cheeks. I thought comedians had to have black on their faces or red beards." -Dorothy Gish
Dorothy Lake sits at almost 10,000 ft. along the northern boundary of Yosemite National Park (Forsyth Peak in the background). We made an extended stay here after hiking a short section of the Pacific Crest Trail. If you manage to make the trip here, definitely pack your fishing gear. Dorothy and the surrounding creeks hold healthy, wild rainbow trout.
Dorothy: [singing] The wind began to switch / The house, to pitch / And suddenly the hinges started to unhitch / Just then the Witch / To satisfy an itch / Went flying on her broomstick, thumbing for a hitch!

"If we walk far enough, we shall sometime come to someplace."- Judy Garland aka Dorothy, The Wizard of Oz.
Meet Chanel. A seductive model who dressed and played Dorothy (Judy Garland) from the infamous movie, The Wizard of Oz.
Well done Chanel. You did a great job dressing and posing as Dorothy 👏 🔥
If you ever get to the ghost town of Dorothy, Alberta, make sure you climb out of the valley to get a great view of the town and the Red Deer River Valley in general. This vantage point is to the south of the townsite. You really can't miss this road because the bridge is quite visible. I remember thanking my lucky stars for the clouds I got on this day.
A familiar favourite from Aldeburgh, Suffolk UK. This old boat "Dorothy" has seen better days and spends the end of its days looking out to the sea.

I first photographed the beautiful elevator at Dorothy on my first-ever trip to the Prairies in 2013. It was one of my favourites - a beautiful Alberta Pool red elevator standing in the lovely landscape of the Badlands.
Sadly, a storm has recently ripped off most of Dorothy's roof (it doesn't look so bad from this angle, though), so this beauty, built in 1928 and abandoned since the 70s, probably won't be standing for long.
I've written a short blog post about my trip, if you'd like to read it.
If you'd like, take a look at my other Prairies images, as well as my ongoing project to photograph old, abandoned grain elevators. As well, if you're feeling particularly interested, you can read an essay I wrote for Nathan Wirth's Slices of Silence blog on my feelings of connection to the places I shoot, especially the Prairies.
Here's Tugboat "Carolyn Dorothy" cruising along the Columbia River near Sauvie Island.
According to vesselfinder.com she's still in the same area if you want to go take a look...
Dorothy Falls, Lake Kaniere, West Coast, New Zealand
Not far from the town of Hokitika, near the shores of Lake Kaniere are the very picturesque Dorothy Falls. These falls can be seen from the road bridge, but a 2 minute walk down a flat track takes you to the deep coloured pool at the bottom of the falls.
The colour in the water in the pool is caused by the tannins that leach into the water from the rich soil all around.

These precious one year old girls continue to be an absolute joy! I fell in love with them as tiny cubs and watched them grow into gorgeous young leopards, as big as their mom now. As fast as they move and as crazy as they play, it’s a rare treat to catch them during a quiet moment, and rarer still to see them both together, sitting side by side, high above it all on the bough of a tree.

the little boat waits to become a big boat, to join the big boats at the marina - I think it is better to stay a little boat
