This photograph, taken by Dorothea Lange (1895-1965) in late 1940, depicts a migrant from the South and her baby on an Arizona cotton farm. Lange was one of the most important American photographers of the 20th century. After apprenticing in New York City, she moved to San Francisco and in 1919 established her own studio. During the 1920s and early 1930s, she worked as a portrait photographer. In 1932, wanting to see a world different from the society families she had been photographing, she began shooting San Francisco's labor unrest and urban unemployed. In 1935, she accepted a position as a staff photographer with the Federal Resettlement Administration, later renamed the Farm Security Administration. Her new job took her to the South, where she documented small towns, the lives of tenant farmers, and experimental agricultural communities. Returning to the West, she focused on the lives of migrant workers. In 1940, Lange was hired by the Bureau of Agricultural Economics to produce photographs for a series of community studies in California and Arizona.

Camera: Burke & James Rexoette No. 2 (circa 1910).
I bought this old box camera online in August from a camera store in Portland, Oregon. When I recently began to dust it out a bit and clean the glass in preparation for taking pictures with it, I was surprised to find writing on the "cone" inside the camera—the cone is the removable framework which the film winds around so as to record the light coming through the lens. Later box cameras often have metal cones, but the Rexoette's cone is made of wood, and painted flat black. Written on the cone with India ink, in neat, Palmer-Method cursive, is the following: "Miss Dorothea E. Kolstad, Warwick, North Dakota, Rt. 2 Box 18, Christmas 1921." According to the internet, Warwick is a small rural community in northeast North Dakota, founded in 1907, with a population in 2019 of 66. I was able to trace Dorothea a bit on the internet: she was born on April 5, 1905, so she was sixteen years old when she received her Christmas camera. She married, was widowed in 1985, and eventually passed away in Portland in 1997, at 92 years old, apparently still in possession of the Rexoette which she'd received 76 years before.

I picked this book up at an antique shop and was happy to find a couple of portraits of Dorothea Lange tucked into it's pages,

Young family, penniless, hitchhiking on U.S. Highway 99, California. The father, twenty-four, and the mother, seventeen, came from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, early in 1935. Their baby was born in the Imperial Valley, California, where they were working as field laborers.

Another colorized Dorothea Lang black and white image, circa 1935. I tried to keep the colors simple on this as I image that's the way it was in 1935. Best viewed at the largest size.

Lange was one of the best documentary photographers of the 20th century. This is probably her best known photo.
And the Witch of Talysarn.
You wouldn't catch me round these parts in the dark. It's bad enough on a heavily overcast day. To make it worse the rain is coming down hard. I'm pushing my way through the undergrowth and bending to get under low and broken branches, water dripping down on my face. And suddenly I see a large gatepost. It looks so out of place. What is it doing in the middle of dark woodland? And then my eyes pick out more. Walls, the front of a building, window openings, a stylish doorway. Ivy creepers climb up, feeling for any way in, like the tentacles of a deep ocean monster reaching up the face and in through the eyes and mouth of the building. It spooks me. I don't want to hang around here longer than necessary just to get my shot, but then I will keep looking back over my shoulder as I get away. But everything in Dorothea quarry is slowly being strangled and pulled into the undergrowth. Things are disappearing without a sound. I didn't want to be one of them!

This sunflower is one of the 198,000 seeds (25 lb.) planted by the city of Raleigh, NC in the five acre field that serves as a pollinator habitat. After the blooms have faded and the seeds ripened, they will be harvested and turned into biodiesel fuel for the tractors and mowers in the parks department,
