Kirby & West built milk float, WRY341 is still in daily use some 50 years after it first went into service for the concern. It's superb condition is typical of the high standards demanded and operated by this 140-year old company.

These Unigate Morrison D1 milk floats were once such a common sight throughout the West Midlands, it hard to believe that they have all long since gone. The picture shows Unigate 865 standing outside the entrance to Kingstanding dairy with the Kingstanding Road behind.

This vehicle was based at the Co-op Glendale Gardens depot, Leigh-On-Sea, Essex.
A 'green' delivery system. Ironic that with electric cars starting to appear on our roads that electric milk floats are having to be replaced by diesel powered vehicles to cover the greater distances with fewer doorstep deliveries now.

Seen on the side of a 1974 Milk Float
The company was formed in 1959 by the merger of the UK's largest dairy products company United Dairies, with Cow & Gate, earlier known as the West Surrey Central Dairy Company, forming Unigate. On merger, aside from its extensive milk home delivery network, its range of food products included Cow & Gate baby foods and Farmers Wife cream. It also developed St Ivel cheese spreads and Utterly Butterly. In 1963, Unigate acquired Midland Counties Dairies, but as milk consumption levelled and then started to decline in the 1960s, it began diversifying into non-dairy businesses.But the diversification did not help the balance sheet, and in the late 1980s the project was reversed. By the end of the decade, despite Unigate remaining the UK's biggest milk supplier, dairy products only made up one third of group turnover.
But by the late 1990s, the decline in doorstep deliveries and price pressure from supermarkets led to mounting losses, and in 2000 the milk and cheese division was sold to Dairy Crest. On completion of the sale, the company changed its name to Uniq in July 2000

The FARMER'S WIFE trademark was a brand name belonging to Unigate Dairies, and was used on the companies Butter, cream, milk and milk products. , Milk products for infants' and invalids' use, or for dieretic purposes. Normally sold direct from the Milkmans float, along with the morning Pinta.

G183YJF is one of the three-wheel variants that Kirby and West built for negotiating narrow streets, where the floats are expected to turn around in tight spaces. The increase in car ownership and on-road parking only add to that problem. The three-wheel floats are aptly suited to this work, as they can turn within own length, but lack the stability of their four-wheel counterparts.
This was an idea in outline that didn't really workout, probably because it was done off the cuff with little or no planning. Anyway, here's the initial outline in pencil.
