In the classic children’s tale, The little red hen finds some wheat seeds and decides to grow them and make bread. At each step, planting through baking, she asks the farmyard animals for help, and they all refuse. When the bread is finally made, those same animals come asking to share, but the hen refuses to so and is proud of herself for doing all the work.

Did you know the hard-to-melt tropical bar’ of chocolate issued in WWII were deliberately made to be high in nourishment, but have little taste so troops would be more likely to keep them for emergencies? The mix of foods in it - Chocolate liquor, skim milk powder, cocoa butter, powdered sugar, vanillin, Vitamin B-1, oat flour. My father loved those bars! He was a faithful Hershey fan for the rest of his life because he so appreciated the candy bars he had while on Iwo Jima.

I’m doing a series of four 14 x 18 paintings for a Hahnemuehle trade show, which is part of the reason I haven’t been posting often of late. I’m almost done, but working on the reviews that are the other reason for not posting often. I hope to be back to my daily postings soon. Or at least posting more often.

Did you know hyenas are not canines, but part of their own family, Hyaenidae, which is more closely related to cats, mongooses, and civets? No wonder they laugh (although only the spotted ones do).

I used a colored pencil resist in this one.

Did you know, although there are no white hummingbird species, any of them can have albino, leucistic, or pied coloration? In case you weren’t aware: Albino-white with pink skin, and lightly colored eyes that appear pink or red according to the light; leucistic - white but skin and eyes are the usual color; pied-mostly white, but some spots have the usual color, and the eyes and skin have the usual color.
