A boy that I became friends with at the beginning of this semester, Isaac Eslava, chose to cut down the three flags from the flagpole on the Parade Grounds and burn the American one the morning after it was revealed that Osama Bin Ladin was captured and killed. Isaac and I are not best friends by any means, but I do know his political views pretty well (I used to get into arguments with him about them all the time because we highly disagreed), and he did this in protest (obviously). The school didn't take kindly to it, again, obviously, seeing as it was not only a little under $8,000 in damages (he graffitied as well), but disrespectful. A warrant was issued for his arrest, and he eventually turned himself in.
Well, today there was supposed to be a rally to free Isaac, whom is currently in prison (yet still posting things on his Facebook?), but things didn't go according to plan. They were going to burn another flag - somehow permission from the school was obtained - but they didn't get permission from the fire department, which you need, apparently...
My take on the whole thing is: I'm on no one's side. Yes, Isaac was my friend, and I still think he's a generally nice guy, albeit extremely radical, but what he did was wrong and poorly planned. If he really wanted to protest and express his views, he could have just bought his own flag. I guess the romance of a fallen hero overtakes all revolutionaries at some point. But anyway, I do think he needs to be punished for it.
BUT THEN AGAIN, the people that are running around talking about how Isaac needs to be deported back to Columbia (where he's originally from) and the bastards that are saying ridiculous things on the internet, including that he needs to be killed (!!!!!!!!!!!!), are complete fucking imbeciles. You can't run around yelling about patriotism and how awesome it is that we finally killed Osama, and then say we need to do almost the exact same thing that made us come to hate Osama so much. That's not how it works, bub.
The beauty of living in America is that we have the right to burn the flag if we want; we have the right to stand up against our government if we believe it's doing something wrong, as Isaac did.
I really just wish people would think for at least two minutes before they acted.
