This is near the hiding spot of my parents place in Vermont. These trees are literally hanging onto the rocks. Their roots run up to solid soil. Their trunks are pointing upwards, verifying the definition of apical dominance. Plants, like humans, are polar organisms. The top wants to grow towards the sun. The trunks are all bent to structurally support its own weight.
